  1. How much time do you spend doing notgrass. I'm looking at doing the world history and reading his recommended reading list. Cindy
  2. I have a tenth grade daughter next year. I have notgrass world history, writing strands 6 and abeka grammar/composition IV. Is this too much writing for her to do? Should I eliminate writing strands 6 or the composition part of abeka? I'm kind of confused. She is not a great writer.....not bad just not great. Thanks for yall's help! Cindy
  3. I know this has been asked before I just couldn't find it. How do yall schedule the algebra 2 book. I mean long for a lesson, how long for chapter review then of course 1 day for chapter test. See, I like things spelled out for me!!!!! Cindy
  4. Has anyone used Story of the World I and activity book for a 5th grader? Is it too young? What do you think? Cindy
  5. Thank you, Jann. You are always so willing to come to our aid. I think that's a great idea. She usually does well on proofs but some reason had a mental block. That was the only thing she missed on the whole test...
  6. Thanks, Jann! You are always so helpful. I actually tutor geometry and so yes, as long as it's a good proof she gets credit whether it is the way Jacob's did it or not. I can determine if its a valid proof. This is just the first time she got completely stumped and only could write the "givens" down. There were about 17 other problems on the test and then these 2 proofs....so when I counted them as 5 points apeice it blew her "A" average!!!!big time!! I did give her 1 point for knowing to put the givens. I just wasn't sure I was grading it fairly. I do love math and am a liscenced engineer so I'm good at math but I'm just not always sure how many points each problem should be worth which of course I guess you could get 100 different answers. Thank you for your help!
  7. How much do yall count the proofs on the geometry tests. For example on my daughter's last test there were 2 proofs and I counted them 5 points apeice. Well, she usually does well but this time she blacked out and missed both of them so I had counted all other questions one point which made total of 30 points on the test. So, you can do the math she made 77. Do you think this is reasonable. Just like yall's opinion.
  8. What I find is in some of the application...for example, in glencoe after they teach sin and cos they have word problems that you have to set up the angle of elevation or deflection and determine what you are looking for. In the Jacobs book they have the picture drawn for you after a word problem so you know exactly what the "x" is.....the horizontal or the hypotenuse, etc. and where the angle goes. Another example is glencoe covers law of sin and cos and I don't see that in Jacob's. It seemed the glencoe chapter on bisectors, altitudes, medians, etc. had more complicated problems. Now, I glanced at my nephew's(he's public schooled) glencoe precalculus and I thought the same thing as you. It seemed much more algebra and simple trig. What do you like for precalculus? I'm glad to know Jacob's will be thorough enough because I will say my daughter understands the concepts much more than my tutor students who use glencoe.
  9. Our state requires a computer application credit. I'm not sure what there is out there. My daughter does use internet and an old wordperfect program but that is about the extent. Can yall help? This is the description from our requirements website in MS for computer app. Computer Applications: ½ Carnegie Unit - Course should emphasize the computer as a productivity tool. Instruction should include the use of application packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets. The course should also include basic computer terminology and hardware operation.
  10. My daughter is using Jacob's geometry. I tutor geometry to some private school students that use Glencoe. It is much harder than the Jacob's. I haven't looked at an ACT test. Does Jacob's prepare you for the ACT test well enough. Thanks! Cindy
  11. I did find a school called Montgomery Christian Institute that was giving the Nance Logic as an elective and each one counted as 1/2 credit. Introduction to Logic was 1/2 and Intermediate to Logic was 1/2 credit. Sounds good to me!
  12. We did into to logic last year and are finishing with intermediate logic this year. They are Nance's programs. Can they count for a high school elective. THanks Cindy
  13. Where have you purchased the LIAL books and the geometry book you've used. We used abeka for algebra 1 and are using Jacob's geometry this year. My daughter is doing fine but I have not been thrilled with Jacobs. Let's just say it's a good thing I understand math and have taught it before. I've liked some of the books my math tutor students have used but I've always found them cost prohibitive if you wanted to get the teacher's book and tests, etc. Can you help? Cindy Lee
  14. My husband has okayed us getting a microscope. My daughter is probably college bound and our state does require 2 lab based sciences. We are already doing apologia biology and realized this. Is the microscope necessary to count as lab based? I don't want to find out I did a course and it didn't count. Thank you!
  15. I use apologia biology. I'm trying to save some money on purchasing a microscope. I found these mentioned on the board. Has anyone used either of these with some success? Thanks! http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=104720 http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=104721
  16. Anyone use this and what do you think. I've used Veritas Press and Sonlight. I have a highschooler and looking for something for world history next year. Cindy
  17. Has anyone ever used this or do you have another suggestion? Can't afford Rosetta. Thanks
  18. Are you talking about plan for writing the high school years or the writing without fear? I wanted to download it and was just making sure. I have a 9th grader. Cindy
  19. Jenn, I have a 9th grade daughter. To learn persuasive essays would you recommend The Lively Art of Writing?
