  1. Has anyone had shipping issues with this company? Just wondering if they are notorious for slow shipping. My order has been "in processing" for a while, and they're not responding to e-mails. I'm thinking I need to call them.
  2. I, too, want to focus on writing with my ds, and that's why I chose Write Shop this year. I like it for the same reasons you listed, and I'm really looking forward to getting started with it.
  3. Hi! I have two kids for whom school has been absolutely toxic -- physically and emotionally. I don't know what we would do if homeschooling were no longer an option. But I pray that that will never be the case. So from where I stand now, ps is *not* an option for them. Another of my kids is in college. And the fourth -- he's always been homeschooled and says he always wants to be. I wouldn't rule out a good private school, which we don't have near us right now. But ps is not an option for him, either. If it's not broken...
  4. That's what I learned. I had heard that, but I was confused because there are pictures (illustrations) of people in the Rod and Staff and Christian Light Education books. The difference, I *think,* is that the Pathway materials are Amish and the others are Mennonite.
  5. I like the Pathway Readers. Ds struggles with reading, and there is something about the type in these books that really helps him. After a few days of using them, though, he got very frustrated: "Mom. why are there no pictures of *people* in these stories?!" (He's an Aspie and this sort of thing bugs him.) Apparently the Amish don't feel that it's appropriate to include images of themselves in their publications. There are illustrations of plenty of other things, but no people. ;)

  7. It depends on the child. Some kids absolutely don't need that much review, if any, and are enormously frustrated by it because, for them, it is a waste of their time! Other kids, though, do need it. So it's a factor that has to be taken into consideration when choosing a math program.
  8. At some point topics from the past are just assumed to be learned (and are used in the current work) -- for instance, in a 5th grade math text you would no longer have review of basic addition -- you would be *using* that knowledge in more difficult work. And not every topic is reviewed in every lesson in TT; after learning about naming angles, for instance, you'd see that topic in the next few lessons, and then thereafter maybe every third lesson. In TT you have a new concept in most lessons (or sometimes an expansion of a topic that was just introduced); the actual number of problems in that lesson related to that topic is minimal (this is a lot like Saxon). So the remainder of the lesson is largely review. Some people consider this a negative; for us, it's not, because I have kids who *need* that much regular review and who does better when a topic is introduced in tiny bites, as it is in Saxon or TT.
  9. I accept what you're saying, but I see a difference between a program like TT that spirals through multiple topics in the course of a text and really does have regular review (as opposed to "every so often" review, which for many kids is simply not enough) and MUS, which focuses primarily on one topic per level, even with occasional review.
  10. I have a student book for R & S Math 5 with a copyright date of 1995. It's my understanding that the TM has been revised since then. Does anyone know if you can use the revised TM with an older student book? Thanks for your help! :)
  11. Well, you're 40 now, and I agree with the posters on your thread about why 40 is great that public opinion no longer matters once you reach this age. So you can now eat Nutella on Ritz crackers to your heart's content. :D
  12. I would pick TT, for two reasons: 1. It has more of a standard scope and sequence than MUS (at least, that's what I've heard; not sure if that applies to all grades or just the early grades). 2. It has regular review built into it, as opposed to the mastery approach of MUS. My kids need the former approach.
  13. What is it about the Jersey shore and hurricanes in September?! We used to go to Wildwood in mid-to-late September, until we figured out that the hurricanes always knew when we were there and would ruin our week. ;)
  14. Is there a gagging smiley? That would creep me out. I'm registered at Homeschool Classifieds, and the other day I got my first "Nigerian e-mail" response to one of my listings: you know, the old "I'll send you a bogus check for a lot of money and you send me a smaller amount of money that you will never see again" thing. Shudder.
  15. Another year older, another year wiser! ;) (And honey, I'm pushing 50, which is even better! :D)
  16. Do you ever forget where you put it? I have hidden things in places that I think are ingenious -- and then forgotten where they were. Not good when you need a chocolate fix. :D
  17. Check your settings (under User CP on the top left of the page). Something similar happened to me, and my 'sent' messages weren't showing up. I think I had to set it specifically to save my sent messages.
  18. Please don't say you hate chocolate. Even my MIL loves chocolate, and she hates everything.
  19. Secret shame -- 'cause if I told anyone, I might have to share. :D
