Nestof3
My book says 3 months is the max. storage freezer time for ground beef. What are the reasons for this -- bacteria or "freezer burn" taste? Have you stored yours longer? I'd hate to throw this much away.
Amira
Mine is usually in there longer than 3 months. We haven't gotten sick nor noticed any unusual flavor.
AndyJoy
I'm sure it's just because of freezer burn. My family always ate ground beef that had been frozen longer than that and never gave it a second thought. It's so expensive here than whenever it is $2 or less a pound I stock up! Jane in NC
What are the reasons for this -- bacteria or "freezer burn" taste? I had been under the impression that freezer burn is caused by air in the packaging, which is why I often use freezer paper as well as a ziploc when dividing up something like a quantity of chicken breasts. Your query led me to the Library of Congress: http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/freezerburn.html Note that freezer burn affects taste but does not contaminate the food. Denise in IN
Bacteria is not going to be an issue with frozen food. The only reason for a max. storage time would be food quality, i.e. freezer burn. I have ground beef (and other meat) in the freezer much longer than three months. As long as its packaged correctly so that air isn't getting to it, it should be fine.
