  1. Oldest DS wanted a party, and oh my, did we ever have a big open-house style party. The weather didn't cooperate and so on Sunday in early June we had over 80 people in our home because it was over 100 degrees outside. Youngest DS just graduated and he did not want a party or any celebration. After his last final at the CC (and he was all done with his AP test too) he asked to go clothes shopping. We headed to the outlet mall, had a wonderful late lunch, shopped for shirts, pants, shorts, shoes---all those items he felt he needed as a future business student. We finished the day with ice cream before returning home. His diploma arrived in the mail today and we'll give it to him on Friday when we go out to dinner as a family.
  2. So nice to come here and find other moms facing the same thing I am. My oldest left for college 4 yrs ago, a mere 20 minutes down the road and somewhere during Soph yr he and his GF decided that staying at his home on the weekends was a wonderful place to *chill.* Typically they would come on Friday afternoon and head back mid-Monday, most every weekend for the last 3 years. He and GF graduate this month and are headed to Utah---far, far away from Delaware----for grad school. Younger DS is headed 500 miles west to college and leaves mid-August. Since he'll be on his college's rifle team I don't expect him to be back home except for Christmas. Yes, sudden empty-nester here too. Our school room is just about empty of books and this is all becoming quite real to me. I have my AP Statistics online class to keep me busy, and my quilting business so I know my days will be filled, but it sure will be different. I also have started making a solid effort to get into shape and lose all those pounds gained years ago from eating chocolate (and other stuff) while the kids struggled through their math worksheets, and as I wondered if I was really doing enough. I too am cheering for them but oh my, when my PC screen-saver pops up with random pictures of them from yesterday-year, I hear a wail inside me too.
  3. I also want to add that I had 2 courses *rejected* from the NCAA. The first was English 9 --- we used IEW Level B Continuation. I had provided a general outline of the course syllabus (Unit titles) and they wanted: 1) Text(s) used: (what books or novels were used for writing assignments.) 2) More detailed course description/outline. 3)More detailed assessment information. I went to the IEW site, pulled up their detailed scope and sequence chart, labeled it with dates, included a note that English 9 was a writing course and as such books or novels outside of the IEW text were not used. It was accepted. The other course was Rhetoric-Logic. Again, the request was for additional information regarding assesments. In the updated CCW I included the ISBNs numbers for the test book. I don't know if that was acceptable or not since this course was not listed as one of DS's 15 approved courses. The last couirse he needs to meet their 16 course requirement is English 12.
  4. First, Sue in St. Pete, I greatly appreciate the support and sharing that you have given to me regarding the NCAA over the past year. Like you academics was always our focus. Neither of my boys were ever interested in anything athletic so it was a *shock* to me when my younger ds became interested in competitive rifle shooting in 10th grade. It was even more of a shock when his coach advised us to register him with the NCAA, mid-Junior year, because "if he wanted he would not only compete in college but he would receive an athletic scholarship." Oh my, does DS ever want to continue. Last spring I prepared our Core Course Worksheets and wondered if the French classes DS took from Potter's School would be accepted. DS didn't *need* these courses to meet the NCAA Division 1, 16 Core Course requirement, but I prepared them anyway. I wanted to see if the NCAA would accept them as Core Courses. They did! I was quite clear on the CCW the length of the course, the frequency of instruction and included the detailed syllabus provided to us from Potter's School. I did list myself as the Teacher of Record with the PS teacher listed as 'Other' but I don't know whether that was important. The information I provided certainly substantiated the fact that the course lasted a full school year and covered material that a student in a conventional classroom might also cover. DS took 8 courses from the local CC. In a phone conversation with an NCAA rep I was assured that since the course was taken at the CC, taught by a CC prof that the course would be worth 1 high school credit. She also stated that if the CC course had been taught at the local high school then it would be worth 1/2 credit. I awarded each CC course 1 high school credit and these courses were accepted as meeting the core course requirement and awarded 1 credit each. I did not file Core Course Worksheets for these classes but had the CC send DS's transcript to the NCAA. This morning DS academic status with the NCAA changed to: Final Qualifier (Early Academic Qualifier). He just has to complete English 12 which I'm teaching. Next Wednesday, on the National Letter of Intent signing day, DS will be signing with OSU and joining their rifle team.
  5. DS, my youngest, has decided to attend The Ohio State University. The main criteria was to find a college with a Division 1 Rifle team. Oh my! That limited him to less than 2 dozen colleges in the country. Then last year, just as the military service academies were starting to recruit him he was diagnosed with a medical condition that eliminated them and the other military colleges. He also decided that he wanted to have the possibility of his rifle team going to the NCAA rifle championship--and winning it. This further restricted his search to under 10 schools. I added Ohio State University to the list because it is my alma mater. DS wasn't interested in OSU, they had a new coach, and after all it was *mom's* school. We visited those few colleges last spring---was it really just a year ago because it feels like eons ago----with a rifle team and somewhere during our visits DS decided that he wanted to go to a big university where going to a college sporting event was *important*. He also added in that if he decided to switch his major, he could do so without switching schools. During the visit to OSU DS visited with the Business department and was sold on their high academic standards, their contacts,...... It was rather funny because whenever I mentioned a different school DS would bring up OSU's academics. Over the summer at matches DS spoke to rifle shooters from the various colleges. It didn't help him narrow his search one bit but he liked what he heard from the OSU shooters about their new coach. He really liked the meeting he had with the OSU coach, at OSU, in May too. In the fall he went on official visits to several schools and it was during these visits that he decided that the OSU team was a fit. He had 2 schools offer him full rides that he turned down (combination of merit and athletic scholarships) but he said that their academics just didn't compare to OSU. Even though DS had decided upon OSU in November we really worried first about whether DS would get in, and next about whether he would receive a merit scholarship. He received 2 merit scholarships which, along with his athletic scholarship moved OSU from being the most expensive school on DS list to the least expensive school! What a win!!! On April 16th DS will be signing his National Letter of Intent with OSU. He will be at a campus 500 miles from home, at a school with +50,000 students, and with a life-threatening chronic disease but I am not too concerned. He'll have his teammates, his coach, and trainers looking out for him. My DH family lives in the area and he has a cousin that works at OSU. Oh, and I WILL be going out to OSU for everyone of their home matches. Carole

  8. In 9th grade my son used Intermediate Logic Canon Press, ISBN: 1591280354 for part of his rhetoric course. I no longer own this book but to satisfy an NCAA I need the table of contents for his Core Course Worksheets. If you have this book I would really appreciate it if you would post the table of contents here. THANKS!! Carole

  10. LOL!!! The more Buckeyes, the better!!! Thanks --- we're pretty excited here. And today DS #1 heard from his second grad school, a Computer Science Prof at U of Oregon is recommending him for Admission to their PhD program. 2 down, 4 more to hear from. DS didn't expect to hear from any of them for another month.
  11. DS heard from Ohio State today!!! He received the National Buckeye Scholarship and the Trustee Scholarship.
  12. Nancy, Thank you so much for sharing this! Your *review* definitely put a huge smile on my face this morning. I'm not sure what it was that I had her learn in probability like the back-of-her-hand.... perhaps the difference between independent events and mutually exclusive events, or perhaps how to check if two events are independent. Wonderful, wonderful news. Congratulations to Kelly too. Carole
  13. My youngest son pushed the "ACCEPT" button at Ohio State University yesterday morning. Exciting. We don't know if he has any merit aid from there yet but we're going forward. He will also be signing his National Letter of Intent in April with OSU to join their Division 1 Rifle team. He'll have an athletic scholarship which will cover a little bit. :hurray: My oldest son called me this morning--he's graduating this spring and applied to 6 grad schools in mid-December to mid-January---and shared that he received an email from a professor at UC Davis, one of his 2 stretch grad schools. The email stated that the prof was quite impressed with DS' accomplishments and would be recommending that Admissions accept him! He plans to pursue a PhD in Computer Science. WAHOO!!! Waiting to hear from the other 5. :hurray: Carole
  14. Ahhhhh, thank you FaithManor. I know how difficult that is to do. I will admit that I rooted for MSU in the Rose Bowl. OSU is the only Big 10 School with a rifle team that DS could join.
  15. My DS is a senior who took 2 classes a semester at the CC last year and is doing the same this year. In addition to his CC classes we do English 12 (Shakespeare) at home and AP Statistics online through PA HS'ers (I also teach the class but I make him work through the online classroom.) This past fall he took MicroEcon and College Alg w/ Trig. The previous year he took MacroEcon and likes the subject so much he has decided to major in Business in college with a focus on Finance and Econ. This term he is continuing with the math and taking Physics. In response to your question-- Would those classes be "enough"? --- I think so! I'm awarding his CC classes 1 high school credit, which means DS will earn 6 credits this year plus his *fun* PE course. DS's Physics Prof told them to expect to spend about 10 hrs a week outside of class on the class. That's a lot of time. He spends about that much time weekly on his math class too. Sometimes his AP Stat work gets pushed to the weekend and English to the evenings. Carole
  16. DS was supposed to hear from Ohio State U by December 15th however they informed him that they were having difficulty downloading information from the Common AP so decisions were being delayed until the end of January. What a sad day that was especially since DS heard from 2 of his friends that they received acceptance emails. Finally tonight we heard from Ohio State University and DS was accepted!! We are doing a huge happy dance here. It is his #1 choice. He really enjoyed being with the rifle team, the coach, likes the campus and the business college, and he said it felt like the right place to him. I noticed on our visit in November that he really seemed relaxed and quite at peace while we walked the campus. I'm a graduate of OSU and with family in the area it is a good fit for him. Now for the National Buckeye Merit Scholarship to come through for him too. BTW, after looking closer at U of Memphis DS decided not to apply to the school. I've schooled two boys, we've sent out 14 college applications and received 14 college acceptances. :thumbup1:
  17. This agrees with what I was told when I spoke with admissions yesterday. The College's admissions person said that when they downloaded to their system, many--but now all---of the student applications came in corrupted and unreadable from the Common App. They believe the problem has been solved. He also confirmed that the admission notices would not go out prior to January 31st. He also was not willing to accept a paper form of my son's application. On the plus side, the CC has sent DS's fall grades out to the college showing once again that DS is on the Dean's List. Hope that helps him receive the merit scholarship.
  18. Yes, the Common Ap online is the only way to apply to this school. I've been calling their admissions office but "do to the heavy call volume we are unable to take your call at this time" message does not permit me to even leave a message let alone talk with a live person. I suspect that most of their staff have left the office and are using up their vacation days before the end of the year. I just went in and had no difficulty at the Common Ap site viewing my DS pdf application and no difficulty viewing my submitted documents. :crying:
  19. The CA is THE only way to apply to this school. The coach said DS *should* get in, it's just frustrating to have to wait and wonder if that *should* is really a *yes he is in but I can't say that.*
  20. LOL! That's what DH said last night when I shared the email with him. DS just checked again, application still pending. Very frustrating, but chocolate, wine and quilting do help a bit.
  21. DS has been accepted to 5 of his 6 schools, but the one we're waiting for is his top choice. He met their Nov 1st early action deadline in early September so the wait has been long. The school told us in person DS would hear before Dec 15, and it was also stated on their website that early action decisions would be made prior to mid-December. Yesterday morning very, very early one of DS's friends had an email from the school that he was accepted. Around 4:30 another one of DS' friends heard that she was accepted. Immediately after that DS received an email from the school --- thanks to the Common Ap the decision is being pushed out, possible to the end of January! Six weeks? And why were some kids notified but not others? What's a mom or the applicant to do other than sit and wait? PS --- Early Action is not binding. It is not the same as Early Decision. So the student can pursue other schools if they take the Early Action route.
  22. So, so agree. End of Soph year DS joined a competitive shooting team. Beginning of Junior year DS learned from his coach that he should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center cause he was good enough to shot in college --- at the Division 1 level..... yes, heavy sigh...... tomorrow we head out on his last Official visit :driving: . And of course there's the NCAA EC to deal with. At least I now have 15# on my hips cause my shoulders just had to much to bear these last few months. :crying:
  23. While searching for college scholarships I came across several Ayn Rand writing contests. Here's the link, love to see a WTM kid win one: http://aynrandnovels.org/essay-contests.html Anthem -- eligibility 8th, 9th, 10th grade, deadline March 20 Fountainhead --- eligibility 11th & 12th grade, deadline April 26, 2014 Carole
  24. Exciting news!! Congratulations!! I am so very happy for you. BTW, our NCAA status still says *Academic Decision not available* They did say November didn't they? Carole
