  1. I don't think its a fair assumption to think people are trying to make it work because they're dependant somehow... I think thats probably way off the mark in many (most?) cases.
  2. Someday, when I get my iPad mini, this is exactly what I'm going to do, too...
  3. I just have a 5x8 3-ring notebook that I use.
  4. I almost wonder if he doesn't have test anxiety so much as it's just harder to read test questions because they're too short to be able to pull context clues... (DS has dyslexia and while his comprehension is pretty high with larger passages, he tends to do poorly on typical tests because he doesn't have enough text to be able to make some mistakes) Does the GED exam allow modifications like reading the test to them?
  5. Actually, and this is important, most longer-term affairs DON'T seem to be premeditated. They're the classic "I don't know how it happened…" excuse because usually the cheat didn't realize it was happening. Most of us forget how relationships begin. Generally speaking, they were "just friends" who became more intimate and involved. And pretty soon a serious relationship has developed. Everyone likes to have this idea that the cheat was out looking, but most of the time that's simply not true! This is why so many therapists and counselors recommend not having close friendships with the opposite sex. Marriage doesn't suddenly put a force field around the partners. They have to make a conscious effort to set boundaries of what is and what isn't appropriate. And those boundaries should be something far more innocent than "I won't have sex with other people." It's the sharing and intimacy of a close friendship that creates the affair. I mean, that's dating, after all. By the time the cheat can rationalize actual sex, the relationship is usually well-established...
  6. Yep. From what I have observed, that's all most affairs ever were; "just friends" that grew into more...
  7. Something I've noticed is that it seems like the affair is usually between the cheat and a friend. They start out as perfectly legitimate friends (or coworkers) and then start sharing and becoming close. Pretty soon the new "friend" is looking better than the boring, old spouse. And who doesn't like a new relationship? It's exciting! And fun. And makes us feel good.
  8. Statistics aren't particularly supportive of a cheat who marries their new flame. Basically all they've done is bailed when their marriage got stale/tough/boring/etc. They've created a serial environment. I can't remember for sure off the top of my head but IIRC it's something like 80% don't make it more than three years... It must be my season of life, or something. I've seen a lot of infidelity in my friends and family in the last seven or eight years or so. I know of two that are better than they were before. (Or so it seems, of course) A couple I'm not sure about... And four that didn't make it.
  9. I would venture to guess the vast majority of people who've been betrayed by their partner once said they couldn't imagine their spouse cheating, either...
  10. *Completely* do-able. Mostly it's things like coffee filters or ph strips or rubberbands.
  11. The CD has test/quiz masters and answers, as well as lab forms/answers. It also has extension activities on it. Researching an inventor who has something to do with this week's topics, or math activities, as an example.
  12. Possibly. There are several different covers out there that all have the same CD inside… (it's very annoying) The thing to remember is not so much jiving the publication dates, but making sure you get the middle school resources CD for the middle school text OR the high school resources CD for the high school text. Middle school is "Holt Science and Technology." High school is "Holt Science Spectrum" Middle school will be for 6-8th. High school will be for 8th-9th.
  13. Anyone who has a gas range in the country is on propane, rather than NG… For that matter, in 9 of my dozen homes over the years, that's all I've had; propane. If the only thing you have on your tank is a range, you'll go through very little propane. You might even get away with using small, portable bottles if you want to be able to take them in for a refill. Otherwise, you'll need to rent a larger tank from the local propane supply co. (the nearest co-op, if they aren't your supplier, will be able to tell you who is)
  14. Does anyone know? I'm looking at getting a DIVE CD for Buck's Algebra 2 We only have one CD Rom drive in the house, though it is a portable one that hooks into any machine via USB. But it would make my world so much easier if I could rip the info off the disk, then transfer it to an iPod, or the other machines...
  15. In my area, gifted programs don't even exist. Kids might be tested, but after that it's irrelevant because it just goes into their file as a label. So, that, coupled with the fact that my kid is definitely 2E (dyslexic and possibly ADD), homeschooling just solves a whole host of issues. Personally, I'm a K-8 classroom teacher. But I always tell people that really, the only thing being a teacher has done for me so far as homeschooling goes, is give me the confidence to know that I can do this. Homeschooling is more akin to parenting than it is teaching. Have you figured out how to parent this kid yet? If so, you can probably manage homeschooling, too. :)
  16. Here on the rural plains, I live in a very similar "land." What's ironic is that "government schools suck" until we're talking about our schools. OUR schools, of course, are the exception to the rule. :001_rolleyes: "Why aren't both of your kids in school?!" (And no one ever remembers that the kid that IS in school doesn't even live in their state. lol We opt her across state lines, into the district. You mean you think the district needs BOTH of my kids??)
  17. How funny. This is the exact, same reason my husband went to high school. Before our state opened the school districts, he would have had to drive 50 miles, one way, to the only high school in the district. Or, he could have paid out of district tuition to one that was only 30 miles away, but tuition was HIGHER than it was at boarding school. His dad was a cowhand and his mom a SAHM; definitely not an "elite" image of boarding school...
  18. I graduated in '92. Most high schoolers weren't using computers for research yet. And I discovered a long time ago that it's not uncommon for teachers to not check the validity of a cited source. Not that I know of anyone who would fudge on such a thing. ;)
  19. Honestly, I can't figure out what the previous posters are talking about. I'm a k-8 classroom teacher and I didn't find any glaring issues with the Holt texts (part of why I'm hoping someone can link us to something a bit more current than other companies' texts from 1996.) Obviously people will have different preferences, but I'm not seeing something that's actually problematic. Personally, that's why I liked Holt. I had pulled my then-7th grader out of public school. Being a school text, Holt was a familiar lay-out, logically-presented, plenty of support materials and extension activities, well illustrated with a lot of good diagrams… Seriously, I can see why it's so popular with schools as well as homeschoolers.
  20. Mine too. It's amazing what you can accomplish in a last minute cram-session or an over-night before it's due. The only drawn-out project that I actually put genuine work in to was our senior thesis in English and that's only because our teacher built work time into our class period.
  21. Having used Holt for the previous three years (this year we're on to Spectrum), can you guys link us to something a bit more current? The above link only uses texts published in the 90s…and none of the ones being discussed are even there.
  22. My husband went to boarding school for high school. It most assuredly was NOT a free-for-all. lol They had dorm parents as well as floor supervisors. They had JOBS, which were staffed by church members and school graduates. And they were 7 miles from a town of 400. They had far less unsupervised time than I did with a more typical high school life. Most graduates I've known over the years (and I've known quite a few, given the fact that it was quite small and fostered a kind of family-connection that former students still maintain) look back on their boarding school years with great fondness...
  23. Are you after the middle school version or the high school? I ask because I have both. ;) For the middle school version I have the teacher's manual and the Chapter Resources CD. For high school I have the student text and Chapter Resources CD.
  24. And I got just a text and CD used on ebay. No, you don't have to buy the kit, but it's available used, too.
