  1. You can check out this free book, Inquiry in Action. http://www.inquiryinaction.org/ Ruth in NC
  2. While typing everything is fine for me and probably will be in college, someone is going to have to read my son's ACT or SAT essay. And right now, I don't anyone could or would be willing to struggle through it. My 14yo is working through Fix It Write for the next few weeks. We changed to fountain pens but I don't think that made much difference. I am emphasizing care with letter formation and size. I hope this works. Good luck. Ruth in NC
  3. My 14yo is very much like that. I work on inference when we watch movies or read aloud. " Why do you think he said that?" " Why would he do that now?" Then I try to help him see the same things in his reading. It's slow going but he is getting it. Part of my DS's problem is fear that he will be asked to write down anything he says in response to a question. Thus, better to shrug his shoulders and mumble, I dunno.:glare: And I agree that growing that armpit hair and the change in leg hair must be using up some serious brainpower. Ruth in NC
  4. Transcripts were organized by year but the course description was by subject, then by year. In other words, within History, the 9th grade, Ancient History was listed before the 10th, Medieval and Early Modern History. Same within Science and the others.
  5. Similarly, the Grade 9 and 10 texts, Biology Matters, Chemistry Matters and Physics Matters found at http://www.singaporemath.com/Science_Matters_s/128.htm are meant to be used concurrently. Ruth in NC
  6. I have this one bookmarked but don't know anything else about it. Botany Adventures by Kym Wright http://learn-and-do.com/botany.htm Ruth in NC
  7. :grouphug: I dropped DS off at UNC CH Friday but last year he went overseas for a gap year so 60 miles away seems like nothing. BUT next Sunday, DD leaves for her gap year, 9 months, in Israel. That's going to be hard. My only daughter. Like you say, who will make brownies? Ruth in NC, tearing up already
  8. Thanks for the responses. We rented 3 textbooks from Chegg, costing about 1/3 of the prices of "very good" used books. They arrived yesterday. One is a brand new book sent from Amazon, the others in good condition. I felt like we had gambled when we did it a few days ago and it is encouraging that others have found the experience to be positive. We are pleased with what we received. Now he just has to get them back to Chegg.
  9. While looking for DS's first semester college textbooks, we saw rental options from Chegg and others. Anyone tried this? Ruth in NC
  10. Solved my own problem. Under the headset was the parent's guide, which I had not seen before. No worksheets, quizzes or tests for Hebrew, or most other languages. Oh well. Now I need to make sure I didn't pay too much extra for the Homeschool edition.
  11. I have all the discs you mention, but the files are all in Hebrew. My Hebrew readers will be home tonight but I think you're right, I'm going to call them. Thanks again.
  12. Thanks. Perhaps I don't recognize the workbook pages on my suppl disc. My Hebrew is practically nonexistent so I may just need a Hebrew reader to help me. At least now I know there should be something on the disc. Again, thanks. Ruth in NC
  13. Is there a difference other than the ability to maintain records? Are worksheets available to print out and use? If so, where? I thought there were but have not been able to find any. Thanks for any info. Ruth in NC
  14. 8th grade plan for the last one, sniff, sniff Oak Meadow English 8 Oak Meadow Civics w/ extras to complete 3 Boy Scout Merit Badges Megawords CPO Life Science, jazzed up with extra reading and labs Modern Hebrew w/ Rosetta Stone and Hebrew Online Dolciani PreAlgebra to review then Algebra, probably Jacobs Ruth in NC
  15. I am planning a similar course for my son in a couple of years. Another resource I have bookmarked is the Royal Society of Chemistry, Kitchen Chemistry at this website. http://www.rsc.org/education/teachers/learnnet/kitchenchemistry/00.htm# Good luck. Sounds like fun. Ruth in NC
  16. Paige, I took my three and the older two delivered for other drivers and the youngest went with me. The organizer for that day was thrilled because we essentially made up 2 full cars for her. They were much appreciated. We have been doing this for years now and only the youngest and I are left. BTW the other drivers were known to me, didn't let them go off with strangers.:001_smile: Good luck. Ruth in NC
  17. The only course we used was English A, a 6th grade course. I did pay for the teacher's input because my goals were for my son to work on writing with input from someone other than me. I told her what I wanted and she was very helpful. He made great progress in just a few months. The writing at this level was taught very incrementally which I liked and he needed. The lit selections were good also. The grammar and vocabulary were less interesting. We considered doing English B next year but he liked the book choices of Oak Meadow better so we are starting that. Ruth in NC
  18. So far, Math Dolciani PreAlgebra, maybe some LoF since he likes it OM Civics and English 8 CPO Life Science, lots of supplementing with living books and projects, since it is really a 6th grade book Hebrew Online B and Rosetta Stone extra handwriting, copywork, reading Boy Scouts, martial arts
  19. I'm interested in which speed reading program you used as well. Ruth in NC
  20. It comes with one cartridge in the pen. I bought some refills but we haven't used any yet. Ruth
  21. We like Preppy pens from Jetpens. Colorful, easy to use and get here in about 48 hours. Ruth in NC
  22. Two resources I am looking at for doing an ecology lab are JASON Project, Resilient Planet http://www.jason.org/public/WhatIs/CurrORPIndex.aspx and Ecology box, http://www.mysciencebox.org/ecology I have used the Science Box material before and it is great. Ruth in NC
  23. That's often a difficult decision. I pulled my old copy out yesterday afternoon and, really, it's more meaty than I remembered. Again, not Hewitt, but 3 or 4 problems per appropriate chapters. Make a motor or a telephone in electronics. Good luck. Ruth
  24. I am planning to use the Civics with my 8th grader this fall also but he covered the physical science this year in an outsourced class. BTW I was looking over your first message and I will say that the OM Phys Sci is much less intensive than the Conceptual Physics which I have but have not used personally. Ruth in NC
  25. I used it several years ago with my son who is not a science oriented kid. He liked it well enough. The labs were easy to do at home. It is well laid out and seemed complete. I would not call it challenging and I don't recall it being very math intensive. But it was quite adequate for our use. Sorry, wish I could be more specific. Ruth in NC
