  1. That would be great. I am very interested, we live in Mexico, but I order all my books at once and have them shipped to family. It works out better that way. Saving money is always a plus.
  2. Using these sites combined with good planning and dedication can be just as good as any books you may buy, and I mean planning. My husband and I were very young when we started our family, 18 and 19, which also meant we had little money. We were so determined to provide the best for our child, just like the older much more prepared parents, that we looked for resources to learn from everywhere. The library and many of these sites served as a road map for us. As young parents we were always worried that we wern't going to teach our chidren all the "right things", so I used many of the ideas and activities I found on these free sites. Imagine my surprise when we enrolled my oldest in a private school (education came before the extras) and found that he was well ahead of the other children. Within two years, and after reading WTM, I became covinced I could do it myself while using these sites. I admit to buying books, but I think it is more to reassure myself that they are where they need to be. We are by no means rich, but I put educational needs up there with roof over head and food, while stil trying to get the best bang for my buck. Since we are in Mexico, these sites are great if we need extra work in some areas, we can't always just order another book. The mail here is not very dependable.
  3. http://www.cdacademy.com/class/2007/09/06/latin-games-online/ http://www.gettingstartedwithlatin.com/ http://hungryfrog.com/classics.html http://homeschool.online.program.latin.jellyfishfun.com/ http://www.memoriapress.com/help/Latin.htm Hope this helps...Anybody got French resources?
  4. That bad, yikes. I already order from Singaporemath.com, but the idea of using the same books used by students in Singapore appealed to me, not so much if it would cost me an arm and a leg. Thanks for the warning.
  5. :confused:oh... I don't know that poem...why is it I only got a list? Can any one tell me where to find it? Pretty please:D.
  6. Has anyone here ever ordered their books from http://www.sgbox.com/singaporemath.html ? I was just wondering what you though of them. How different ae they?
  7. Wow, we should have done this long ago. I am getting all kinds of new ideas, thanks all. By the way, found some Latin resources if anyone wants them.
  8. :iagree: Wel love that book. I have read it to my boys so many times the can recite it...and in general we just love him, great fun.
  9. Here is what I have, but I haven't really weeded through the Spanish sites yet to see if they are good, just found those in the last week. Hope it helps. Oh yeah save noney on ink and paper by using a dry erase board or chalk board. My husband will be laid off this month and was out of work for a few months last year, so I know how you feel. 10. Well we do Latin which he loves and basically does on his own, I thought of Greek, which he wants to do, but don't know which books to use at this age (10). I think WWE will be fine awhile longer since I just sped it up, but we'll see. As far as reading he is still to young of mind for some harder books but maybe I'll have to search harder. He loved Oliver Twist, and Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, which slowed him a little. Maybe Greek is the best idea to give him a challenge...Where to start
  11. Don't forget that maturity can also affect a persons decision to cheat. Also, family. That is, the way you were raised. Here in Mexico, for a long time cheating by the man was seen as ok, deal with it they all do it. It has changed recently, but even I saw it with uncles growing up, it was no secret. their sons grew up thinking it was normal behavior and did the same, although some learned to regret it later... whether it was by growing up, or losing what they took for granted. As women I believe we have a lot of power here, we are the ones who teach our children in more ways than we know. I hope I am teaching my boys to respect women and not use them. If I ever have a daughter I hope she will have good self esteem and never see it as an ok thing to go after a taken man, regardless of how unhappy he may say he is.
  12. I started HSing my children after my oldest started getting ahead and bored at the private school he was at. He was also affected by the fact that his friends were doing the "easy work", making him believe he coul be lazy because he was well ahead of them. HSing solved that but..I think he needs a bump up in LA. He reads more books than I can count and retains all the info. Even SOTW, which he loves, but the reading seems to be getting easy for him. WWE has been great for hid writing, but even that has gotten easy. Even when something is a challenge at first, by mis year he is practically doing it with no help from me...what should I do? Has anyone used Michael Clay Thompson's language arts? Would I need to start at the beginning? IEW, RS to easy.
  13. You are on my favorites now, and to the rest of you thanks a bunch. All that stuff will keep him busy for awhile. I forgot to mention, we are in Mexico so no US tournaments, but I found one here that he will begin next month. Thanks:)
  14. http://www.bigbrainz.com/Download.html Here you go $10 off, hope it works.:D
  15. Since you now know that she can write a sentence that long (with a little complaining :) in my house I would require that much two times per day (morning and later afternoon) and then over time slowly increase it so she's making progress toward writing more each time. :iagree:
  16. Don't worry everyone. Remember that drawing tends to use larger movements in the wrist and arm. Writing on the other hand really works their little fingers and hand in general. Try setting the books aside a few weeks and trying some short silly sentences you make up. The cat is fat. It may be under their mental level, but it will make those little fingers stronger. ve no idea how to maybe you can even make up some fun hand exercises.
  17. Thanks..just what I needed. What's hive? Maybe mine will be interested..Hmm:D The funny thing is that I taught him chess about 6 months ago using Chess For Children and he caught on so fast, I was shocked. My 18 yr old brother inlaw lives with us and plays so it was fine at first, but then he wanted to play non-stop. My husband, who never played chess, started getting books to learn. That has helped, there are now three adults that can play, but still not enough. His older brother won't play any more because he always wins. Well wish me luck, oh and please, let me know about hive.
  18. My 8yr old son loves chess and is starting to drice me up the wall. He recently learned to play chess and now he wants to play all the time. I found him a local chess class starting in March but we need something now. I love playing with him, but just need a rest sometimes. He has read every book he can get his hands on and now he wants to try out everything he has seen in the books. Does anyone know of a good computer chess game? Downloads? Etc.
  19. What about personal responisibility? When I was living in SoCal they had the 6AM-6PM program. It was supposed to help families in which both parents had to work. The children stayed at school during these hours to keep them out of the streets, they provided homework help, food, and lots of games for free...sounds good. But I saw a lot of parents who enrolled their kids, and were at home. Call me old fashion, but I don't use babysitters when I'm at home. It may or may not be much oney, but it could be put towards educating kids and not sticking them with 35 other students. Sad.
  20. Just wondering what manipulatives you have used, and how you liked them? What did you use them for? Tangrams, bottle caps, Etc.
  21. I usually don't like to let go of my money, but Math is the exception. So many kids fall behind in Math because they don't have the needed resources, or it wasn't taught in a way they got, or enjoyed. I want mine to see that it can be fun, and is needed in life. I hated Math in school, but as an adult I appreciate it more. I'll look into what you said, thanks lots.:D
  22. DUH! Wow, took me a while to catch up LOL. They call it that in construction, usually referring to heavy duty metal ones. Why would they do it in this case?
  23. Go with a kitchen scale, cheap at your local WM. I took advantage of living in Mexico and got a scale at one of the outdoor narkets. The kids got a kick out of that. Also, they help me pick out and weigh the fruit at the store. Then we figure out the cost. (A little household budgeting lesson snuck in) My oldest is becoming a pro at picking fruit that isn't bruised.
