I feel the same. Mbappe was so good! Sorry France couldn’t win it, but still an amazing match.

I'm originally from England so choosing France was the lesser of two "evils" HA HA HA. Mbappe was amazing. Thought Deschamps did an excellent job managing the match with his subs.

I don’t know ANY women, especially mothers, who don’t need alone time to recharge. I know some super social people, but past the age of thirty nobody is leaving a party energized. Nobody is getting home from an event and so jazzed that they’re cleaning their whole house. I’ve heard the definitions, I just don’t KNOW anyone who fits the extrovert label because everyone is out here getting tired and needing to go home and stop talking already.

I disagree! One of my best friends is this unicorn woman that you're looking for. She throws all of the parties and is always super jazzed after everyone leaves that she often can't fall asleep until early the next morning and often wants to talk through everything that happened with someone right after (her husband is exactly the opposite so there's always an end time on these parties, ha ha ha!). We have different personalities and have lots of chances for parties in our friend group and so we've talked about this sort of thing often.

Regarding driving schools: both my kids had lessons at driving school, but around here it is just focused on passing the test. Nothing on defensive driving, etc.

In our area an option for defensive driving and safety is the local Sheriff's office. They put on a clinic for teenage drivers (have to be 16 and have their permit) and have Deputies ride in the passenger seat while the kid is driving.  DS found it very fun and helpful. Not sure if they have something similar where you are.

I don't watch all the games, but definitely follow the whole thing. There are a lot of "surprises" in this Cup and none of my prediction are coming true now. I was expecting to see the the final between Germany and Spain

    I expected Brasil v France. We'll see!

@Beth S Japan lost to Croatia on penalties.  Was telling DS18 that I hope that the Japan team’s goalkeeper doesn’t get blamed by the public.

If anything the Japanese penalty kick takers will probably take the brunt of the heat. Their kicks were really soft. I thought the goal keeper for Japan did a great job.

Really wanted Japan to win but that's the way the cookie crumbles, I suppose.

I'm English so I'm waiting for Mbappe to run circles around us on Saturday. Really, really, really hoping to be proved wrong though!

Watching the highlights on YouTube. Not crazy over Messi or Ronaldo. I watch football more for the goalkeepers so supporting players like Manuel Neuer, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Thibaut Courtois, Alisson Becker and Ederson Moraes.

Then you'll like Ochoa's save today! (Mexico)

I'm English so.......yes, I'm watching all of the matches! LOL! Not an Argentina fan (obvs) so happy to see that result today.

  7. I have. Once in Feb 2021 and once in Feb of this year, almost an exact year in between. First time lost sense of smell and taste for a month and had a number of symptoms. Vaccinated in August 2021. Covid in Feb 2022 and hardly any symptoms and those that I had were very much cold like and presented like allergies. I tested in case it wasn't "allergies" and it was Covid.

All the news coverage I saw indicated it would be a major storm - strong winds - with a really bad storm surge -  for those on the coast. The inland central florida area was warned it would be a major rain/flooding event.

Now, at first they were hoping it would hit a front that would sheer it and weaken it, but there was always the possibility it wouldn't, and that was what happened. Maybe you were watching different coverage, or maybe I just had in the back of my mind all the previous coverage about how they can predict WHERE a hurricane will go to some extent (general path with a wide cone of uncertainty) but are not good at predicting how strong it will be, so I filtered it through that lens?

But to me, it seemed that the coast was being warned the whole time? Again, I was watching central florida news so can't really speak to what the tampa and ft meyers stations were saying, but here we were hearing that the coast would get a wallop at LEAST from a REALLy bad storm surge, and also potentially major wind. And then inland it would be a really bad rain event with a ton of flooding as ground was already saturated.

Which, pretty much, is what happened.

But, maybe those coastal stations didn't stress enough how dangerous the rain/flooding would be, and focused too much on the surge, so that people not in the area of the surge didn't realize they should get out if they were in low lying areas?

GENERALLY they say to run from water (evacuate) and hide from wind (hunker down in a sturdy building with storm shutters). Now, cat 4-5 wind and you better run from that too - which usually is the same area as the storm surge so usually works out to be the same people. Maybe not this time?

Most of the devestation I'm seeing is in the barrier island areas, west of i-75, but I don't know that area well enough to say that for sure.

I do wish they were more general with advice - "could hit anywhere on the coast, and we don't know how strong it will be. Make plans now."

You can always cancel a hotel reservation, better to prepare and not need to leave than the other way around, for sure. Heck, people are SUPPOSED to have a plan before hurricane season even starts, but that is hardly ever mentioned these days. The start of hurricane season used to be a really big deal, when I was growing up - tracking maps handed out at the grocery store, sales, etc. Lots of news stuff about planning and knowing what you will do, having your supplies ready, etc. I do think they have dropped the ball on that in recent years.

I've watched Denis Phillips in Tampa for all of the tropical weather over the years and he was saying all of these things starting from days out before Ian's landfall. I have no idea what the Ft Meyers wx stations were saying.

A question for Floridians:  News organizations have been pointing out the number of new residents who have moved to Florida in recent years.  Do these new folks know that even if their mortgage provider doesn't require it, buying FEMA flood insurance is often the wise thing to do?  Those 100 year flood plains are becoming 10 year flood plains.  Without flood insurance, many people find themselves in the cruel reality that homeowners insurance has its limitations.

I'm a native Floridian and live in a beach town on the gulf (not near Ft Meyers) but far enough back that we're not in a "flood zone" (even though south of us and north of us are part of one 🙄. I know a lot of people who live here that don't have FEMA flood insurance because they're not technically in a flood zone and it's crazy to me. I would say that we are very rare in that we do have it. I have to fight with DH every year to spend the $500 to keep the coverage but you just never know. If a cat 3 or higher were to hit us then there's no way we'd be without flooding in our house. I would bet that some of those people, especially a bit inland, don't have the insurance.

Keeping Florida people in my thoughts! I am curious under what circumstances people decide to pack up and leave, especially when they don't have family or friends to head to, and where to go, especially with the track uncertainty (we had that kind of situation unexpectedly last year (our neighbors left, we stayed -and ended up cleaning up their yard toys and tools, with their permission of course, so they wouldn't hit our home).

I live close to the coast (but not in the cone for Ian) and I will board up and leave for a 3 or higher (I've seen it go from a 3 to a 4 to a 5 in quick succession with no time to get out so I'd rather not take the chance). Being without power and mentally and physically drained from experiencing a hurricane is awful (and something I don't want to do again) and I'd want the best possible frame of mind to deal with the aftermath.

DH is currently in Orlando for work but I'm not as worried about him. We were living in Tampa in an A zone for Charley and were mandatorily evacuated to Orlando (where I grew up) and then Charley changed track and went through Port Charlotte then through were were were in Orlando. I AM concerned that this path looks similar to Charley. I hope that those who are staying are prepared and that it weakens considerably before it hits.

Oh, yes, maple infused works well. [Apologies to the non-Central Floridians for the following:] Since we moved to a house within about 10 minutes of downtown Winter Garden, I have learned I cannot be trusted with a credit card and access to The Ancient Olive. At the moment, we're working our way through a bottle of pomegranate-infused red balsamic, but we've also recently had raspberry, maple, strawberry, mango . . .

I figure, given that I don't drink wine, I'm allowed this one vice.

Oh no! We've been perusing houses in WG online for a year with the idea of moving back to Central FL and this is not good for me to hear... I LOVE olive oil and balsamic! LOL! Hmmm... going on my "pro" list...

And here I sit, reading the boards endlessly. I cannot make myself do anything.

Ah, okay. Gently, do you think you could have depression?

From what you've stated on this thread you've been through a lot. With your Mom and the history of cancer in your family, your own mammograms, all of the medical missions, Covid putting everything on hold (and the lack of medical missions, etc...), having a task oriented husband whilst being more relational yourself (stressing about people and how you affect them) etc... Lots of stress.

Do you get tired easily when there's a lot of "stuff" happening or does it energize you? Have you hit a wall with all of the "unfinished" hobbies in your life? Sometimes when I have a lot going on (or even just the thought that there's lot that needs my attention that I might be not doing well) it can make me shut down.

When things that you used to enjoy don't bring you joy anymore a good question to ask yourself is if you may be dealing with depression. Stress (even good stress) can bring you to a breaking point. It sounds like you might be there. Is there anyone in real life that you can confide in to help you to figure that out?

Either way, it's ok to not do anything. If you're to the point of really not doing anything (even basic things) then the best advice I can give is to make sure that you're showering, eating, getting out in the fresh air, and hopefully staying in the Word (if this has been hard to then confide in someone who can walk alongside you)!

  13. In the Christian community there seems to be this mythical un-knowness that people attach to God's will for our lives. Feeling unsure in the absence of direction can be debilitating, however, it doesn't have to be. He has already given us direction as to His will for us: Matthew 22:37-40 and I'd add reading Micah 6:8 as well.

Sometimes He makes His will known by opening/closing doors and giving really clear direction. Other times we make the best decision with the information we know at the time and know that He will be with us whatever the journey.

Pick something that you enjoy doing and pursue it. If it stops being a joy you don't have to continue to do it.

  14. I would definitely do what you're planning on doing, especially the Pride and Prejudice memes 😂.  I hope my DD requests this sort of thing in her junior year (my 17 year old DS would.never. HA!) I'm from England, so that sort of thing is pretty much my bread and butter.

You could make cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches and scones (or buy these if it's too faffy to do). Put them on a nice dish/plate/platter and use your best English accent when you show her what you've done. I tend to go overboard with these sorts of things, though. I may be the only "extra" English person I know (must be the many years of living in America that did it to me...LOL!)

We have a lot of short term rentals here.  The end result is that longer term rentals are few, far between, and extremely expensive.  We have a lot of local workers who can not live or rent in this area.  I know two separate people within the last year that got kicked out once their lease was over because the owner was switching to short term rentals.  Both of them were not able to find anything else to rent here and had to move over 45 minutes away.

STRs are not the only thing raising the rental rates obviously, but they are definitely a contributing factor. Supply vs demand, and there are far fewer longer term rentals on the market.

That said, I would rather see a short term rental than half a neighborhood bought out by some large, out-of-state company and rented out at outrageous amounts.  That's happening too.

This is what's happening in my area also.

Thanks again for your help, all! I had fun looking up your recommendations!

I ended up ordering the Izellah Kipling bag in Stripy Dots and I'm super exited about it (special thanks to @happi duck). I looked on eBay to use if I could find one used, but they were more expensive there than the half-price new one I found on Amazon. I actually bought a Kipling duffel bag at a thrift store four or five years ago and loved the little monkey keychain on it, but I didn't know they made purses, too. 🙂

My second choice was an Etsy purse with lots and lots of pockets, but I wasn't in love with any of the designer's current fabrics. Will continue to keep an eye out in her shop, though. 🙂

I didn't see your original post, only your update but I don't think you'll be upset with a kipling! They're my favorite and I have a few of them that work well for different purposes. They last, are well made, and wash up nicely! 😊

I wouldn’t call it privilege for me to have been poor enough to have had to do it before regardless of the overall economy. LOL But dadbum it. I liked prospering enough to go to Panera for coffee with my friends every week for $10 a month. I canceled that over 6 months ago. I canceled all my streaming services and the entire family (including those not living here) shares a PLEX account.  And we have had a LOT of house and vehicle and health expenses come up the last year that absolutely could not be put off or ignored. I’m beyond grateful the somehow we managed to take care of the most necessity items. But it means what little financial margin we had is entirely gone.  Which makes me downright jittery about taking any more financial hits. All I can do is my best to set up to hunker down and ride this out making the best of things we can.

I'm so sorry to read this. We've been in a similar spot for a number of years and are just now climbing out a bit. I felt equally sick and despondent over financial hit after financial hit and it felt like we were never going to get above water or be far from paddling furiously. It totally sucks. I'm constantly waiting for the next shoe to drop. It's very stressful.

I don't work and homeschool the kiddos so I tried to look at that as a privilege. My response about privilege was more to help myself orient my own state of mind (and wasn't a commentary on anyone else!) The fact that I have the time/energy/etc... to be forward thinking on it and possibly do *something* to mitigate it beforehand is a privilege compared to those that can't.

It is a LOT to think about.  It can feel overwhelming for people who have never had to do it before.  And it’s very time consuming.

Yes! I'm privileged in that I have the time, energy, space, and financial resources (though not much of each...enough) to be able to think through it.

What are we hearing on the rapid home test accuracy with current strains? DD12 went to a modified lock in at church Friday from 5-11pm, and Saturday 8am-12pm. All wear masks when indoors, they take them off to eat outside.

One of the kids tested positive on monday or tuesday, can't remember.

DD woke up Tusday morning with sore throat, now has sore throat and lots of sinus congestion. Tested her wednesday and thursday with Binax, negative both times.

(edited to add - she is vaccinated and wears a KF94 mask)

In February I started to get those symptoms and tested every day and the positive didn't show up until day 3 of testing. I was starting to think that testing was silly because I do have a number of environmental allergies but continued to test. I'm glad I did!
