This is a really good question now you have me wondering lol

hehe. My husband is an artist and both my kids take after him--they love art, studying artists, learning new 'techniques' etc. I just want to make my life a little simpler, and I thought 'hmmm, I wonder if anyone has thought of designing simple art kits for young hs-ers...."

You know what? I bought most of my kids Abeka art books this year. Art is something I'm too spasmodic with, and I really want them to have something they can get going with; something that doesn't rely on me to have supplies organised etc.

The elementary books are mostly self-contained with lots of little crafty things ready to be cut out and used. They also contain some different techniques and strategies. Some of the crafts have a theme base to match seasons and holidays (like Valentine's Day).

Check them out:

Book K https://www.abeka.com/ABekaOnline/BookDescription.aspx?sbn=26409

Book 1 https://www.abeka.com/ABekaOnline/BookDescription.aspx?sbn=60534

Also, http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/ has tons of great craft ideas. Ds 5 and I are making a fire engine out of an old box, and idea gained from this site.

At this age exploration is very important. My dd5 LOVES art and we have been using Primary Art.

http://www.amazon.com/Primary-Art-Its-Process-Product/dp/0876592833

It has a lot of activities using various mediums. Our local library has this title and others by the author.

I also have How To Teach Art To Children, which I used with my older dd and will proably pull off the shelf for first grade.:)

http://www.amazon.com/How-Teach-Art-Children-Grades/dp/1557998116

I hope this helps.:)

this is actually ALMOST what I am looking for. I just don't need the non-crafty stuff that they seem to include in the kits. Thank you!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! Wish I would have known about it when I had a preschooler. Does anyone know if there is something like this for K or 1st?

Oooh I like those books from abeka!! all self contained, and cheap too! Thank you! And I know of enchantedlearning, but I think if I had something actually in front of me, I'd be more likely to do it.

I order Chubbie Cubbies for my littlest dd for this month. It is only $16.95 per month and has crafts, fingerplays, stories, songs, and other themed activities. It is suited to ages 2-5. There is other ones out there but this was the best price.

off to google!

Is this a book?

okay I just found the site. HOW did I not know about this??? This looks great--not a kit, but so straightforward and well-done. We are doing k12 art now, but I am not sure we'll continue due to cost. If I prepare in advance this book could really work. Thank you!

Do you think the 3rd grade curriculum would work for a 1st grader, or do you think it's better to do them separately?

I have Artistic Pursuits and, while it's not exactly what you're talking about, it is almost. I love artistic pursuits. I ordered it from RR and you can order all the art supplies needed along with the book. It's the closest thing I've ever seen to "open and go" for art, but that is reallyart. And I love that it both teaches a little about Masters art, but also lets them try different media.

Oh, and I combine my 4th grader and my 5 year old. My 5yo likes art a lot and has a lot of aptitude. They combine fine.

I really think I am going to for this next year. And you say RR has all the equipment too? Awesome! We have lots of crafts, but I'd pay for an organized set :)

So if I have a VERY arty 4 (almost 5 year old) who knows by sight the works by major artists (Manet, Monet, Picasso, de Hooch, Goya etc) and a 7 yo boy who loves creating art but isn't quite so good on the theory or history, which book would you recommend? My 7 yo will have completed K12.com's Art K, 1st grade and 2nd grade, which has lots of Masters, history, technique etc.

Could I go with Book 2 for both of them? Thanks!!!
