I have both and let my 5 yo choose after trying each. He chose PP because of the small print in OPG. Another thought, OPG tends to have more sentences so I've used it successfully with older, weak readers. PP has more single words, it's wonderful for young readers to be able to practice reading words without struggling to understand a complete sentence. PP drills on 1 rule at a time. It also has an index of spelling rules, and spelling & pronunciation guides in the back. Best of luck! :001_smile:

Sorry, but almost. :) Okay, I think there are actually 3-4 risings between the sponge rising and everything else. Another thought, I use 2 T (3 packets) yeast to 3 C water and 7-8 C flour. My recipe gave a yeast range and suggested that if you want a faster or lighter loaf to use 2T yeast instead of 1 1/2 T. Good luck!

Have you tried starting with a sponge? You mix the water, yeast, and 1/2 the flour together and beat with a wooden spoon 100 times. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes and up to 45 minutes before you add the salt, oil, and the rest of the flour. You knead the dough at this time, and begin the normal rising process. I've done this twice in the last week and ended up with 2 batches of beautiful 100% whole wheat bread. :party: This for a woman who couldn't even get white bread to turn out right! Best of luck!

Jumping around doesn't bother me quite as much as reading 0-3 chapters of SOTW each week. My children love SOTW and are always disappointed when there is no assigned reading for the week, and I'm overwhelmed when we're covering 3 chapters. But I've found that life is easier using the schedule, and I've enjoyed the depth that Biblioplan has added to our history lessons. Hope that helps! :001_smile:

Why will you skip 8/7 with your other boys? Was it simplly too redundant?

lol, my ds is finishing Saxon 76 right now and I have 87 and Algebra 1/2 in front of me. We've always planned to complete both books but most people go straight into Algebra 1/2. The biggest difference I see is that 87 is in the style of 54-76 while Algebra 1/2 has a smaller font and is in a more 'mature' style. Also, in the last lesson, Alg. 1/2 has the child solving: 15-6+2x-4=3x+16-5x+14 while 87 only goes as far as:.4n+5.2=12. Alg. 1/2 also requires the use of a protractor and compass. 87 does not. Personally, I ended up with 2 years of pre-algebra (due to a move) and thrived in high school math. Thus, my reasoning behind 2 years of pre-algebra. HTH!

Formal math isn't necessary at K. There's the Family Math Book, lots of games, and livingmath.net. You can find plenty to do that's fun and educational. :party: A friend of mine, whose children do far better at math than my own, does math games the first few years. You certainly won't be cheating your son. :-) That being said, I am doing formal math with my ds since I'm a no-fun Mom and playing endless rounds of Uno, and making certain everything is covered gives me a headache. :banghead: Best of luck!

We completed Biblioplan Ancients last year using SOTW AG for maps and coloring sheets. Some weeks didn't have a map or coloring sheet while other weeks had several. Over all, I thought using the AG worked out and we're doing the same this year. Best of luck!

Well, Homer A & B each take 20 weeks to complete for a total of 40 weeks. That's why I'll recommend you use the Older Beginners and finish in 22 weeks even though my 11 yo skipped Aesop and started with Homer. He needs to spend the extra time absorbing Homer. :001_smile: CW does vocabulary studies on Tuesdays. Whether it suffices or not, it up to you. :D The instructor manual, at least the Homer one, is essential. I can't imagine completing Homer without it. Aesop is much easier and I don't reference it as often. Best of luck!

My 11 yo son is working with a planner. We sit down over the weekend and thoroughly go over his schoolwork and what I expect over the next week. He sits down and plans his week, including chores. Each morning he grabs his schoolbooks and disappears into his bedroom. In return for him using his planner and completing his schoolwork and chores without my nagging, he receives 30 minutes of computer time playing with his father's special game over the weekend. :D My dh has also been reviewing schoolwork, chores, and activities with my ds every 6 weeks. If all is up to par he receives a book for each area. Ds 11 loves collecting his favorite series and it provides a great motivation for him. Best of luck!

My 5th and 6th graders will be doing just Kingfisher; we're skipping the Atlas. (Mostly because I have Kingfisher and don't have the Atlas.) ;) I see no reason why you couldn't skip Kingfisher and do the Atlas instead.

Our good leather chair has developed a tear in one arm. Dh asked me if I can fix it and I have no idea how. :confused: I looked on line and saw leather repair kits that make the repairs look easy but some websites say that the results, unless you're a professional, are less than stellar. Other sites recommended stitching the tears but you also end up with the chair looking like Frankenstein. Is there any hope for salvaging it? :bigear: Thank you!

On the home page the writers said they are working on the 6th grade level. I assume the test maxes out at 5th grade until they have the next level available.

Since you have 8 weeks left and 4 weeks of school, can you double up the history and lighten each weeks load? This way you can cover the essentials of the last 8 weeks of history, have your summer break, and start next year fresh with the new year of history. :001_smile: Best of luck!
