  1. How do I find our state's homeschool code?
  2. We homeschool, but my ds is taking a practice PSAT (he is a sophomore) at a local private school. Will the school see his results? Also, is there somewhere on the test that you mark you are a sophomore, so they know it is a practice? Thanks
  3. My vacuum picks up dirt, but it sometimes shoots dirt out the back of it. Does anyone know what is causing this, or how I can fix it? It has been a great vacuum, but it just recently started doing this.
  4. May I ask what sort of treatment your husband had? Did they do radiation? For what it's worth, it isn't a matter of not wanting the biopsy. It is a matter of not wanting to spread any cancer through needle biopsy. I have found a place (in California) that does power color doppler sonograms instead of needle biopsies. I just am trying to find somewhere closer that does them. Since a negative on the biopsy doesn't mean anything (it could just mean that they didn't get any cancer cells in the biopsy...) It makes it very frustrating to go through with it. IF they don't find cancer cells this time, then they'll just want to biopsy again next year. And keep going until they do. And from what I understand most men will eventually get prostate cancer, if they get old enough, and most of the cancers are so slow that the man dies from something else first. It just makes this all very frustrating and confusing.
  5. Has anyone had a male family member who did not want to get a needle biopsy to try to diagnose prostate cancer? In a DRE a nodule was found. PSA is like 1.4. Seems very low. Family member has no other symptoms. He does have kidney stones, and stones are an option as to what the nodule could be. Not kidney stones of course, but stones. Whatever that would mean. Dr. wants to do a needle biopsy, family member is apprehensive. Many people think needle biopsies spread cancer cells to outside of the prostate--therefore causing more problems--spreading cancer... Many times, the biopsies have false negatives. That just requires more biopsies. I've read about color sonograms, that show if there is prostate cancer. His Dr. isn't interested in discussing it. At this time, everywhere I find that does these are located out of state. We are in Texas. Dr. is pretty headstrong that all he will do is needle biopsy. Argh. Family member feels pretty certain that he does not want a needle biopsy. However, none of us want family member to have cancer. Can anyone help here with advice?
  6. Definitely thyroid issues. If I'm using anything other than Armour thyroid for medication, my hair starts falling out again. It's the worst symptom of low thyroid, as far as I'm concerned.
  7. When all else fails.....resort to bribery.... Find some special toy or something that she would like, and as soon as she's got her multiplication tables down, it's hers. I wouldn't do this for most things, but you've gotta learn those multiplication facts. It holds everything else up. Seriously. When there is a prize dangled in front of her, her motivation will increase. This has really worked for us. :0)
  8. Yes, that is the answer I'm getting also, but it keeps telling me I'm wrong. Argh. we've tried entering it as 33810000 cubic centimeters, 33,810,000 cubic centimeters, 3.381 x 10^7 cubic centimeters.... Is that how you type out 10 to the 7th?
  9. A box is measured to be 2.3 m by 4.2 m by 3.5 m. What is its volume in cubic centimeters (cc)? Thanks
  10. I had "heard" the same thing. However, if it is in the law, then it should apply to all. What about this further clarification by the Attorney General? Further clarification: Attorney General Opinion DM-446 (1st complete paragraph page 7) Senate Bill 1 moreover, reenacted the provisions that expressly recognize and regulate the UIL, with amendments. It invalidated certain UIL rules limiting student eligibility for competitions, by providing that participation rules would apply “only when the student is under the direct supervision of an employee of the school or district in which the student is enrolled or at any other time specified by resolution of the board of trustees of the district.“34 According to the Attorney General, Section 33.081 paragraph B invalidated UIL participation rules for someone. The question is, who? It is not for those who are enrolled. IT invalidated it for those who are not enrolled. Who would be participating that is not enrolled? See, everyone who competes in UIL, is under the supervision of some sponsor. Faculty, coach, etc. Certain UIL participation rules would be invalidated for someone under the supervision of someone in a school where they are NOT enrolled. Who could this be other than homeschoolers or private schooled students?
  11. A few weeks ago someone in a thread (can't remember which one) mentioned in passing that homeschoolers could not play sports for public schools in Texas. I found the following online, and am curious if this law is not referring to homeschoolers or private schoolers, then to whom is it referring? I will post the Texas Education Code here: http://law.justia.com/texas/codes/ed/001.00.000001.00.html Texas Education Code Title 1. General Provisions, Chapter 1. General provisions, Section 1.001.APPLICABILITY. (a) This code applies to all educational institutions supported in whole or in part by state tax funds unless specifically excluded by this code. Subsection (b) gives the only exclusions being mental hospitals and prisons. §ection 1.002. EQUAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES OR OPPORTUNITIES. (a) An educational institution undertaking to provide education, services, or activities to any individual within the jurisdiction or geographical boundaries of the educational institution shall provide equal opportunities to all individuals within its jurisdiction or geographical boundaries pursuant to this code. http://law.justia.com/texas/codes/ed/002.00.000033.00.html CHAPTER 33. SERVICE PROGRAMS AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIESSUBCHAPTER D. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES §ection 33.081. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. (b) A student enrolled in a school district in this state or who participates in an extracurricular activity or a University Interscholastic League competition is subject to school district policy and University Interscholastic League rules regarding participation only when the student is under the direct supervision of an employee of the school or district in which the student is enrolled or at any other time specified by resolution of the board of trustees of the district. Further clarification: Attorney General Opinion DM-446 (1st complete paragraph page 7) Senate Bill 1 moreover, reenacted the provisions that expressly recognize and regulate the UIL, with amendments. It invalidated certain UIL rules limiting student eligibility for competitions, by providing that participation rules would apply “only when the student is under the direct supervision of an employee of the school or district in which the student is enrolled or at any other time specified by resolution of the board of trustees of the district.“34 http://www.oag.state.tx.us/opinions/opinions/48morales/op/1997/pdf/dm0446.pdf OK, it is me again....regarding the Attorney General's clarification, how else would anyone participate in UIL (which governs all state sporting events between schools) who is not enrolled in a public school, unless Section 1.002 grants access to private schooled (homeschooled) students? What do you think?
  12. Our Hastings store will resurface them for like $2. Best thing I've ever found. It really works, when nothing else will. You might call places like Hastings, Blockbuster, or any store that rents/sells dvds. They probably have a machine that resurfaces them very cheaply.
  13. How do you manage computer time between yourself and 4 kids? Everyone wants a turn. We want minimal conflict. How do you work this out?
  14. You've gotten some great advice here....I wanted to mention that when I was getting my thyroid adjusted, I had many times of feelings like these. It's actually my first clue that I need to get it checked. Since being on the right dosage of Armour thyroid, I haven't experienced this. It could be related to other hormone issues as well. Please do not suffer with this very long. Talk to your doctor. It can so often be something chemical. Praying you have peace. K. One of the most helpful things for me, when I was sort of freaking out with feelings of panic or anxiety, was something I read online. Instead of pacing around, or begging God to take away these thoughts/fears, just take a deep breath, and acknowledge that you are worried, and realize it will pass. They said instead of fighting it, sort of accept it. Realize you've been here before, and gotten through it. And you will be ok. You might google best ways to deal with panic attack. There was a lot of great advice.
  15. I am!!! But I'm already looking around for what next, and I've always liked the idea of Zumba.....
  16. How long are the workouts? Do you like them?
  17. I know from personal family experience.... that many elderly people see the word colored as the most respectful thing to say. They cringe to hear someone say "that black guy."
  18. Hey, they have an online deal, where you buy tickets, print them at home. Any ticket for this summer is $29.99. I think that is the best deal I've seen so far.
