  1. As we head into a new school year, I'd like to put together a list of favorite meals that you can get on the table in maybe an hour.  You know, when you walk in the door and everyone's starved and ready for supper?  We'll have soccer every night this year, and I'm working more, so I'm looking for new ideas for a fast dinner.  Crockpot dinners are also okay.  Just need some help with new options.  Thanks!

  2. I'm thinking of making some sugar cookies frosted with royal icing, you know the ones that look professional and shiny.  What I'm wondering is--can you freeze them already iced?  Do they maintain well through defrosting?  I was thinking of making them up ahead for my son's wedding.   Thanks.

  3. Crafts.  Dd even had a craft party this time of year for her friends last year.  They decorated small notebooks, made key ornaments (snowmen), felt flower hair clips and felt ornaments.  Pinterest has thousands of ideas.  Let your dd pick some and then grab supplies.  Dd had picked a jewelry idea, but nixed it when she saw how much it would run.

Ice skating, roller skating, bowling.   The younger girls are enjoying making a papermache animal in my art class.  We're going to be painting them next.  Think 7" or so.   That's a cheap project, but something they don't get to do at home.

  4. Did you get actual quotes from them?  If so, call and say you'd like the job done!  My dh's business has had more than enough work lately, and it's been hard to get back to people due to training new techs, trying to get other jobs done, etc.  Usually tho, we expect the customer to let us know they want the work done after we've given them a quote.  Hopefully, we'll have time to call back after quoting in the future!

  5. One of the most bizarrely delicious comfort foods I make came from a recipe my piano teacher shared. I came to her home for a lesson and could barely make it through, the house smelled SO amazing.

    Recipe? Essentially a pork hotpot.

    1 lb pork roast

1 cup beans, soaked (I've used navy beans and black beans to great effect)

    1 lrg can Sauerkraut

Toss in crockpot, cook for hours, enjoy.

So stinking good. Some recipes add some white whine, sautéed onion, pepper, etc, but even just made as is it is scrumptious and completely inexplicable. My family doesn't even really like kraut or pork, but MAN was this worth the skepticism I had upon making it the first time.

this reminds me of the pork roast cooked with pinto beans ( and a few spices) and then shredded and served on tacos.

  6. Pork chops browned and then baked on top of stuffing- homemade or boxed.  Or soaked a bit in a milk/egg mix and then coated with corn flake crumbs/parmesan cheese/herbs.

    Or cubed for a stew:

1 lb lean pork, in 1/2" cubes- brown in a tsp oil

    14 oz chicken broth

    1 TBSP tomato paste

1/2 tsp each: garlic pwdr, thyme

    1/4 tsp pepper

    2 c sliced carrots

    2 c cubed potatoes

    1 c water

10 oz pkg peas with onions

Brown the meat, and add the broth, tomato paste, spices.  Bring to a boil and simmer, covered, 40 minutes.

Add carrots and potatoes, water, and cook- covered 20-30 minutes.  Add peas and cook another 10 minutes.

Or cut up for beef and pork chow mein.

    Turkey tetrazzini.

Italian sausage, potato and kale soup.

Italian sausages on buns.  Cook them in a sauce of 14 oz. catsup with instant coffee (= to one strong cup) and a few dashes of worcestershire sauce.

    Ham and scalloped potatoes.

    Ham and Potato Bake

    3 tsp butter

    1/2 c chopped onion

    1/2 c sliced celery

    3 tbsp flour

1 tsp salt and pepper to taste

    1/2 tsp dry mustard

    1 1/2 c milk

3/4 c shredded cheddar cheese, divided

    4 c frozen french fries

    1 1/2 c cubed cooked ham

Saute the onion and celery.  Blend in flour and seasonings.  Add milk, stirring and cooking, til thickened.

Stir in 1/2 c cheese til melted.

Layer potatoes and ham in a greased shallow 2 qt dish.  Pour sauce over it and bake, covered at 400*

for 30 minutes.  Uncover and top with remaining cheese.  Bake until melted.

  7. We usually go to my sister's, but she said her kids had other plans so she wasn't cooking.  Dh was hep to go to Old Country Buffet.  But, I decided sil (who lives in an assisted living facility) should be able to get together with her kids, grands, and great-grands, so they're all coming to our house and I'm cooking for 16.  Frankly, my mind has been more on a get together I'm planning for a dozen friends in a couple weeks.  ;)

We are working on some deeper cleaning, as we'll have to set up the table in the garage and need to be able to get through the first garage.  Nothing a good trip to the Goodwill can't take care of. lol  Everything got shoved in there during this spring's basement remodel and we're getting close to having put things back.

Menu doesn't vary much for Thanksgiving:  turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls (I plan to make those Tuesday).  My mom is donating two big pumpkin pies even tho they're headed elsewhere, bless her!  I may add either a layered salad or a roasted potato/sweet potato/beet dish.  We'll see.

Family should all be in town Wednesday to Saturday, so it's planning the extra meals that need more thought.

  8. I'm glad I'm on the last child.  My need to buy books all the time has gone down. :crying:   I need to get cooking again.  When I do cook, it's from scratch, but with me working again and dd's sports schedul, we've gotten into eating out again.  I need to do some freezer meals and get planning meals again.

I also need to sell the books we're not using/going to use this last round.

I want to find TIME, to do some crafty things.  Entertaining enough for me when I have the stuff downstairs.  :p

I used to use the checkbook for all my spending and not really carry cash.  But a couple years ago I started using cash for all but the regular monthly bills.  I'd sock some of the cash away, and I found, surprisingly, that I was saving a lot of it, which came in handy for unexpected medical bills and such.  Carrying cash actually works better for me!

Also, an out of state phone company called my sil and cut her landline costs by half.  Will see if they can do my area.
