  1. I thought it sounded great, and the reviews were glowing. We *really* wanted to like this program, but it just didn't work for us. The readings were not in-depth enough, and the tone was too glib. EK thought the labs were "hokey", and for the most part, I agree. Looks like we'll be sticking with Apologia. *I* like it, but EK... not so much.
  2. And besides BJU and ABeka? Labs are a MUST, household materials preferred.
  3. Cornerstone Curriculum's Starting Points and supplemental books, especially: Mere Christianity The Deadliest Monster Frankenstein Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
  4. I used to be really strict about this, but I haven't been as much of a stickler about the schedule the past couple of years since the dc are older.
  5. Showering or bathing and then getting dressed gets us awake & moving. BUT... every once in awhile, the dc will wear their pajamas all day.
  6. We need a car for ER & my FIL's neighbor is selling his Explorer. FIL looked at it and drove it and said it looked good to him. What we really wanted was a Honda CRV or maybe a Toyota Rav4 (good gas mileage & dependability), but we can't find one in our price range (up to $5,000). I don't really want to "settle" for something else, but... If you have any experience with a 1997 Explorer, please post your opinion. Thanks!
  7. Christa McAuliffe because she was the first "teacher in space" -- and in 1986I was just beginning my teaching career and actually considered applying for the position -- and Rick Husband because he was a dedicated Christian and I therefore felt a kinship with him.
  8. I have about 40 rolls  of 35mm film + disposable cameras that I need to get developed. These are all "leftovers" from our pre-digital camera days, and some of them are almost 10 years old! I've been told that some of the film has probably "gone bad". I hope not! I want to get these developed, but I don't want to spend a fortune. I used to send film to York or Clark in mailers that came in the Sunday paper. They were pretty cheap, but the pictures turned out fine. Are these folks even still in business? I just heard of Snapfish -- anybody use them? Or would I be better off just taking them to Walmart?
  9. I actually enjoy choosing curriculum and making lesson plans -- even though it is sometimes SO frustrating! I've done it for so long now that I can't imagine what it will be like when both my dc have graduated. I'm thinking about the possibility of writing an integrated history & literature/writing curriculum that combines the best of TRISMS & TOG in a very user-friendly format.
  10. There's been no official word about the scholarship from the college -- neither "congratulations" nor "we're sorry, but...". We're going on the assumption that everything is proceeding as planned (with the scholarship) until we hear otherwise.
  11. Today was our last day of school. ER took his final test in College Algebra and turned in his last papers for his other subjects. I averaged his grades for this semester, and he had all A's. That means that he graduates high school with a 4.0 average. (He'd had a bit of trouble with a couple of chapters in college algebra, so we were thinking that might turn out to be his first B ever, but he made it! Whew!) We are all so very tired and burned out, and very much in need of our summer break!
  12. The economy is not just the work of one person -- even the president. It is an evolving entity, if you will, and in any given period, it show the results of years & years of tweaking. It's kind of like mixing paint by hand; you add different colors and it changes, sometimes more than you wanted and sometimes less. So you have to keep working at it to get it just right. And what's just right to you is not acceptable to someone else. So it has to be modified to accomodate everyone's desires -- which is not possible, so there has to be compromise. And once everyone finally agrees, and implements the plan, the needs change because life changes. Then there are more modifications and more compromises and it just never ends.
  13. Married at 19 (& turned 20 four months later) but no babies until I was 29 (& turned 30 3 months later). ER was born about 2 weeks after our 10th wedding anniversary.
