Teaching the States...

My kids have a couple of games--Scrambled States of America is one of them. Another idea is just a map puzzle. To learn the state names I taught them the Fifty Nifty United States song. For the capitals there is an Animaniacs song that teaches this; my husband found it on YouTube.

We love Scrambled States of America (we have the book and game). There is also another great book called Yo! Sacramento which teaches states and capitals.

If you ever study presidents you have to get the book Yo! Millard Fillmore.

Good luck.

My 6-year-old learned all the capitals and states by listening to the US Capitals Songs CD from Larry and Kathy Troxel - Audio Memory Publishing.

Very easy, loved it.

Mine used music, too. I'm not sure if it's the same as this or not, but my 14 yo still knows that song, as well as the one on US Presidents we have. So does my 11 yo.
