  1. I do MUS Delta/Singapore 3a for my son and I did BJU/Singapore for my dd, Singapore being our basal curriculum. She (dd-4th) is working her way through Lial's BCM ( we just started a few weeks ago) and then she will go into NEM1 ( I do not plan on supplementing then). I just use my basal curriculum to introduce topics and then I use the other to "supplement" it. This is much easier done with BJU than with MUS. I tend to flow between the MUS & Singapore than stick to definitive topics. We do math for 45 minutes daily. My ker is doing Singapore 1B and BJU 1. I like the variety.
  2. These books are not something my dd likes at all , like you said "corny" but it's a perfect fit for my 8yod boy:huh:. My library does not carry them either. I did order some from Rainbow Resource at 7.25 each. You could ask your children's librarian to purchase them for the library. About the Barns and Nobel thing, not unethical :001_smile:
  3. I am so happy my son will finally stat reading some "boring history books" (as he calls it), and actually enjoy it.
  4. We normally start in January, I divide the pages by how many schooling days we have before the test. This year they had 2 pages a day. They are quick to do, I did however keep a track of what they did not do well on. I taped a 3 x 5 index card on the inside cover and looking at my son's now, I have written on his 3x5 index card: probability, maps, multi- digit subtraction..etc. I will go over these a couple of days before the test as a quick re-fresher. Happy Testing!
  5. My dd would read ANYTHING I assigned her she spoiled me . My ds on the other hand still wants pictures, loves color and humor, going into 3rd. I found TOG had one of these scheduled " I Wouldn't Want To..." so I asked him what he thought of it, he LOVED it. I checked the website and there is a whole series, I am so excited to get more. Just an FYI.
  6. Josie, I have not done any of their online classes, I believe they are fairly new.
  7. Yes, it looks like it may have come out in Feb. or so 2008. Here is the link Math Without Borders
  8. I found a Companion CD for only $59 that goes over every section of the Alg. 1 book, I just ordered it but, it looks like it would be a great way to implement it if your looking for a stellar math program. Just an FYI Ü
  9. about math for my dd. She is in 4th (age wise) but we are doing a quick review of Lials BCM for a re-fresher to go into Singapore NEM (I am almost done doing the book myself, Thanks Myrtle I actually like math!) After doing some researching it seems to me that in 7th grade mainly focuses are: Properties, Order of Operations Exponents, squares, roots Fractions Decimals Percents Proportions Expressions and Equations - Simplifying and Solving Expressions and Equations - Writing Graphing Shapes, Objects, Angles, Similarity, Congruence Area, Volume, Perimeter, Distance In preparation for pre-algebra (what this really is) /Alg. 1 With that said, in 4th is when the beginning of mastery is needed for Multiplication & Division and then in 5th and 6th you have larger numbers with teaching of the inverse relationship between Multiplication and Division. It may be more helpful to use a text as review of those chapters only, even using BCM may help.
  10. Wow , thats actually really sad. I also run a large co -op there are 4 of us "leaders". I have had to ask 2 families to leave in 4 years because of this, mainly because of hitting. We have a discipline policy the parents need to sign. We have "banned" words like stupid, crap, shut-up and several others. I am very quick to address bad behavior. I hold a large "mandatory meeting" in August on what we will, and will not allow. Then on the first day of co-op, myself and the other leaders go around to each class and go over the rules, again. The discipline policy has made it very easy for us to address issues and reinforce rules.
  11. Yes, it's called Webster's Academy for Excellence in Writing.
  12. Latin, Spanish and Sign Language. I was raised in a bi-lingual home Spanish/English plus my older sister is deaf so I learned sign language too! I find Latin very easy to teach because of my roots in Spanish. I teach the kids songs using Sign Language and I speak to them in Spanish a lot. They study Latin separately and every night someone takes a turn saying a Latin prayer. It works well!
  13. "Leading Little Ones to God" with "The Jesus Storybook Bible" for prek-2nd Then I moved into "Young Peacemakers" this year (I love it!), you have to order separately the comic books that dovetail with it. We do the lesson and then the kids read the comic books over and over. They are really well done. I am using it with my older 2 although my younger one is getting a lot from it. Lastly I plan on moving through the entire series of "Here in Is Love" that will probably take about 3 years.
  14. Herein is Love set and I am very happy with the book as well as the teachers guide and discussion questions.
  15. In the theme based lessons there are a few "fun" things that may not be introduced in the SWICC until later or not at all in some cases. You could pull those lessons and use them separate from the others in the Medieval lessons. Basically, you would use the SWICC as your base then add in the theme based lessons or models you like. If they offer models in the Medieval lessons, you can still use them but ask for the requirements from the SWICC. I would look at the TOC. You could start with the ML until you reach the Unit you are on in the SWICC. Then pop the lessons from the unit into you SWICC schedule. That would give you a full year of writing.
  16. Even though the Unit itself is on back order, I would call and ak them to give you access to the list posted for the books, that way you can go ahead look at the book list.
  17. It's the "beginning of the "new grade" for paperwork sake. I use TOG so I try to get in as much of 2 Units before Christmas. I work it like this: Aug. (4 weeks) Sept. (4 weeks) Oct.(1 week, first Unit is complete) Oct. (2nd week , OFF field trip, art & prepare Unit 2) Oct. (week 3+4 Start Unit 2) Nov. (3 weeks, Thanksgiving week OFF, art only) Dec. (first 2 weeks on, second 2 weeks OFF, art week 2 only) Jan. (first 2 weeks, Unit 2 done. last 2 weeks start Unit 3) Feb. (3 weeks, take PS Feb. Vacation off -art only, field trip, get Unit 4 ready) Mar. (4 weeks Unit 3 done) April ( 4 weeks start Unit 4) May (4 weeks) June ( 1 week , Unit 4 done) June (weeks 2+3 OFF, beach, art) June (week 4 science, math, summer book list & report) July (weeks 1- 4 Science, math, summer book list & report) On my weeks off we have been focusing on 1 or 2 Artists and using the Famous Artists books. We will most likely continue with it like that, we will fit in about 8-10 artists. I do the " block scheduling" for science. My kids do participate in a co-op that is going through the Apologia books.
  18. My ds plays guitar from 7:30-8:00am and my dd plays piano from 7:30-8:30am. Mind you, they are up at 6:30 and ALL chores and breakfast is finished at 7:30am. This works well because it gives me 1/2 hour with my 5 yod for reading time. Then she gets a break while, I am doing math with my son 8-8:30am and my oldest is still playing piano until 8:30am. Then I work with mu oldest on math and I rotate through to my 5 yod for another 1/2 session and she is done for the day. She works on crafts I have set up for her while I go between my other two.
  19. You would do the SWI B Continuation Course then the SWI C CC. Then you could do the High School Essay Writing Intensive, Advanced Communication Series, SAT Prompts or slide in a 1/2 year of Classical Poetry (thats what I did with my HS students last year.)
  20. Math: Lial BCM and LOF Fractions & Percents we will do this until she gets down a little more to go into NEM 1 English: Shurely 5, SWR (should complete it this year) , IEW Ancient History, Wordly Wise & Maps and Charts Geography & History: TOG Year 1 Science: Zoology 3 (at co-op) join in on BJU 3 with the other kiddos at home Languages: LC 1 and Elementary Spanish 5-6 Art: Famous Artists & Draw Today as well as Ancient History Art at co-op Music: Themes to Remember & Outside Piano Lessons (5th year) Recreational: Div. 1 Soccer, swimming team, winter Basketball and outdoor play Bible: Herein is Love Genesis
  21. Holly, I picked my set up on Amazon. I was lucky to find the text, solutions manual and DVT sold as a set for $27. It was listed as only the text, then when I clicked on "more info" it said it included the DVT's and solutions manual. Good Luck!
  22. this up to look at, I got the 7th edition, DVT's and solutions manual for $27.00. It's cheap enough to look at :)
  23. Cross post from K-8......... I love reading your math threads. It is a real blessing to have "Mathy" people on this board. I feel like I'm at a Super Wal-Mart when I come here. It looks as though math is a really tough subject to get a handle on, at least for me. I was wondering if you had the time is you could list a curriculum recommendations in [1]Non-Math (Child must have DVD's at upper levels) [2]Okay until Alg.(Child could handle if DVDs or possible well laid out solutions manuals are available) [3]Pretty Confident (I can handle rigorous, possible outsource with a tutor or hand over to Dad if help needed) I'll start only to show what I mean, please by no means should anyone follow my lead I am one of those that sputters out at Alg. [1],[2] or [3] 1-6 Pick an Elementary curriculum and stick with it (Ones I have used Bob Jones, Singapore, MUS) [1] 7th Teaching Textbooks or Chalkdust (Uses Larson text) 8th Pre-Algebra Video Text all the Way through 9th 10th 11th 12th [2] 7th Lial Basic College Math, Chalkdust or Video Text 8th Dolciani Structure & Method 1 9th Geometry (no clue what to use) 10th Dolciani Structure & Mehod 1 11th Pre- Calc ((no clue what to use) 12th [3] I can't even Imagine........
  24. Opps , sorry my bad. I'll crosspost it over there. Thanks!
