  1. Yes, and I am bringing my third son, age 10, so a 1-bedroom is needed. I can work while they sleep.
  2. Thank you. This is what I am looking for. When I asked prospective landlords about parking, they tell me "I am on my own."
  3. How long is the train ride into NJ? How often does it run?
  4. The last time we went to Philly, my husband did all the driving, so I didn't pay that much attention to it but thought it was heavy traffic. Ideally, I would like to leave the car in its spot and use public transportation and walk around the city. It's not even the traffic. I do not parallel park my minivan very well and I hate to squeeze into tight spots. I'm just not a great urban driver. I can drive in Boston (because I have to) but it still makes me nervous. My husband likes driving in Manhattan. Nothing bothers him.
  5. I've made notes of all the places. I can't wait to eat there! I am trying to find an apartment finder. The HIE wants over $200 a night. I like the Hilton Suites Place on Arch St., but the parking is $40/day. I am looking for an apartment near the hospital and Rittenhouse Square. It's peak time for Philly, but I am not so stressed about it today. I was so stressed about it a couple of days ago that I called about just boarding my daughter but I think she is just too young for that amount of time and we would be so far away.
  6. I believe it. It's like driving in Boston. That's why I don't want to stay too far.
  7. Check your state laws about contracts for large purchases. Many states allow 3 business days to cancel a big purchase. That should have been in the paperwork they gave you to sign, if applicable. (They may not have let you know so don't assume if they didn't inform you, then you can't cancel.) Check with the BBB and the state attorney general's office consumer division.
  8. I thought of this. How do you find an apartment finder? Is it the same as a real estate agent?
  9. I found these maps. They help. The problem now is to find a furnished short-term rental in a decent area that is close. :)
  10. I finally found some real estate agents who are willing to help me find a short-term furnished rental. It took a lot of searching on the Internet to get some names. I'll post an update when I get a place.
  11. The Rock School is at 1101 S. Broad St. I was looking at apartments to the northwest of Broad St. Most of these have bus stops on the next corner. The problem is parking. People I know who went to the school last year told me not to stay in South or Southwest Philly.
  12. I'm not a great urban driver even thought I drive in Boston and I have driven in northern Virginia a lot. When we stayed in Philly on my husband's business trip, we stayed at the airport area but I couldn't find anything cheaper there. I was trying to find something nearby so I could just store the car and use public transportation. I don't want a long commute for my daughter either. The school recommends a 4-mile radius for a short commute. They claim the 4-mile commute could take up to 25 minutes.
  13. I can't afford $140 a night with the hotels. The tax rate is approximately 15% so I have to take that into account with parking. We are driving down and so I will have to have the car. I would like to find a realtor and find an apartment rental but all the online leads are not helpful. Airbnb.com was not much help. People want too much for their apartments or they have very strange house rules. If I am spending this kind of money, I want to decide my own house rules.
  14. I found these on airbnb.com through a recommendation on this board. How would I find an agency to rent through? Do I just call a realtor?
  15. How do I find garages? ETA: The circled area on the Google Map has cross streets such as South St., Lombard St., Christian St.
  16. To anyone who lives in Philly or knows Philly, what can you tell me about these streets and its surrounding neighborhood: South 18th, 19th, 21st St., Philadelphia? I am looking to rent a short-term apt. on this street this summer while my daughter attends SI at the Rock School. I would like to know about safety, parking, anything you want to tell me. Please be honest. You may PM me if you wish. I basically want to know if the neighborhood is a place where I want to stay or if I should just go to a hotel. If you would not stay there, I want to know. Also, could someone explain the parking situation. Most ads say no free parking. Where would I park? Also, anything I should ask the owner? Thanks!
  17. Do you want all these problems on one sheet? I don't know if any site has that. A lot of these sites let you generate just a few problems of one kind on one sheet. Some sites are: Math-aids.com math-drills.com homeschoomath.net You pick the topic you want and then generate the sheet.
  18. Use Equation Editor. Do you know there are sites that generate free math drill sheets?
  19. I just say "Thank you. It is so kind of you, etc." Refusing a person's gift by giving them the money for it is rude. One of the nicest things people can do for another person is give a gift. A gift does not require reciprocating. Otherwise, it's called "barter." If someone "gives" you something expecting something back, then it is not a gift and you do not have to accept that kind of "gift".
  20. Why don't you board it up then? Or ask your landlady to board it up? The person she hired is not going to board up the porch.
  21. How can she be banned from competition?
  22. I had a 6 qt. Rival that overcooked and I had filled the pot each time. I have an old metal West Bend and it works well, except it will overcook a little if it is not full. I'm impressed with the Ninja cooker and the Instant Pot, so I am going to check them out.
  23. If they give 24 hours notice for a specific problem, that is all they can inspect unless other parts of the house are related to the problem. A landlord can't just wander into your bedroom if they are there for a specific problem. It is not a rental inspection. Check your state laws for tenants. If she gives you notice she's there to inspect, then it is a different story, she can see your house. However, she can't change her tune to an inspection when she's there for a raccoon. Your are under no obligation to invite her in. She is there for the raccoon, which is outside. Did she say she was going to come into your house at the same time? She can only come in if, for example, it's discovered that the raccoon managed to do interior damage.
  24. My son just turned 15 in Nov. and is now a freshman. I would follow the Sept. 1 cutoff for birthdays. However, it is more and more common to consider summer birthdays to be "young". I guess they are backtracking to April. If this is the case, why don't they just change the age to 7 for compulsory education and graduate at 19?
  25. Did your pain come on after he did the cavities? If so, I would think that the pain is related to his work. I would tell the dentist that I am there for a second opinion and let him do an examination without telling specifics. Is the jaw pain coming from gum pain? You can be on antibiotics for dental work. In fact, the dentist has given me antibiotics for infections of the gum.
