gwendolyn
I am looking for a secular history for my K'er. My husband and I are history buffs and want to pass that on to our kids. I am having a hard time finding a secular history and even more difficulty finding a timeline. Any advice?
coffeefreak
Which time period are you looking for? Are you looking for a general overview or a specific time in history? Let us know and we'll be better able to help you :001_smile:. Blessings! Dorinda
gwendolyn
I want to start with pre-historic and go through the ancients. I am flexible. I mainly want it to be chronological. I may not be saying this right. I'm a bit new to the terminology.
LadyAberlin
This is the only one that I know of that is secular and has pre history. http://bringinguplearners.com/mosaic/ There is also Sonlight core 1 that I'm using with my kinder. it uses A Child's History of the world and that has some pre history. There is a secular sonlight yahoo group that can help you secularize Sonlight. It isn't that difficult to do. There is also http://www.pandiapress.com It has an ancients program. Aurelia
I wanted some pre-history, so we did Connect the Thoughts First Step Starter pre-history and moved into Story of the World: Ancient Times. CTT's program was okay. It covered the material I wanted to, but I wasn't thrilled with it, it was kind of simplistic and slow for my child, but YMMV. Lovedtodeath
When are you needing to start it? littlecitykids.com has a K history lesson plan, it goes through all of it quickly.
coffeefreak
Have you thought about Usborne's Book of World History? Sonlight uses it and it's secular. It is full of pictures, and you would be able to read straight through it. I think for Kindergarten that's your best bet. Find a book with loads of pictures, read through it and maybe do narration or a couple of hands on projects (making a mummy for example). Usborne has a TON of books. Google the name and you'll come up with websites that sell them. Another one we really liked is the Time Traveler book.. My girls still like that book. If you decide Usborne is not what you're looking for, we also like the DK Eyewitness books you find at Barnes and Nobles or Borders. My oldest LOVES that the pictures are of real things, and not just drawings. We used one for the middle ages with the Usborne Time Travelers and it was a great combo. HTH! Welcome to the Boards! CamperMom
You might take a look at the Michael Olaf Montessori company for some books and a timeline. Also, the Usborne Internet Linked World History Encyclopedia has a pre-history section which could be used as a spine.

Lovedtodeath
FYI: Usborne's Book of World History starts with a 2 page spread on Archaeology and then has the first settlers. There is no other pre-history. The Usborne Internet Linked Encyclopedia starts with the Big Bang (if not before) and has 1/4 of the book devoted to pre-history. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WellTrainedMindSecular/ we had a lot of talk about pre-history in this group. Their are files there too. Ancient Explorations is a secular program designed for K-2nd, but there is only one week (three days) on pre-history. Then it starts in on SOTW, which has one week on archaeology and history and one week on the first settlers in the Fertile Crescent.
kiana
I found this list on amazon -- the contents look secular and evolutionary to me. :D http://www.amazon.com/Kindergarten-Prehistory/lm/R3H428HDAPHRET (if it doesn't come through, I found it by searching for kindergarten prehistory)
Lovedtodeath
You might start a separate thread about a pre-history timeline. I am sure plenty of people will have suggestions if they read that in the title.
Lovedtodeath
This is the only one that I know of that is secular and has pre history. http://bringinguplearners.com/mosaic/ :iagree:I remember looking at this one. It might have a lot of what you are looking for. I know there is a timeline activity. I am not sure if there is an actual timeline supplied or suggested. I would check it out. There is also a yahoo group for this curriculum and I do remember a lot of additional pre-history suggestions in the files.
kalanamak
I did pre-history in K. There are many wonderful books out there. Usborne has a life through the ages one with scenes from history that you talk point and talk about for hours. How Children Lived is another. I'll try to remember to check who puts out that ascending timeline, once my sleeper is out of that room. Calvert?? For K, I wouldn't go nutzo. I'd do read alouds and a few hands on. I also looked at early art with him and did some museums.
