  1. I've looked at Summit, Worldview, Truth Project and Josh Harris' Just Do Something. But none of these are what I'm really looking for. I'm trying to find a leadership course for teens that we can use in our church for a mid-week offering. Many of these kids are getting worldview through their school, so many of the great courses would be redundant. Other ideas? I've posted on the High School Board, but thought I should post here too. :)

  3. So, do you do your own shellac nails or something like that? I'd love to be able to get these kind of results, but do it myself.
  4. My sweet sweet mother-in-law gave me a gift certificate for a shellac manicure and I love it! Fortunately I got it in a very natural shade, but now my nails are growing out and it's starting to peel from my cuticle on up. I can't afford to regularly get a manicure, and so I'm at the point where I just want to get it off. But, my nail polish remover doesn't work. Do I really have to go back to the salon and pay $10 for someone to take it off?
  5. Just ran to the store and back for some Benadryl and will continue to keep an eye on her. You ladies are the best! Thank you!
  6. We had shrimp tonight for dinner ~ 3 hours ago. Grace, my 17 yo, just now got really puffy and numb around her eyes. I can't think of anything else it would be. I don't have any Benadryl, so I gave her a Zyrtec. Will that do the trick, do you think? Or should I run up to the store and get Benadryl? She isn't itchy in her throat, or anywhere else. TIA!
  7. I haven't tutored. I just have had kids in Challenge A, B, and II this year. I LOVE Challenge B and would definitely consider that. The mock trial project is AMAZING. However, if I were to do this year over again, I would have my kids take science outside of CC.
  8. I thought about it and was actually approached to tutor Challenge III. While I know I'm a good teacher, in that I have the skills to lead a class, facilitate interesting discussion, mentor students, etc, I'm in no way qualified to teach chemistry or Latin III. Actually, this was one of the things that made me question the CC method for high school. I think it's possible for many of us, as moms, to choose to homeschool all the way through high school, and do a good job with it. But, most of us do outsource. With CC, I have been SO happy with the women who have invested in our kids. They are dynamic, excellent teachers, and have blessed our kids. However, I do want my high schoolers to sit under people who are passionate and knowledgeable in their subject area. The biggest weakness that I have found with CC at the high school level is in the area of math and science. The science trajectory is a year "behind." This is particularly tough on STEM-minded kids. So, while I would personally enjoy Challenge A, B, or even I or II, I don't feel like I could really provide what the high school level kids need in terms of expertise in science, math, or Latin. Which Challenge level are you thinking about tutoring?
  9. Grace and I will be there April 14, next Saturday. It will be good to be back in Charlottesville!
  10. Just posted this on my blog yesterday: My Very Favorite Easter Tradition (http://www.cindyfinley.com/2012/04/my-very-favorite-easter-tradition.html)
  11. We looked at Capenwray for Sara Maria last year. She ended up going on to college, but would have loved to spend a year there. :) Grace was accepted yesterday at the University of Virginia. She was wait-listed at Wake Forest, and we're still waiting to hear from William & Mary. No financial aid news yet, but we are SO excited that she was accepted at UVA.
  12. Popping in for a second during my Lent "Board Break" to ask you all to pray for my sweet friend Kate and a young man named Henry. Kate is in Uganda and has been working with Henry, a 14 year-old boy. After getting him settled in school, he ran. You can read more at my blog (below) or visit Kate's blog here: http://hisdaughterhislily.wordpress.com/2012/03/02/loving-henry/
  13. I have posted a Bible reading plan on my blog. The purpose of this plan is simply to help us to fix our eyes intentionally on Jesus over these Lenten days. I'm not going to be on the Boards through Lent, but I will be on my blog. I'd love to see you there!
  14. Thank you, Chris! I appreciate the wisdom and experience you bring to the table!
  15. Once we have a MAJOR garage sale, then we could have fun space. There actually is a bathroom in the garage. I need to look and see if it would work to put a door from the space we're thinking of converting into a bedroom directly into that bathroom. She's totally fine with it being a family space and guest space as well as her space. She's fabulous with power tools and a paint brush and it will be great to give her something productive to do over Spring Break. :)
  16. I'm very appreciative of the information regarding schools in MS and in TX. Thank you very much! Grace, at this point, doesn't want to consider other schools. I want to respect her decision, even if it mean she misses an opportunity to matriculate in the fall. I will definitely keep you all posted! Thanks again!
  17. I think so. Sara Maria will be home for Spring Break and I may make this a project we work on together and let her decide whether she wants to call this space, "home," or simply and escape place when she needs it.
  18. Yep. You could do this and have them tuck it under their clothes - a passport holder.
  19. How old are your children? When ours were little, we dressed them in red shirts and overalls so we could easily locate them in the airport. Then we put a label on their back with our last name and cell phone number. This way, a stranger couldn't call them by name, but someone could easily help them get in touch with us. When they were a bit older, and we traveled to Ukraine, we wrote our phone numbers with a Sharpie, on their arm under their sleeve. I was afraid they'd lose a card.
  20. Yes, we'd use it beyond her. It would function as a guest room when she wasn't here, or as simply a space for someone to get some space when they need it. We've talked about having a friend of hers who is having a hard time at home live, with us for the summer. It could be that we fix it up, but use it for her friend for the summer, and then it's available to her after that.
