  1. Thanks for the replies. I have an appointment for her to see her pediatrician on Wednesday afternoon.
  2. Last week a knot about the size of a pea popped up at the base of DD's skull in the center where the spine meets. It is very tender to the touch and has grown slightly larger. A nurse practitioner at church stated it was a swollen lymph node and said to give it a couple of weeks to see if it goes away; but things I am reading on the web tell me she should be seen immediately. What should I do? Teresa (worried mom) P.S. she has had vomiting off and on in the middle of the night for about 2 months.
  3. We will be using The phonics of Drawing CD. It has art lessons for the various stages. It has 30 lessons for each stage. they have these on sale right now for 35% off. http://www.teachartathome.com/ We tried Artistic Pursuits and it did not work for my daughter, but she was using the grade 4-6 book.
  4. We will be using The Phonics of Drawing CD. I covers all the learning stages and has it broken down in to 30 lessons. They have these on sale now at 35% off. http://www.teachartathome.com/
  5. Sprinkle the chops with salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning. Brown in a skillet. Pour in a can of chicken broth and add 2 bay leaves. Cover and simmer on low for about 30 minutes (this makes the chops very tender). Remove chops from broth. Put about 3 tbs of cornstarch in about 1 cup of water and stir. Over low heat; stir the cornstarch mixture into the broth to make gravy. Return the chops to the gravy. Serve the gravy over cooked rice. This is savory and yummy.
  6. We will be using Hakim's History of US with the Hewitt syllabus and tests. DD is 13 and will be in the 8th grade. We are looking forward to this year.
  7. I sat down yesterday and basically used Jann's schedule for Lial's Introductory Algebra. Some lessons I scheduled 1 day instead of 2 because they were very short (had only 2 pages of lesson with about 15 problems). I did schedule the cumulative reviews. We ended up with about 140 days; doing math 4 days a week, Monday through Thursday for about 35 weeks. We start school the day after Labor day, and will end around the middle of May. We are very excited about using Lial's for math this year and think it will be a good fit for DD. If I had been taught Algebra this way, I may have understood it better. We purchased the DVT's just to be on the safe side. Saxon just about drove us mad last year. It did not stay on one concept long enough for DD to grasp it. We looked at Jacobs; like the PP said, my daughter doesn't want to know all the whys and wherefores. Just the facts ma'am. I liked it, but I'm a tell me why kind of person. BTW, I purchased our Lial's on half.com and got the Text, DVT's, and Solutions manual for $22 including shipping. Search around and you will get a good deal.
  8. I am beginning to question my ability to homeschool my child through high school. She will be going into 8th grade this year. 1. How can I grade essays when I may not catch the errors? Can I actually help her to learn how to write a good essay so she can be successful in college? 2. I am not good with math; what if she needs help? 3. What about scholarships? Do they award those to homeschoolers? 4. She wants to be a nurse and get her BSN from a 4 year college. Would she be better off going to a high school with a allied health program and graduate already having her CNA completed? 5. Can we do the science and labs at home that she need? Please help calm my fears and answer my questions. She has been accepted to the nearby charter school that has a very good reputation. It is arts driven. DD is artistically gifted. The local highschool has a very good allied health program, but comes with all the draw backs of a public school.
  9. Hey hornblower, We have two female rats; one hooded and one cream colored. They are very much a part of our family. We got them at Petco and like to think we rescued them from being food for something else. It breaks my heart to think they may have been snake food. We also got most of the fish in our pond from the feeder tank at petsmart, (same principle as the rats).
  10. This is the plan (subject to change): Most of these will be Monday through Thursday with extra curriculars on Friday. -Lial's Introductory Algebra with DVT's -R&S 8 english and spelling -Lightning Lit 8 -Copywork, Dictation, Narration -Wordly Wise 1st semester, Vocabulary from Classical Roots 2nd semester -Apologia Physical Science with Red Wagon Tutorials -A Beka Health -Hakim's History of US with Hewitt Syllabus, and Story of US DVD from the History Channel -Trail Guide to US Geography -Fallacy Detective (every Friday) -Artistic Pursuits, the Phonics of Drawing, or Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain  (Th. & Fri.) -Meet the Great Composers 2 (every other Friday) -Visual Link Spanish (when time allows) -Sign Language for Everyone (when time allows) -Piano and Ballet Lessons
  11. I spoke with the guidance counselor at the high school in our district and was told that homeschoolers could participate, but there is a fee for each course. ETA: Jane is correct, (it has been a while since I checked into this), there is no fee for the couse, but you do have to purchase the necessary books and supplies. Maybe it depends on the county. When we lived in Transylvania county they allowed homeschoolers to do dual enrollment at the local high school. As long as they did not go over a certain amount of hours they were still considered homeschoolers. In Gaston county they do not allow dual enrollment.
  12. You may want to also check half.com. I was able to get the Introductory Algebra student text, solutions manual, and DVT's for $22 and that included shipping.
  13. Have you looked at the Red Wagon Tutorials DVD? They have the 1.0 version on sale now on e-bay for $50. It has lectures, powerpoint presentations, schedule, tests, etc. This sounds like it has everything you are looking for. I purchased one yesterday. http://cgi.ebay.com/Apologia-Exploring-Creation-Physical-Science-/330449221663?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray&hash=item4cf04ef81f There is also a schedule and bookmarks on donnayoung.org that we have printed out. http://donnayoung.org/apologia/physical.htm#ed2 HTH.
  14. She is adorable! How about Molly? I just finished watching "Wives & Daughters." Molly is the main character and has the sweetest, most loyal disposition. We use Bil Jac dog food. It has no wheat and helped our sheltie's skin and coat. It also got rid of her foot odor.
  15. You may also want to check the laws in your state. Our law states that a child has to be 12 or older. If you are pulled over by an officer and your child is in the front, you may be fined or have your driving priviledges revoked.
