  1. My son is in ASL 2 this year. One of the books required is called Inside Deaf Culture. It covers a lot of these issues.
  2. Three of us have read it (me, dh, and ds) and we give it three thumbs up. Dh used to work for PlayStation (so, yeah, gamer) and ds is a gamer, so it was right up their alley!
  3. We went to the Maker Faire in San Francisco a few years ago, and we all had a great time. We did both days. I would recommend both days, as there is so much to see and do. The speakers were fabulous, and the kids loved all the displays and demonstrations. There are a lot of people there, so arrive early and take your patience with you. So worth it!
  4. Oh, Kareni, as always, thank you for all the wonderful links! These hit a little close to home! Oh, what a fantastic problem to have!!!!!! You now have an excuse to put everything else on hold and read, so all the books can get returned on time! That's why this fellow introvert does not go with everyone else, and doesn't even go downtown while it is here! It would be fun, but too much! Hope you enjoyed, and are enjoying the quiet now!
  5. I am also reading HoMW. I am right behind you, on chapter 47.
  6. DS did it last year. He did the questions in the textbook and the tests. I pulled some of the activities, but not all (probably about half?). He did not do the chapter reviews in the activity guide.
  7. I also use the 36 file folder system. During the summer, I try to get as many lit books pre-read as I can. I go through each curriculum and divide it into 33 or 34 weeks to leave some wiggle room for the year. All tests get printed and filed into the right week. Once week one starts, we can hit the ground running!
  8. I have a sophomore and a just graduated senior. They were in public school for elementary years, which means we have a lot of art projects! I was able to consolidate 2 years into one tub (17 X 11 size). We started homeschooling in middle school. I have all middle school years in one tub. For high school, each year gets its own tub. During the year, I have a hanging file folder (or 2 or 3, by the end of the year!) for each subject. At the end of the year, each subject gets put in the tub, with the subjects separated by a piece of colored paper. Does that make sense?
  9. Yay for you! I am right there with you. DD just finished her senior year, DS just finished 9th. Where has the time gone, right?!?!
  10. I really enjoyed Death Comes for the Archbishop. You have described it beautifully!!!
  11. Oh, I am so sorry you are having to go through this! DS broke his leg about a year and a half ago (he was 13 at the time), and was in a full leg cast. The transition to a walking boot was... something I hope to never live through again! It was a slow, painful process. Their fear and anxiety are real. Let her continue to use the crutches and start with just standing and supporting weight on that leg. Baby steps, baby steps. DS went through PT. The fact that he was in a full leg cast was a huge contributing factor. He could not straighten his knee, and the muscle cramps were horrible. And he has a very high pain tolerance (broke his leg during karate practice!). The good news is that 6 months from now this will all be a memory. Just no fun going through it! Hugs, mama!
  12. No idea for recipes, but my daughter said she would come over and help you eat them!
  13. I have not posted in awhile. I have been reading everyone's posts, but haven't chimed in. It has been a busy few weeks. DD turned 18, then took (and passed!) her driver's test. We got her registered for classes for her first semester of college this fall. DH is still job hunting. Lots of interest, and some interviews, but no offer yet. We are learning patience!! I also went through food allergy skin testing. There are now 12 foods I have eliminated from my diet for the next 2 months, then I can test them one at a time for reactions. Learning more patience!! books finished since last check in 48. Mindset 49. Land of my Heart 50. A Heart Divided 51. Some Wildflower in my Heart 52. Make it Stick 53. Radical Simplicity 54. The Elimination Diet 55. The Autoimmune Solution 56. The Midwife currently reading History of the Ancient World History of the Medieval World Longbourn Jude the Obscure Moby Dick
  14. DS still talks about I am David. It is one of the first books that he really thoroughly enjoyed and started him on his love of reading. Powerful book! My mom, too! She never read to me, because she could never sit down long enough!! Oh, Nan, I am so sorry. It is never easy.
  15. I loved Yankee!! I laughed out loud at some parts. Really enjoyed it! We were looking forward to three glorious days of forecasted rain... Ended up with less than an inch over one night. Sigh.
  16. Another resource for testing material is teacherspayteachers.com
  17. Huh. Me, too. Looks like we need to head to the other coast, doesn't it?
  18. I have a CB approved US history syllabus, but that was before the revision, so it probably won't be much help! I also have an approved psych syllabus.
