  1. My 2nd grader just finished the Spelling by Sound & Structure book & we just picked up Shurley Grammar. There are weekly vocab words that we define & practice spelling...do I need to add spelling program too? If so, what recommendations?
  2. Thank you! That eases my mind! Good question about if we have some control--will find that out.
  3. Let me start by saying we LOVE Singapore & plan to stick with it; however, we may be joining a co-op next year & they use Horizons math for elementary. One "plus" is that we will choose our own math for 4th grade up, so Horizons would be temporary...I just don't want it to mess up the math they've learned up to this point by using a different approach. Also, I would continue to supplement with Singapore at home along with the Horizons. I love Singapore's mental math approach. A few questions: 1) My boys are strong in math--will they get confused by using Horizons in the co-op...even if I continue Singapore at home? 2) What are the differences? Like, will they be learning things that will totally reverse the mental math approach? Thanks in advance. I really want to make sure we are making a wise decision and not confusing our children!
  4. Looking at using Horizons workbooks...the teacher manual is really expensive. Is it something I would need or use?
  5. Does anyone know how this works? We're thinking of visiting Williamsburg in November and was wondering the % discount & also if it includes the combo tickets too ?(to Busch Gardens, Jamestown, etc.) Do you just present your HSLDA card to receive the discount at the ticket office?
  6. We enjoyed the Pathway Readers too. :001_smile:
  7. Mission of Motherhood :001_smile: Adore Sally Clarkson!
  8. We are going to use MFW Adventures for 2nd...will probably start sometime in the next month or so (we school year around). We're using all the things MFW recommends for language arts, etc. Singapore 2A/2B has been a great fit for us as well.
  9. I 2nd the Rightstart games...I think they're $50 from the RS website. They are a lot of fun & help w/the mental math practice...even my 4 year old loves the games. I looked thru my friend's RS teacher's manual recently & I'm still not sold on RS. I've been considering it for 2 years and still don't feel peace about it! I have several friends using it and they all LOVE it, but they also take 1-1.5 hours a day to do math...it just seems like too much. We are using MFW right now & their math recommendation and plan to jump to Singapore next year, but will continue with RS math games...that's the "plan" anyway! As we know, it could change!
  10. Are there any good suggestions for DVD at-home learning acoustic guitar? My DH is wanting to learn and teach our kids. Thanks!
  11. We finished 100 EZ Lessons in September...we did the BOB books along with it and that has been a nice addition. Now we're doing the Pathway readers and my son LOVES them. They are really cute stories and it's the same characters all the way through the entire series.
  12. Thanks ladies! I found someone that is going to let me look thru her Y1 TOG, but I'm really thinking MFW is the place for us. I appreciate your input...I feel like it has just confirmed my thoughts to stick with MFW for this stage of our lives--why change if I love it!?
  13. I am looking long-term...it seems that TOG is similar to MFW in how you can teach multiple aged children together. So, I could do TOG and also add SOTW?
  14. We are just about to wrap up MFW K5. We have really loved it! I have been drawn to TOG for a while, but I'm just not sure if it's the right place for us at this stage of our lives or if it'd be too much for me to organize and teach for a 1st grader. My kids are 5, 3, and 2...so would I be biting off too much to try TOG next year? Thanks in advance!
  15. I am certainly not an expert in this dept since I'm such a new homeschooler, but I will say that I have totally adored Handwriting without Tears...we just started a few months ago and have seen dramatic improvements with my 5-year old. It might be worth looking into if you've never looked at it.
