Parents not following thru with volunteering requirement
Sarah Bailey replied to jsh626's topic in The Chat Board
I wish I had an idea, I know when I was running my own 4-H I only had one mom I could count on the other parents were content to sit back, some would help but for the most part most were not comitted. I made the decision after talking with my children to disband our group, we took last year off and I've found us another group to get involved in this year which seems to be good and while I'll help out the entire leadership and running won't fall on my shoulders. I also run the Explorer unit for our AHG troop and it's hard to get parents to contact me with info - so I send home a letter and I leave it in their laps. Other than that I have no tried and true ways to get others to help out :( -

Calling all Mystery of History users Midwest Convention
Sarah Bailey replied to Sarah Bailey's topic in The Chat Board
Just looking to fill these last few slots - just a few more days. -
I've had drs prescribe Zofran for me for migraines or when I've been vomiting for other reasons and I've since learned some forms contain aspartame - couldn't figure out why I was getting migraines after taking it, just an FYI if you're sensitive to artificial sweeteners.

I have tried many, including SparkPeople but I much prefer MyFitnessPal - you can follow me if you'd like here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/SJBailey the myplate doesn't really consider how people should eat - if I ate the way it's recommended by the government I wouldn't be so close to getting off my diabetic medicaton :D

Can You Rec. Your In-Home Workout Machine?
Sarah Bailey replied to Alicia64's topic in The Chat Board
I've tried the stationary bikes, ellipticals, treadmills and they only became an extra laundry hamper :( and took up to much room in our tiny house. Now my exercise machine is my Wii Fit Plus as well as my DVD player that I play Leslie Sansone walk at home DVD and the ShapelyGirl Debra Mazda DVD's. I've already lost about 10 pounds in about 4 weeks and I feel so good, and no lost space. I do have some small hand weights but nothing fancy. -
How can I help my kid stop sucking her thumb?
Sarah Bailey replied to El...'s topic in The Chat Board
Very interesting reading this thread. I have an 8 and a 6 1/2 year old who both still suck their thumbs and show no signs of stopping. They won't do it in public, so their friends don't know they do it so it's only at home but still. I sucked mine till like 5th grade and ended up with an orthodontic appliance that everytime I put my thumb in my mouth it would poke me, I found a way around it but eventually I did stop. -
Photo evidence of how a small house works for you?
Sarah Bailey replied to xixstar's topic in The Chat Board
When I married my husband his 624 sq. ft home seemed big, then we started adding children - now we don't have a bedroom. Our son has one room and the girls another - the house is tiny, I'd take 700 or even 800 if it'd give us one more bathroom, even a half bath and an extra bedroom. :D -

need ideas to help DS through this period (with back brace)
Sarah Bailey replied to ktgrok's topic in The Chat Board
No suggestions but I completely understand - my daughter has been in a back brace for 2 years - I'm assuming your DS has scoliosis? This is my DD's 4th brace, it's very hard to get her to wear the 23 hours a day. -
I will be doing a mixture of Wii Fit Plus and Leslie Sanson's mile working up to the full 5 miles I also use MyFitnessPal if anyone wants to follow along with me :D

Would love to fill these slots - if you know of anyone and can pass along the info that would be great too :D -
My husband who had been having heart palapitations (sp?) was told by his doctor his Vit. D was low, after only a couple weeks on a supplement he hasn't had hardly any and has had more energy. His heart dr just chalked it up to his being a heart patient without looking into it more. As for a mother's instinct I kept pushing for testing on my oldest for severe belly pain - and the last thing I had them test for, scoliosis, was what she had but the dr still maintained that it couldn't have caused the belly pain but once we began treatment her belly pain disappeared. Yep, there is a lot to be said for mother's instinct.

One tool I really like is using MyFitnessPal - it can be accessed on the PC, app, etc and allows you to track what you eat all day, including water, exercise, etc - it breaks down all the calories, carbs, etc and while most people use it to lose weight it could be a good tool for her to see where her nutrients are and how to make better choices - plus she can add friends to cheer her on when she makes a good choice.

I've been Type 2 for several years and before that I was gest. diabetic. I keep my carbs under 45 for each meal and I try to keep it under 25 for snacks. I'm also very overweight and trying to lose weight - it's only been this year that I've started to really watch with the aim to get off my metformin - I absolutely hate taking meds. My hubby is also type 2. I was taking our now 11 year old to an endo for her hyper insulin but the appts became more about why didn't I want to do something to stop her cycles? and why are you feeding her this or that? I cannot have fruit, except maybe a slice or two of apples as it causes a significant rise in BS. Now for my oldest DD I try to get her on the Wii doing Wii Fit (exercise helps to balance out blood sugar levels). I know someone mentioned a bed time snack - however for me, that doesn't matter I can eat a bed time snack at 9, take my metformin and still wake with high fastings but all my other testings are fine and even low through the rest of the day. I'd get her in to a holistic dietician (regular ones tend to lean towards eating aspartame and Splenda instead of Stevia, or still allowing for a lot of carbs even for a pre-diabetic or diabetic)

Hello! I'm new here to the forums but not new to homeschooling or Mystery of History and I recently became the Team Leader for Linda Hobar's convention booth for the Midwest Convention in Cincinatti, Ohio in April. I'm and filling slots for those who have or are using MoH and want to volunteer at her booth to talk to those who may stop by and have questions about the curriculum, how it can be used, etc. I have several slots still open, if you want to sign up for slot feel free to message me through the boards or email me at SeekingHim at gmail dot com Friday April 5th: 9:30a.m. to 1 p.m. (3.5 hours) 1 slot left 1:00p.m. to 4:30p.m. (3.5 hours) 2 slots 4:30 p.m. to 8:00p.m. (3.5 hours) 2 slots Saturday April 6th: 9:30a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (4 hours) 1 slot left 1:30p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (4 hours) 2 slots 5:30p.m. to 6:30 p.m. tear down (1 hour) 2 slots (no compensation) For the one hour tear down slots, Linda has suggested in anyone has teenage sons who could help with that it would be greatly appreciated. For each of the 3.5 or 4 hour shift you work you'll get $50 in product so it would be enough for a text or other MoH product - it wouldn't be a cash pay out but you'd get product. If you want a slot, let me know and also give me a cell phone number so that Linda or I can contact you if needed. Thank you, Sarah

Scheduling a four day school week
Sarah Bailey replied to Katie Jean's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We are in our 2nd year on a 4 day schedule and our 1st year of year round schooling. I don't look at as getting behind but being ahead :) My children do 4 math lessons a week, 4 days of history, 4 of writing/phonics/etc, 2 of science, 1 of art, etc in 4 days. We began the 2012-2013 in April and have already begun our 2nd science, and will be starting MoH Vol 3, having finished Vol 2 last week. I use Fridays as planning, field trip, errands or just relaxing days depending on what we need.
