Why use a spine with SWB History of the Ancient World?

Do you really need a spine with Susan Wise Bauer’s History of the Ancient World? Why or why not?

It certainly can stand alone.

 

We used Speielvogel to finish out the year because HMW wasn't completed at that time.

 

 

Ds is finishing HMW this summer. He REALLY enjoys SWB's books

I thought HAW would be considered the spine and you would then just add literature books, I don't know that you would need another spine along with it, unless maybe you want to use any encyclopedia just have two different sources of information.

Spielvogel is very thorough, but there is just so much information in it; it's really overwhelming. HAW, being more narrative, is much more interesting and the flow of it is natural. We used that with Teaching Co.'s Foundations of Western Civilization lectures (first half) and a few short papers, along with the Spring Term Paper, and called it a year.

My son is using this AS his spine this year. We have added a few books along with it, but the SWB is the core history book.

 

We started school Monday, and this book is his favorite of the history books.
