mlktwins
Hi all! I'm going to start the WTM way of science for 1st grade with my K's next school year (just the animal part). We checked out the DK First Animal Encyclopedia from the library and the boys LOVED looking through the book. I plan to supplement with other materials as well. I'm trying to find a good resource to teach habitats (again for young K's). Any recommendations? I though the DK First Nature Encyclopedia http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0756614155/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0756602270&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0AG80113G9TKKMCR6V89 might look good for that. Thanks much! Mendy

hopeallgoeswell
I second the One Small Square series! ;) :iagree: DD is doing WP Animals and Their Worlds with the OSS and she LOVES them. She reads a section to me (usually about 2 pages, sometimes 4) per day, 4 times a week and the 5th day we read from the DK Encyclopedia of Animals. Both are very visually appealing and can be condensed if needed.
Corraleno
Another vote for One Small Square! My DD absolutely loved these, and they're really packed with information, they're not "babyish" at all. Jackie

Thanks much! Mendy I do like the One Small Square books but my absolute favorite resource for teaching animal habitats is Wildlife Atlas: A Complete Guide to Animals and Their Habitats. This book is a treasure, as it goes through each biome one by one (tropical grasslands, tropical rainforests, deserts, temperate woodlands, temperate grasslands, taiga and tundra, wetlands, and mountains and polar regions). For each type of climate, there is a world map that shows where in the world these biomes can be found. Then there are spreads devoted to the different animals in each of the different locations from around the world. I wish you could see inside. At any rate, I highly recommend this book. It's a favorite here.
TXMary2
We also love the One Small Square series - the books are excellent.
jclinton
Any of the One Small Square books would be good. You also might look at the books in Winter Promise's Animal World curricula - there might be some good books in there. JoAnne
Storm Bay
There's a book at Rainbow Resource Center with that name that has crafts to do for each section you might find fun and helpful.
SilverMoon
Some good read aloud chapter books are written by Thornton Bugress. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thornton_Burgess :iagree: We love the Thornton Burgess animal books. You can read some of them online at http://www.mainlesson.com for free. They make great read alouds for that age, and when his reading gets to about a second grade level he can take over reading some of them himself.
