  1. Now that my kids are all adults, I want to cut back big time on gifts.  Would love to do just one or two each besides the stockings, which they really look forward to.  They're really hard to buy for now anyway! And with just a 2 yr old gs, not looking to buy him stuff for their house either.

We'll have to switch to more game playing, I guess, like we do at my big family's gathering.  And now I'll probably have to fix a big dinner, too, tho maybe I can get away with appetizers again like last year, when the kids didn't come til 4 or so, after gs had his nap.  Also, I'll be making the big dinner for 20 the weekend after Christmas.  Once for the week should do, I think! 😉

How about you?  Things changing at your house, too?

  2. Turkey breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, jellied cranberry sauce, homemade rolls, green bean casserole and scalloped corn/broccoli casserole.  The broccoli is the new bit, so not sure who will join me on that. The preschool was selling pies, so I have a strawberry rhubarb pie and a blueberry pie to pick up Saturday.  Better have my mom be the hero and have a banana cream pie ready for them to stop by and enjoy.  lol

I'll make leftovers for my mom and dad, as they don't want to come over or care if I bring dinner there on Tday.  Not sure if ds and family will be coming or not, or if other ds plans to stay home or go to my sister's house that day.  We're not big plan ahead people either.

Christmas is moving to my house from my folks this year. My sister's been making lasagna for 20 the last couple years.  My kids are all asking if we can go back to having a real Christmas dinner this year.  😨  I was getting used  to easy.! lol

One year my mother-in-law gave me pan scrapers from Pampered Chef. I'm not sure what they're actually called, but they are really hard plastic and great at scraping gunk off pans without scratching them up. Each corner is different so they can get right into the edges of every dish I own. I rolled my eyes when I opened them and they sat in the package a while, but I use them nearly daily.

My son asked for some specifically when he got married.  That and wooden spoons.  🙂

  4. I've thought about making those fabric carriers for taking 9x13 dishes to potlucks or such.  A couple matching hot pads might be cute.

One year I found embroidered dish towels with a family dessert type theme at a craft show, and gave everyone one of those and matching oven mitts.  Knowing that they were part of a 'set' that the family had.

My mom quilts, and has made table runners or place mats for all of us.

True...I'm glad I am not today who or how I was at 22. What I do not understand is pride so strong that one would rather foot the entire bill for a trip rather than pay a lesser amount simply because it is requested.

When we offered allowance when the boys were young, the younger one wanted the same as his older brother or not at all.  lol  BTDT

  6. Well here, there's a parade and a car show along with some other activities into early afternoon.  Dh wants to have another neighborhood party (it's been YEARS!); I'm thinking an ice cream sundae party late afternoon would be a good time to sit down/get to know neighbors and share some ice cream, before every heads out to the fireworks.  Everyone could bring a topping while we get the bucket of ice cream.  Everyone needs to bring their own chairs, too.  We had these parties years back, and we and our co-hosts, one of our neighbors, walk around the neighborhood hand delivering invites.

    Helicrysum italicum....

Helichrysum's is an effective antibacterial against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, it has some anti fungal properties, and it has been the best wrinkle, age spot, and scar oil I've tried. If you wanted an oil to work on anti-aging stuff in your skin, this is what I recommend.

If you want to read more, and get a sense of pricing I'd point you to Mountain Rose Herbs or Eden's Garden.

So you dilute it with a carrier oil and use daily?  weekly?  This is one of my newest oils.  Thanks!

I think it depends.  A lot of them are award winners because they do take something scary and bring it down to a kid's level of maturity and understanding.  But I don't think it's a new trend.  I think it's a difference between parent eyes and child eyes. 🙂  I remember reading Oliver Button Is A Sissy and Everybody Knows That, loving them, and not considering the story beyond the surface until I was much older.  But even serials like Babysitter's Club and Sweet Valley tackled serious issues, and those were considered "bubblegum" books.

I do think homeschool book lists have a tendency to go for the heavy.  I pick and choose from Sonlight's lists for my own kid.  When I saw The Hundred Dresses, I decided to wait on that one until early middle school *because* I wanted to dive deeper in and I thought it would cause feelings of hopelessness in a 2nd grader.

The Hundred Dresses was one of the first books I read to the boys when we were schooling, and they really enjoyed it.

Most of you have probably never heard of our Canadian musicians. I have so many memories of Kim Mitchell, "Patio Lanterns" and "Go for a Soda,"  or Bryan Adams, "Summer of '69."  I think Trooper, "Boys in the Bright White Sports Car" was the first album I purchased with my own money.

Celine Dion was the first musician I bought an album in French. She was a teenager and it was her first album.

My sister and I listened to the Scottish band, Bay City Rollers, "Saturday Night" a million times.

Just haven't heard of Kim Mitchell.  Time to youtube.

The song Jackie Blue takes me back to doing laps in the high school swimming pool.  Every time.

  10. If you could get a bank account with only you as the signer, and the account reads as Mom XXXXX c/o your name, that would be a big help.  You can have ss or other income going directly into the account.  You might need to go visit and literally go through the bills and get them put on auto withdrawal, but that would make life easier.  The hard part would be getting cash to her regularly.  Would she be okay with a prepaid charge card or bank card for a separate account that you could transfer money into regularly?

  11. My very elderly dad broke his leg, had surgery and was transferred to a nursing home for rehab.  Now he's been transferred to another one.  It's time to start getting on his leg again.  But-- all the changes and/or some meds that doctors have decided he will have despite my mom arguing against them, have left dad very confused and sometimes a bit belligerent.  Has anyone dealt with this?  We're trying to figure out what options are if he can't focus enough to do the needed therapies, or if the confusion doesn't clear and becomes a permanent thing.  Scary times.  Looking for advise from those who have btdt.  thanks.
