  1. First, what wonderful information is in this thread! Thank you to all who contributed.
  2. That will work well for us. We'll be arriving into town in time for dinner. For lunch we usually eat on campus at one of the eaterys if not the student caft. Thanks!
  3. I sent you a pm. Thanks! Yes, he'll be applying to both schools plus a few other schools that have his sport. I'll make sure we explore their Living Learning Communities when we visit next month. On a side note---If you could, please suggest a place the college students like to eat at, lunch or dinner.
  4. Murray State University or University of Kentucky? Both schools have the athletic team DS wants but I'm not too familiar with either one--other than their basketball team. :) DS is exploring business--accounting or finance---he is a good 'B' student but not a great student. Love to hear from folks who either have a student there or is an alumni. Also, if your student applied to either school, how was the process. Thanks! Carole
  5. Seems like just yesterday I was here all worried about how oldest DS would do as a college freshman. Well, I could not have written a better script for what has happened with him at college over the last 3 years. After freshman year he landed an internship, paying one no less, with a college prof. He continued to work for her all soph year and even listened to us mid-year when we advised him not to quit when he wanted to. After soph year he was named a summer scholar, wrote his first of 2 research papers that summer, still working for the same prof. Now as a junior he just accepted a summer internship with Oak Ridge National Labs. I'm happy for him and he's quite pleased too. The prof he's been working for since that first summer helped set it all up too.
  6. I'm working on filling out these NCAA worksheets and am at a loss for the 'Types of Assessment Used' section. Having a kid who would be play a sport in college was never, ever in the plans back in 9th and 10th grade. Then DS discovered shooting, and that he is really, really good --- right now he shoots better than the vast majority of Division 1 collegiate shooters ..... I'm jumping through the NCAA hoops, filling out the worksheets but what do I to put into this section? Often we just had conversations to determine his understanding, or as in math he just kept doing problems until he demonstrated mastery.
  7. I'm with Kai here. We tried Foerster's too and it was not a fit for my younger son who doesn't take to math.
  8. My son took French I & II through Potter's School and used BJU French 1 curriculum. It taught a lot of grammar and IMHO could be used in your situation. I enrolled him with Potter's School because their teacher is fluent and I am not. I found the books used so they are out there. There's also a workbook that my son never used because just completing all the exercises in the textbook was more than he could really handle. If your son is into workbooks you might consider that too. Carole
  9. Thank you all for your posts. We are 6 weeks post-diagnosis here and sailing along rather smoothly. We're tittering on honeymoon here, hit a few low numbers but nothing scarry yet. The highs are far apart and really not that high (225s). DS is handling all this quite well and I only freak out a bit (never in front of DS) when another shoe falls. This diagnosis also uncovered a heart valve problem which has me concerned. We've had a few meetings with cardiac docs, had lots of tests run and now we're waiting 6 months till the BG has been 'normal' for awhile and then re-evaluate. Because of the how our primary doc handled my ds' initial test results, mainly his lack of any sense of urgency when he reported to us that DS had an A1C of 12.8 and was diabetic---this doc wanted us to wait close to a week before coming back in to see him! we switched docs. Yesterday I obtained ds' medical record from this doc and discovered that in May 2011---yes, 18 months ago----DS had ketones and proteins in his urine! That was never reported to me nor were any follow-up tests suggested. Oh, and DS has never been close to being on a low-carb diet so the ketones weren't there from that. The urine wasn't checked for sugar. I'm just livid that ds has possible been a T1 for a lot longer than what we knew, and worried about the possible internal damage this could have caused. Tomorrow we visit the new doc. I also tagged this thread with T1 Diabetes so that if any future new T1 mom comes searching they can find all the wonderful information you shared with me.
  10. I’m looking for a health/nutrition textbook that we could use for next term. I’ve never included a health/nutrition course in our studies and DS needs to change his eating habits. He was recently dx'd as a Type 1 Diabetic. I'd like to help him understand why he should be eating fruits and vegetables, what fats do, the role of protein,..... Any ideas for a course? It does not need to be written for a Type 1 Diabetic, just a general nutrition course. The text / course must be secular. Thanks!
  11. When I saw the DS's weight loss in Sept T1 crossed my mind but I thought---he's too old to be hit with that. Guess not. Yes, hs'ing sure has helped to decrease my worries since I can see him, watch what he eats, see him testing his BG and see that he is gettting his shots. I like the idea of making a carb chart. I picked up a small white board, 8x11" size, and he writes his food & carb count on that so he/we can see what the count is up to before he injects or eats. We already have 2 nice food scales so we were good there. The endo team at the hospital sent us home with the Pink Panther book and Calorie King. PPB really helped clarify stuff too. I've already rec'd the comments from his coach & friends --- "I don't understand how he can have diabetes, he's so skinny." or the, "You should make him exercise more cause that's how my GM got hers under control." I grew up having several classmates with T1 so it's hard for me to understand how folks do not know about T1. At our meeting on Monday with our Endo Team they suggested the pump for DS. He was not interested in even hearing about it. I'm giving him time and maybe in 3 or 6 months he'll be more interested in it. Thanks!
  12. We live in Delaware and I love their new driver's law. DS had to take driver's ed at the public school and then obtained a provisional license. He must be supervised by someone over the age of 25 for at least the first 6 months and this can extend to 12 months. During the supervised period the child is under the parent's insurance plan and there is no charge. That is a huge incentive to keep superivising. So, our boys have or will be 100% supervised driving for the first year-- or until his high school graduation. DS #2 got his license at 16 and is presently working through the first 6 months of his provisional license. We'll keep supervising him until his high school graduation too. I see no reason to turn the keys over to them earlier.
  13. I took 16yo DS to the ER last week where he was admitted for several days and diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic. He's been home for a week and let me just say I am so glad he is home and not away all day at a PS. I'm still very much in shock over this diagnosis. I went searching the web for an active forum related to T1 and haven't found one. Yes, I found forums but they aren't active since posts from others are just sitting there unanswered. If your child is T1 where do you go for support? Is there an active forum out there? We head back to the hospital tomorrow for another day of training with the endo team which I'm very thankful for. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop too. DS is handling this all but mom is just a bit stressed out here.
  14. I put my 11th grader in a college level writing class at the CC. It has worked out quite well and has been worth the 45 minute drive to get there too. DS luckily got a Prof who requires lots of papers, 2x a week, for the first 8 weeks of the semester. Then I think they moved to 1x a week but this week he was back to having 2 assignments due. Next week he has to givee a presentation and the following week he has a 10 page research paper due. A friend's child was in the class last year and only had to write 3 papers the entire term. It has meant quite a lot of work for me too cause I played the role of writing coach, giving DS feedback and forcing him to revise and revise and revise until the piece was free of grammar errors, contained sufficient detail and was well organized. The change in his writing has been dramatic. Yesterday he handed me a 2 page paper and I think I found only one sentence DS needed to re-write. I don't know if a CC is close to you but I'm happy with our choice.
  15. Washington College where Professor Olsen is teaches is just down the road from us.
  16. My oldest got a snake at age 10 and another at age 11. By the time he was 15 or 16 he was tired of the snakes and advertised them to our homeschool support group. Another family was thrilled to take the 2 (with all their gear) off our hands. His college does not permit pets of any kind and the house he rents now has the same rules.
  17. Ahhhhh that's good to know I do hope he continues to enjoy it. It's so nice to make the connection between here and the student too. My son's in his class too and keeps suggesting food activities  DS can't take the cluttered look so it's good to know that about Larson. Adv Math is on order.
  18. How did I not know about this book? And I consider myself a Dolciani fan. Good to know about the Larson text. DS does need clear examples and explanations. Thanks!
  19. DS is really struggling with Foerster's. He hasn't understood or been able to follow Foerster's explanations either. I thought we would breeze through Ch 1 since he saw the material last spring in Dolciani but that certainly didn't happen. My older son didn't care for Foerster's Calc book but really liked Larson for Calc, thought the explanations were far easier to understand and follow. I see Larson has a pre-calc book and was wondering what it might be like? How does Lials PreCalculus compare to Foerster's Pre-Calc? As for background DS used Singapore in Elementary and Dolciani for pre-alg, alg 1 and 2 w/trig. He's not a math person but with explanation and work from me gets it, eventually.
  20. While I agree it is a good idea to chat in the fall with the local AP Coordinators the ones I have spoken to will only state whether or not they will be offering the test, and whether they might have room for the student. Also, the AP Coordinators in my area do not start thinking of ordering AP test until March / April time frame. Only if your student has any disabilities that might require testing accomadations would I start this process earlier. Here are the dates from the College Board website: February 22, 2013 is the deadline for submitting requests for testing accomadations for students with disabilities. March 1, 2013: Deadline for homeschooled students to contact AP Services (College Board) for a a list of local AP Coordinators at whose schools they could arrange a test. March 15, 2013: Deadline for homeschooled students and students whose schools do not offer AP to contact AP Coordinators identified by AP Services. March 29, 2013: Priority deadline for schools to order AP Exams. Submit orders by this date to ensure timely processing and delivery. April 12, 2013: Final deadline for schools outside the United States, U.S. territories, and Canada to order AP Exams. No orders will be accepted after this date. April 19, 2013: Final deadline for schools in the United States, U.S. territories, and Canada to order AP Exams. No orders will be accepted after this date. When I scheduled AP tests for my oldest, and this coming year when I schedule them for my youngest, I will do so in late February. Even then the schools I turn to might tell me to call them back in late-March or early April.
  21. That is awesome! All your years of work and sweat and tears are certainly being rewarded. I am so happy for you and your daughter. Super, super wonderful news! Carole ps -- call sometime, miss hearing your voice.
  22. Do you consider this acceptable? I certainly do not. I would be searching for a way to stop the fighting.
