  1. Thanks for the input! I think I will check out the text from our library. (It will take a while since we have to get it from interlibrary loan, probably from another state!) Try that for a couple of weeks and then get the text if it works for me.
  2. Any ideas for learning subtraction facts other than flash cards and xtramath.com? Or any good living math books about subtraction? Dd is wanting to do multiplication, but isn't to where she has memorized the subtraction facts yet. I don't know how to get her past the subtraction road block. and drill, drill drill is making us both crazy. Thanks for any ideas!
  3. So what is the "email of doom"? We just use the free brain pop app. And try not to think about all the videos they can't watch because they aren't free.
  4. Don't know if this helps, but when I clicked on it there wasn't any extra space blank space. Hope you figure it out.
  5. We are using orange right now even with our 2nd grader. The first few lessons she breezed through, but they were still fun. I would start there. And I would also second letting her choose which pages she wants to do. We just tear out several and let her pick a couple to do a day.
  6. I am once again lookin at Writing With Ease. But I can't quite decide whether to get the book or the workbooks. Does anyone just use the text? Is it alot of work? I have looked at the samples but I can't tell if it continues to gives you the quote for narration and copy work for all the lessons, or just the first few as a sample. Also, I'll be starting it with a second grader. Should I start level one or level two? Thanks!
  7. Which page numbers are you missing? I can pm you the info.
  8. Our day went really well! We are doing Sonlight core B and p 4/5. It actually went smoother with two than I thought. And it was so hot today no one complained about being inside. I did remember several things that I needed to pick up, but I got them tonight so I am hoping tomorrow will go as well as today.
  9. I just found out that we are going to be travelling almost all of August so we are found to start school tomorrow. (plus it is over 100 degrees outside here so I have to have something to do with these kids! :001_smile:) I am also hoping it will help me get past the nerves over the new curriculum. I don't want to be worried about school and teaching 2 instead of 1 while we are on vacation later this summer. Anyone else starting back so soon?
  10. Thanks! I will definitely check out this book! Sounds like a great resource!
  11. I used Saxon in 5th grade through 12th grade and while I wouldn't necessarily call it "fun" (I am not a mathy person!) I do feel like I got a very solid math education. We used Saxon k with our oldest, and decided to switch to horizons math in 1st grade. It was a nightmare! Horizons worksheets were so distracting to her that all of a sudden math was taking me 1 1/2 hours. So back to Saxon we went. We love the spiral approach. (I don't worry that she is forgetting something.) And the incremental approach works for us. If she is struggling with something then we can take things slow and if she gets it really quickly then I skip to the next lesson. We don't do the meeting book in the early years. And I don't feel tied to the script. But for the days that I am not in the mood to do math I know I can read the script and know that I haven't shortchanged her. I also don't do the back of the worksheets, and sometimes we do the answers orally if we have been doing a lot of writing that day. One last thing, at least the early years are set up to do 3-4 lessons a week. So on Fridays we do Fred Fridays. (life of Fred and a few miquon worksheets.) That keeps things changed up a bit. But really I think I am the one with the problem of doing the same thing everyday. :)
  12. We inherited some snap circuits that my oldest dd (7) really loves playing with. I was wondering if there are any free resources using them for science? It seems like I remember reading a thread about them, but a search didn't turn up the one I was looking for. Thanks!
  13. Yes, sonlight's p 4/5 would be really good for you guys. Great books that the whole family would love but a gentle introduction to other school stuff. and if the school stuff becomes overwhelming you can always just read the books. We are actually using p 4/5 for kindergarten but it also makes a great preschool. Sounds like it would be a good fit for your family.
  14. A teacher friend of my recently won a fetal pig at a conference and checked it in her checked bag. She didn't have any issues. I hope that helps.
  15. We use this for our first grader who is reading well on her own. It is independent reading with follow up questions. They also have books for older students. I am pleased with it, we are doing the NT survey one.
  16. My recommendation to new homeschoolers is that you don't have to start everything all at the same time. Find your math, reading and writing curriculum first. You can always do history and science from library books for a while until you work the other things out. And some of their website have samples or placement tests, that is a great place to start.
  17. We spend about $300 this year. That is for a 2nd grader and K. We use Sonlight and I buy all of our stuff used. (eBay, and the for sale forum here, and Amazon.) It would be alot less if our library were any good. :)
  18. I have a rising 2nd grader. She has done a little writing, but I want to use an actual writing curriculum for her. She tends to be intimidated of writing. She is a perfectionist and is smart enough to think that everything should come easy. She HATES getting things wrong. So I am also trying to decide if I should start her at level one, or two? If I do with Writing with Ease do I need to get the Instructors manual or just the workbook? Thanks for any help!
  19. You might want to look for magazines too. I think of Highlights, national geographies for kids, etc. They aren't chapter books, but they might keep your dc reading.
  20. Yes, you can do it. And some time it is easier to do separate cores than trying to tweak something to make it fit. By the time your 5 year old is into the more serious cores (B or C) your older child will be old enough to be mostly independent. Don't be discouraged, do what works for your family.
  21. From what I understand, it does not teach the spelling rules, it just gradually covers more spelling patterns. Some kids don't need the spelling rules, and become natural spellers by seeing the patterns in the words. We used part of vol. 1 last year and plan to do it again next year. But I would be interested in knowing if there is a resource that would go along with SS that would just teach the rules if we needed them.
  22. We are doing Sonlight core b for our history this year and I am considering getting History Pockets ancient civilizations grade 1-3 to do with my 2nd grader. (she is not good at cutting, and could use some consistent practice. ) just wondering if they are worth the price and what do you actually do with them. And if any one has used them with Sonlight Intro to world history, or if that would be redundant. Thanks.
  23. We do what ever is convenient at the time. My dh works on Sundays so we normally take Monday off to be with him. When he works on Saturday we will do school. I find, even with four kids, it is easier to do school with him at work. The kids can't focus when he is home, they just want to play.
