  1. Me too. I have 4 boys. My mom mentioned having a yard sale recently to 1) declutter and 2) raise money for curriculum I just laughed. Everything is broken! What is there left to sell:lol:
  2. Looking for something like Sonlight Core C (history + lit) though it could be geography or even science based. I have most of the other stuff figured out.. My default for next year is Sonlight Core C + Readers 4/5. I'm not overjoyed with that decision. I feel like there is something that is a better fit for my son... He will be 4th grade next year Average reader Extremely good at problem solving (does adult level Sudoku problems with ease) LOVES Science Very detail oriented We are secular homeschoolers but I don't mind if it is Christian-based (obviously, I use Sonlight) as long as it is easy to secularize. I keep thinking that a Science based year would be great. Or maybe something .... gosh.... I don't know! I love sonlight P 4/5 and then Core D+. I'm ok with Cores A-C but they aren't my favorites. I feel like there is a program out there that he would love but I can't for the life of me figure out what it would be... Can you help?
  3. 5 kids that are school age - each in their own Sonlight core ;)
  4. Pyloric Stenosis - my brother had it. Hold on, let me find a link. Here you go: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001965/
  5. FWIW, AoPS Prealgebra does a lot with the distributive and commutative properties. Pretty sure they go into detail about the why behind the order of operations. I know the prove the properties. But the proof takes more manipulation of numbers than I think most kids are ready for in 3rd grade...
  6. I read ahead and was annoyed by the five dot answer that asked for four dots. You aren't the only one. That said, my son said it didn't even feel like school because it was too much fun. His brother came over to take a look and quickly said, "No way, math is NOT my passion." ;) He is not a mathy kid at all. BA would have been (is) too much for him.
  7. Most but not all the instruction is in the guide book. The deeper understanding is mostly in the practice book. For example: They reviewed the ways to name a triangle in the practice book, not in the guide book. In the guide book, they covered the different types of triangles, classification by angle and by side but imo the real understanding comes when trying to do the problems.... which are in the practice book. You need both imo.
  8. I had the same thought ;) My kiddo that is working through the Prealgebra book is currently on strike. She wants beasts and tons of humor  I do hope that 5D helps make the transition to Prealgebra not so shocking. Huge difference between the colorful, comic texts and the black and white textbook (with a splash of purple), yk? Grey did his first lesson today and fell in love. He was happy as a clam doing the angle mazes. :D
  9. I use Sonlight quite a bit and I do secularize it. :tongue_smilie: What is IB? Wait, is it this: http://www.ibo.org/ ?
  10. I can't be the only one that daydreams about a curriculum that doesn't exist. Here is what I would love to see: 1. Secular (see #6) 2. Anthropology base (Sonlight - history base, Geomatters - geography base) 3. Critical Thinking / Philosophy - you are studying artifacts, people and their cultures.... that is just fertile ground for epistemology... 4. The LA would tie in the linguistics of anthropology 5. The geography would tie directly to the culture. ex) see how these mountains force the people to be self-sufficient... 6. World Religion focus - as this is closely ties to culture. High school would read large portions of many sacred texts 8. Emphasis on community service. "what can you do to make a difference" 9. Literature based There is more to it but I'll stop for now. Tell me what you would LOVE to see. :D
  11. Can you share with me how you are using WWtW? Perhaps if I use a different methodology, I would be more satisfied. I found some samples of the Sadlier-Oxford books last night. Let me see if I can find them again. Here you go: http://www.sadlier-oxford.com/catalog/category.cfm?category_id=10880&qpath=1705#details I took a look at quite a few vocabulary samples last night. These words do appear to be quite challenging. So, as long as they stick, you should be good.
  12. I was just looking at this but I don't have any personal experience with it. It is online: http://www.wordsandtheirstories.com/
  13. Thank you for the recommendation. We are secular homeschoolers so I was happy to see your side note stating that the books are secular. :001_smile:
  14. Caesar's English makes me swoon ;) I love the way it quotes the classics and love the stories with the rich vocabulary. Love the ties to Latin and history. Just love. Word with in a Word feels clinical in comparison. Like the poster above me said it is a lot of material but the killer for us is that it lacks all the "coziness" of CE I & II. I suppose that sounds a little weird to want my vocabulary book to be cozy. :o CE highlighted the beauty of the words and we have spent many hours in awe. Sadly, I don't get that with Word within A Word. To clarify, I don't think Word within a Word is a bad program. In fact it is very meaty. I'm just not ready for the jump. I feel a little lost after all the great discussions on the couch curled up with CE. What do I do with all the lists and stems that will give me the same deep appreciation for our language? I keep trying but despite my efforts, we find Word with a Word to be less than engaging and remembering the stems is much, much more difficult. Memorizing the words and stems in CE was effortless because we were so impressed with the words through their examples. Of course, I don't need effortless. And I do expect the work to get considerably more difficult as the years progress. I just did not expect the two programs to feel so dissimilar to each other. Darn, I need a Caesar's English series for 3-12 :tongue_smilie:
  15. We love Caesar's English. We are not thrilled with the Word within a Word series. Are there any other fantastic vocabulary books with a similar format to CE I & II?
  16. I'm in NC and shipping was free on my Galore Park books. They shipped them separately which I believe is fairly standard. I received one in about 10 days. I waited 3 weeks for the other. When it didn't show, I contacted them and they were extremely helpful. Sent another book right out. I did receive that one. Excellent customer service.
  17. Me! I have 6 kids, 5 that are schooling. It is tough to fit it all in. I school 7 days a week in order to make it work.
  18. I asked my kids: Oreos Chips Candy Snickers - these are very important evidently Croutons  Little Debbie Snacks Fruit Leather Yogurt covered raisins
  19. I gave my son a colored pencil set (with erasers). That helped since it doesn't have much color.....
  20. I'm probably one of the few households that is using both materials from AoPS and TT. I agree with so many of the above posters.... do what works for you and your child. My oldest is using the AoPS series. My second child struggles with math - daily tears and very little progress until I tried TT. Do I seem the extreme differences between the curriculum? Yes, you bet I do. BUT kids are different. They just are. Some of us will never be anything more than proficient at math. Do I wish that my second could handle something more rigorous. Yep. But what I want more is for him to feel confident enough in math that he isn't paralyzed - he HAS to be proficient yk? And TT will give him that, he excels a bit even since it boosts his confidence. My 3rd child will be starting the new Beast Academy. My 4th kiddo will likely be a TT kid. It just is what it is. I'm a math/science person. My husband, is um.... not. Total words man and history buff - fitting since he is a lawyer. Our kids are extremes of us ;) Some of them flourish with a more conceptual math that asks them to dig deeper. Others are deer in headlights.... Do what works. :grouphug:
  21. No kidding! I would have thought they would have done a "test" order though possibly taking the #1 but maybe not.... I did only order the 3A set, maybe that kicked me further down the line
  22. Order ID: BA000109 <----- That is what I was using to get my number....
  23. I'm in too. 3A ordered. Wow, ordered are flying. I am number 109!
