  1. No, as far as I know, there's no safeguard. There was a case locally where a lot of money was donated to a family whose mother died after giving birth to fragile, premature twins. The father had various financial problems and essentially embezzled most of the money, lost custody of the babies, and was sued by his wife's parents who adopted the babies and needed the money for medical expenses. It was a mess.

Donate to people you know and trust, or donate with the understanding that the money may be used for anything.

  2. I think an article about Jesus around Palm Sunday is perfectly appropriate. If that historical figure is being celebrated by some, there are also others who would enjoy a candid, thoughtful examination of the facts surrounding that person.

And, as FaithManor points out, Christians in our country enjoy such a privileged and protected place that many are a bit oblivious to the slights to other religions. They also often fail to realize how theistically-centered America seems to those of us who don't believe as they simultaneously declare that someone has declared a war on Christmas. Well, no one told us non-believers about that war! Or maybe we missed the memo while we were going about our business...[emoji13]

  3. I would be careful with the magic eraser. It works because of friction, so it's going to make tiny scratches in the finish where subsequent markers will leave indelible marks, I think.

I hope they get it worked out...telling DH I wasted money won't go over well at all.

I hope your husband will be understanding since you didn't do anything wrong here. The company took your money and wasted it. It's never fun to lose money, but grace and anger directed at the right people helps keep relationships loving.

  5. What a way to "celebrate" a wedding anniversary. I'd be so fuming mad I don't think I'd be able to talk to this person for a long time. That is not fair to a family. Way too self-absorbed.

Unfortunately, mental illnesses are not typically concerned with fairness. [emoji17]

I'm glad she made it home ahead of the storm - which hasn't lived up to its predictions here in Syracuse, but still!

  7. My daughter and I played twice today - back to back games. We are hooked! We'll try the app next. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

For the eggnog lovers in the thread, here's my favorite recipe. I made this batch three years ago - no joke. It's perfection personified at this point. Plus, you look brave/crazy when you tell your friends what you're drinking!

  8. I've been eyeing this game for awhile. Last I looked though it was $50! Not quite ready to shell out that kind of money for a board game.

What's the best price you've seen for the game?

We got it at Target for $40 this week, so it's probably still on sale.
  9. We just got the original Ticket to Ride, and I think that you can "add onto" routes to complete one. See photo:

My routes were Portland-Phoenix and Seattle-Los Angeles. Can't I just complete both by finishing the San Francisco to Portland segment?

My husband has already quit playing and I'm two eggnogs in...whoops.

  10. That yielded a total of one option between here and Syracuse (well, technically 3, but one says no tent camping, and the other allegedly is permanently closed). I clicked on the remaining one, which is a NY wildlife management area, and it seems like it's possible, and then clicked on other NY wildlife areas, but they generally specifically don't allow camping - the one in Wyoming county is the only one between here and Syracuse that allows it (in case anyone is wondering why I keep mentioning Syracuse, it's because I'm not even going to bother looking further than that until I find a plausible path to Syracuse). I then looked at state parks, and I'm having trouble understanding the rules - they say that generally it's allowed, if you're more than 150 feet from water, tracks, and roads, but then the specific parks I look at say that camping is from mid-May through mid-October, so I'm unclear on that. And I'm still not excited about her camping alone in the snow somewhere, especially if it's 150 ft from roads and tracks, aka harder to be found if something goes wrong (I know, it's no worse than her plan).

Native Central NY'er here who plans to do the Erie Canal bike ride across the state - and has done portions as full-day trips. I would not attempt this in the winter. It's not safe. The trail isn't completed, so there are areas where you are on surface roads - including through my beautiful city of Syracuse, snowiest city in the country where our streets are plowed, but snow piles up everywhere and freezes rock-solid. The trail is used for snowmobiling in some areas, but not all. This morning, it was 9°F outside. Not warm. Once it warms up to the 30s or so, it starts to snow. Sometimes a lot...

As far as camping at state parks, camping is not allowed after October unless it says camping is allowed. The Erie Canal trail passes very close to Green Lakes State Park, but no one is allowed to camp there in the winter. DEC campgrounds may has different rules because they are more primitive.

I wish you luck. This is a very difficult situation.

  11. I wondered about that too, but the part where it started out acting like a respiratory virus doesn't fit.

Also, while the first person in my house got sick on Tuesday some family members didn't come down with it until a later in the week, like we were passing it along.

Did everyone who got sick also have a runny nose, etc.? The zero patient may have just had a cold plus the stomach virus. FWIW, the majority of cases of "food poisoning" are actually viral stomach viruses. Potlucks are the perfect vector meal!

  12. Wasn't there a woman with a stroller??? I can't remember the whole thing but I think a woman with a stroller kept pushing a boarder off of the sidewalk or something???

The cupcake kefuffle. That was the best.

I remember that one! Some weirdo kept trying to run the boardie off the sidewalk with her stroller.

  13. My husband is a mechanical engineer with a BSci degree, no masters, no PE licensure. He's worked for the same company for 20 years, though, so maybe the job market has changed and now more education would be required, but I don't think the engineers his company hires have additional schooling, either. Much would depend on the local job market, I'm sure.

  14. Wow - these are horrifyingly awesome. I was going to post that one Christmas I went upstairs to my bedroom for something while guests were downstairs and found my step-mother in my bed, covers pulled up to her chin. She said she was cold. Okay...BUT WHY ARE YOU IN MY BED?!! At least she hadn't put my pajamas on, I guess?

  15. A friend of mine lives there. If you'd like to PM me, I'll pass on her contact info. She's been happy with the activities available and the consultant? supervisor? Whatever the person is called who checks over your work in PA has been easy to with with. She came from NY, so that was an unfamiliar experience for her.

    And there's a Wegmans there - always a plus! :)
