  1. We used Hooked on Phonics for our now first grader to learn to read with. (She is reading on a 3rd grade level now.) When do you normally start some sort of formal grammar? I guess I was so concerned about reading that I forgot about grammar...
  2. One of our afternoon favorites is to freeze lemonade (either fresh made or the Country Time kind) in our ice cream freezer. It is just like the soft frozen lemonade at the beach. Just make sure you don't get the sugar free kind or it will freeze into a solid block. Great treat for playing outside in the afternoon.
  3. We are using Horizons 1 this year with our first grader. I like the program over all. She is really good at math and has enjoyed the full color workbooks. But on the downside, I find the teacher's manual not very parent friendly. It seems like it is more written for someone who has gone to school to teach. (My sister is an elementary school teacher so I call her when I have an issue.)
  4. My husband and I are going to the midnight showing because it is easier to get someone to stay at our house overnight, after we put the kids to bed, than it is to pay a babysitter during the day. And we have been going to the midnight showing of Harry Potters since we started dating, so it is our tradition.
  5. Has anyone used something other than Story of the World for history in early elementary?
  6. Thanks for posting this. I have been looking forward to an alternative to the Story of the World, with a more Christian perspective. We are definitely going to try this!
  7. Thanks for the info. I am planning on using my own LA too. About how long does is take to complete a day of school for you guys?
  8. Yes, as a minister in a small town the tie is still required attire! : ) He is not a fan of wearing it in the 100 degree heat.
  9. We are planning on using WP Animals and their worlds with our first grader this year. I was wondering if anyone has used this with a preschooler. We have a 4 year old that really wants to do school too, but I don't want to overwhelm her. Also since this is a science based core, do we need to do an extra science? Or should we add some sort of history? Thanks for any insight.
  10. I have heard that the institute in basic life principles has some good character building books for kids of all ages. I would look there.
