Momof1plustwins
There have only been a couple of occasions where I have used mine. For the most part, I don't even open it. One thing I remember in particular that it helped me with is teaching how to borrow in a subtraction problem. I was unsure how to approach it, but the manual helped me ease my son into it. If you have a pretty good idea on how you might explain new concepts such as this, then no you wouldn't need it. hth, Robin
plain jane
No, I don't think you need it. It's not very helpful for instruction, *but* it can be very helpful to help you mark faster. Obviously you can do grade 2 math well enough to figure out the answers, but it can be time consuming. :tongue_smilie: If you can pick one up used for a good price, I vote get it just for the ease of marking. MerryAtHope
I did without a TM until Horizons 4--that's about when it becomes faster for me to get up and go get the TM in order to check my kids' work, than it is for me to figure all of the problems myself, LOL! rdromick
I've used the guides for 1 and 2. I like them because they have additional recommendations for each lesson worksheet, not just teaching tips. For instance, today in addition to the sheet, they asked dd to count by 3's to 36. I find their recommendations help prepare for future skill. They also make recommendations for flashcard usage and drills.
Beth in SW WA
Jean, I have the TM's for both Horizons 1 & 2. I need extra hand-holding so I'm glad I have them. Although, I am not impressed. They are not scripted like Saxon, which is what I'm familiar with. I do love the colorful Horizons workbooks, though.
Orthodox6
I vote "yes." The Horizons TE does not help me to teach. I know K-6 math without aid. The TE includes, however, the rest of the lesson. Each day's lesson covers more than what is in the worktext. There are additional tasks for the student to practice, such as skip counting, specific computation facts, etc. These are necessary skills for a K-6 student to acquire.
