Domestic Violence Awareness month: Did you know this about abusers?
Santi replied to Laurie4b's topic in The Chat Board
You're victim blaming right there. People don't leave abusive situations for a long list of reasons from things like love and psychological issues to just being scared or telling yourself it doesn't matter or not having the resources to get far enough away. -
Sharing More about changes to ACT and SAT
Santi replied to Nscribe's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
It just seems ridiculous to me that so many schools are switching to electronic everything while the computers at schools are still terrible. I live in a quite well off part of town, but all the schools around us still have really old computers that barely work. I also definitely don't understand how there's room in a computer lab. Again, maybe it's just near me, but the computer lab fits one class, so even if you were only going to give a test to one grade there wouldn't be enough room. -

Domestic Violence Awareness month: Did you know this about abusers?
Santi replied to Laurie4b's topic in The Chat Board
I'm sure that's not the case for all abusers (especially as some are women) but I believe that's a lot of it. My 1st husband was abusive and it was definitely a result of his ingrained kind of misogyny. I think a lot of men do feel entitled to have whatever they want from a woman. Not necessarily because they're a bad person, but because of how society is. When women are assaulted they're often told they should've been wearing less revealing clothes, shouldn't have provoked him, and so on. And then you have the part where the abusive men get more pity than the abused woman, like in that Ohio rape case earlier this year. What that girl went through was terrible, yet all some people were talking about was oh no, those boys have had their lives ruined! Basically rather than telling men not to abuse women we tell women not to provoke men because they of course then have the right to hurt us. Then when they do hurt us it's still our fault because we should've been in charge of the situation. -
So he thinks removing god from public education is disgusting but so is having the government tell us what our kids should think? Basically, I don't want the government to tell my kids what to think unless it's that they should be my religion. Gotta love that attitude.

I think because it would be easier to leave quickly/without being noticed at the back aisle? I definitely don't think that's the case for everyone or even the majority of people sitting in that space though.

I find that quite different- there might've been a different way, but you were protecting the dog. I also understand wanting to protect your kids. I just don't think he's at all scared of dogs or scared for dogs or anyone else's safety really. My anger was directed at him, not you, sorry.

There's something called a green school opening quite near us (which we're highly against, but that's a whole different story). We attended a night where they described the school to people who were considering paying the tuition to go there. They plan on doing full lessons outside of every subject, tying it all to nature. The science lessons are partially going to be based around this little creek, identifying life and such. I'm afraid I can't provide ideas but I have heard of it and it sounds like a fun thing for a lot of kids. Good luck!

The dog trying to bite you doesn't mean strangling it isn't abuse. If you can't handle a dog snapping at you without physically hurting it, get a tiny dog or no dog at all.

Dd and I have both suffered from anxiety/depression, but not really at concerts/plays with the exception of going there on a date or something. When I get anxious or panic it's just a bad feeling? It's hard to describe I suppose. I usually feel unsafe like something very bad is going to happen even if I'm only anxious because of something normal like talking to someone new. I'm sure there are studies somewhere showing an idea of how many people suffer from it. I know a lot of people who have experienced it but I'm guessing that's at least partly because I looked for people who felt the same way.

If he wants to, I don't see why not. The kids at ps here learn around 8 anyway. http://www.kidzone.ws/cursive/

I didn't see this when I looked it up before, thanks!

I don't know how else to give her a grade.

Transcripts and Taking an Extra Year
Santi replied to goldberry's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I think it being stressful is reason enough, so long as it's what you both think is right. My dd had personal issues in what was supposed to be 9th grade and since she's always been a bit younger than the other kids in her grade level, she didn't mind calling that 8th grade and making this year 9th. The year has just begun, but she's already much happier with more time to study fun subjects and time for scouts etc. Again, I've seen public schools and lots of other homeschoolers give high school credit for advanced 8th grade courses, so I doubt that will ever pose a problem. -
Conservative Christian Parents - social issues ?
Santi replied to Roxy Roller's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Maybe I'm negative or over protective or something, but I would be careful about waiting too long to talk about rape/sexual assault type things. I know they're not a fun subject, but I think the high school age is definitely a time where teenagers can easily be put into situations like that and I wouldn't want my daughter (or son) to not know what to do. -
Transcripts and Taking an Extra Year
Santi replied to goldberry's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
You do have to check with colleges to see if that will work though. Some do want it listed by year. I've seen lots of people put a column for 8th grade or just put the classes with 9th grade. I don't think it's wrong, she did the work and should get credit. -
Homeschooling for Philosophical Reasons
Santi replied to shinyhappypeople's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Because the quote was referring to how women were left out of history unless they caused trouble, which has never been the case for men. -
Thought I replied to this earlier, sorry. It's definitely a class, not extracurricular. I just wanted to know whether those courses would satisfy requirements for fine arts credits, or if fine arts would have to be things like choir/actual art rather than history/etc.

Homeschooling for Philosophical Reasons
Santi replied to shinyhappypeople's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I probably missed your point, but that's really a feminist quote and I don't think applying it to men is fair. -
We're doing art history this year, architecture next year, and some sort of film study the year after. Not making actual films, but the history of it and hopefully some other stuff once we figure that all out. Are these fine arts credits or electives? I'm pretty sure art history would be fine arts but I have no clue about the others.

Homeschooling for Philosophical Reasons

I think a public school system is necessary, but imo it will always be lacking. -
My daughter learned cursive in third grade and was told that fourth grade and on they would have to write everything ever in cursive. They've never used it besides signing their names. Dd definitely writes faster in print considering she's a perfectionist and cursive takes her forever, whether she's mastered it or not. If I was going to homeschool from the beginning I would have my kid practice it for a while just in case but some people just don't like it and don't have much use for it.

History of Science/Technology
Santi replied to mom4peace's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We found copies of The Best American Science Writing for 2001-2005 (there are other years) at a thrift store and I think they have pretty cool things about assorted new science discoveries and such. They're mainly articles/essays so usually not long reads. Present at the Creation: The Story of CERN and the Large Hadron Collider is also interesting and about something more recent. For more technology type stuff we have: dot.bomb- about the internet getting big around 1999 Who Says Elephants Can't Dance?- this is more about IBM/the computer industry than discovery, but I'd say it's history as IBM is so big in technology. Bursts- I really don't know how to describe this one. It's about how digital everything is helping research and finding how human behavior follows predictable laws. Go To- about the software revolution- 9 replies
