  1. This will be for my personal use. None of the kids live at home while studying.
  2. My kids are all in college, so the educational apps are no longer a priority for me.
  3. We HAVE had problems with Apple products. Over the years, our family has had to have two Touches and two Nanos replaced by Apple during the one-year warranty period due to hardware issues. I'm not saying that Android products or a Nexus would not have problems, only that it isn't unique to Nexus.
  4. I expected someone to try and convince me that an iPad would be better, but it looks like a Nexus really is my best option. Now, to find the money in the budget...
  5. I'm thnking about buying a tablet. I used to plan to get an Apple product, because I've had two iPod Touches and have lots of apps. However, my smartphone is Android and I actually prefer it to the Apple iOS. I like the interface better, the ability to personalize, and I've downloaded a keyboard app that I love. It recognizes whether I'm typing in English or Spanish, and gives 3 options. It also learns my word patterns and makes accurate predictions. I'm looking at the new Nexus 7. Anyone want to help me decide?
  6. We're in a temporary house of wood and sheetrock while we build. Our permanent house will be cement block. No houses here have insulation of any kind or a/c. I think if you're not used to going in and out of the coolness of an air-conditioned environment, your body adjusts to the heat better. Many people world-wide have lived for centuries in the heat without a/c.
  7. We live in Ecuador, one degree north of the equator, and don't have AC. We keep windows open, have screen doors, use ceiling fans and floor fans, etc. And YES, it is humid, it's the tropics! Edited to add: We don't have seasons, so it's hot 12 months a year. The temperatures vary some with the rainy and dry seasons, but not significantly.
  8. NorthStar Academy It's not cheap, but worth it, we think. Both our sons received their high school diploma, and both got academic free rides in college- Full tuition, books, room and board. And they did well in grades on the university level.
  9. Good point. I do keep in mind that elderly relatives and people who don't do computers need to be contacted personally in case of a crisis. However, if someone has email, I don't keep a list of those who don't have Facebook. It's not ideal, but it's reality. And, Facebook is easier than email. It's quicker, and you don't lose people who change their email addresses. No emails returned undeliverable.
  10. Friends I see on Facebook are part of my daily life. I greet them often and we share the joys and stuggles and other things about our days. They stay in my mind. When someone chooses not to be on Facebook, they choose not to be part of that. I don't have a conscious list in my mind of who is not on Facebook, and sadly, they tend to fade away if they are not contacting me elsewhere. Like it or not, Facebook is the way that most people choose to communicate today. I imagine, in the late 1800's, that some people said, "I do not need a telephone! If someone wants to talk to me, they can come to my house!" And, like today, it probably didn't happen often. Those with telephones received information more timely and more frequently than those who didn't. Facebook serves this purpose in today's society. Those who choose not to be on Facebook choose to limit their communication with others, both given and received.
  11. I always had the passwords and just logged them out of Facebook during school hours. When schoolwork was done, I put the password in and logged them back in.
  12. You can also buy an album as a gift and print out a gift certificate with a code. Give the certificate as the gift. He inputs the code and downloads the album.
  13. Download the app Apps Gone Free. Every day, it has a list of apps that are free for one or two days.
  14. I think the OP wants the option to use the computer without it being able to connect to the internet.
  15. Actually, I am an m and live overseas and travel to the US occasionally. I need an unlocked phone without a plan that I can use in both countries by changing the SIM. In my country of service, I will have a data plan. The cost of an unlocked iPhone is prohibitive, otherwise it would be my first choice.
  16. Anyone with experience with a Sony Erickson Xperia?
  17. I'm thinking about a smartphone. I might prefer one with a qwerty keyboard, or I might prefer an iphone. One of my adult children has an iphone and another has a blackberry. What is best and why? Convince me.
  18. Jesus actually said "diakonos" in both of these instances. The translators chose to use different words. I believe, according to context and the meaning of diakonos, that "servant" would be the best translation of what Jesus said in both verses.
  19. What case do you have for your iPad 2? What do you like and dislike about the case? Thanks!
  20. I check library books out on my Kindle without leaving home.
  21. Is there anyone here who has/had an iPad and did not like it. Why? Please, I want opinions from people how have actually owned one and decided it was not for them. If you have one and like it, feel free to comment, too, with its strengths.
  22. Where is she taking online classes? What kind of deadlines does she have? All three of ours have taken online classes full-time. I have to be involved in deadlines and accountability. Teens will often not do work if no one checks to see if its done. I also keep up with grades. My role is supervisor, and that requires involvement. Our oldest is graduating this year and is mostly independent in online work, but as a 9th grader, she needed supervision and help with time management.
  23. For me, the roux provides flavor and color, not thickening. I did a search for file' gumbo, and couldn't find one that did not start with a roux. I found this description that matches my experience living in SW Louisiana and New Orleans. I do understand that other parts of the state may have different recipes. http://www.chefrick.com/a-guide-to-great-gumbo/ "The first step with all gumbos is making a roux".
