hmschooling
...are there any musical cd's for this? Something fun for an 8yo that she can do independently to practice them without boring drill?
CourtneySue
The Shurley Grammar jingles CD might have what you're looking for. I know they cover other topics, like linking verbs, but I can't remember if it had prepositions. I'm sure someone on here that has used it would know. It was used at a school I worked at years ago, and I can't remember . . . .

LOL... when I read the thread title my mind started saying "A prep-prep-preposition is a special group of words..." and I haven't heard those jingles since 1997 when I was teaching ps. :) Yes, it has the preposition jingle. (I think I need to get that CD for my kids - they would love it! :))

I didn't see a listing of what is actually on the CD track by track...is that available somewhere?

(I think I need to get that CD for my kids - they would love it! :)) Actually, that's the jingle that teaches what a preposition is; whereas, the jingle that teaches the prepositions goes like this. . . Preposition, preposition starting with an 'A' aboard, about, above across, after, against, along, among, around, at Preposition preposition starting with a 'B'. . . My youngest son loved learning this jingle! We would say it while tossing a soft ball back and forth. I used the timing of the toss to either speed up the jingle or slow it down. He quickly learned 49 prepositions this way. :001_smile: We loved Shurley Grammar!
hmschooling
Do both of these cd's teach all the prepositions or does one teach more than the other? Which Shurley level would have this?
8filltheheart
One caution on using songs to teach prepositions is that it can lead to confusion in children. There are many words that are "listed" as prepositions that may not be used as a preposition in a sentence and may actually be an adverb or another part of speech. For example: The dog got out. Out is an adverb. The boy ran out the door. Out is a prep. Or the word like.......it can be a verb or a prep (among others). I like cake. Like is a verb. He eats like a pig. Like is a prep. mom2abcd
I don't know of any, but when I was in Junior High I had a teacher who listed them in ABC order and we sang them to the tune of Jingle Bells. To this day I have not forgotten that song! OK. Please share!

hmschooling
Thanks! I couldn't access the first one at all, and the second one didn't take me to anything to do with the jingles, just an opening page to her page...I searched her page for jingles, but it didn't come up. But the last two have all the lyrics and I could see those! Now, I just need the tune :o) You can get some of the Shurley jingles stuff online: Podcast of jingles http://wt2.cherokee.k12.ga.us/kim.carr/shurley_jingles.htm http://www.pagesofourlife.com/search?q=Classical+conversations http://w4.nkcsd.k12.mo.us/~cbliss/Shurley%20Jingles.htm http://www.ccs.k12.in.us/esc/c&i/Language_Arts/Shurley/Jingles.htm I'd love to see if someone could use this successfully without using the whole program. Mom2GirlsTX
My children learned using the FLL audio CD. My kids truly loved that CD, it is well worth the price. You could use Easy Grammar, it starts off with children learning the concept of prepositions and every year introduces a few more. http://www.easygrammar.com
