Has any one used Joy Hakim's science?

I saw that she has a science series, but then found out that there are also student guides and a TM to go along with the books.

Has any one used the Aristotle Leads the Way book, Student Guide, and TM? If so, what are your thoughts for a science curriculum for 7th grade?

... and taken a closer look at one or two of the books. They look excellent, but very, very dense. I think it would be too advanced for my 6th grader, and he can handle fairly advanced material. Your child may be different though.

BTW, we did use Hakim's History of US, and it worked beautifully. We tend to be more history specialists than science specialists, however.

My dd is 11. We have the first in this series and she enjoys reading it, and gets much out of it. I'm not sure if you could use it as a stand alone curriculum or not. We also have Apologia (I find it dry) and A Beka....and some Prentice Hall...we do a little bit of everything! But I do like Hakim's treatment of Science History in this series.

I've heard (from this forum, I believe) that the actual student guides and TM are a bit redundant and you could study the books w/out those, actually.

Did you look at the samples available for the guides? If not, you can do so here:

http://www.joyhakim.com/aristotle.html This is the only one for which a sample of the guides is available.

I can't determine whether the teacher/student guides are available yet for the third volume (Einstein).

The guides are designed for a standard, public/private school classroom with blackboard, overhead projector, numerous students for group projects, etc. I don't think that I would spend that much money for something which probably would be difficult to adapt for homeschool use.

I also wonder whether Mrs. Hakim has abandoned her plan for a six-volume series (three volumes for the life sciences), since nothing seems discussed anywhere that I can locate.

At any rate, I think these history of science books are better for grades 8-9. Even for some more relaxed high school students (?).

* * * [NOTE] : I would have to dig for the pertinent reviews, but Mrs. Hakim has been faulted for some of her science "facts." Would be a good idea to follow up on that investigation. It has been quite a while since I read those reviews.

The books do not suit as a curriculum for science, but as a curriculum for the history of science. I majored in the history of science for my undergraduate degree, so was tremendously excited when these books appeared on the market !

Instead of these books for your son's science course, you might consider "The Rainbow" science curriculum, which is designed for grades 7-8. My own thought is that it is much better than Apologia's offerings.

Thank you for the comments. I really appreciate them. I was leaning toward not needing the Student book & TM, but wasn't sure. Glad to hear that it is geared toward classroom vs. homeschool.

Orthodox6, Thank you so much! I was looking for samples and couldn't find any. That is extremely helpful.

I had the Apologia General Science and just sold it this weekend. I've heard a lot of comments and how great it is, however it is just not going to work for us. Thank you for suggesting it though.

We have Rainbow and ds likes it a lot.... I just don't like the TM at all. Maybe I should get over it and use it anyway since he likes the text so much.

We have the first book from the library, and dh is reading it to B & T as part of their bedtime reading. The bits I've heard seem to be history-of-science rather than science concepts/experiments (although those are mentioned as part of the story.) They seem to be enjoying it, especially dh. :)
