  1. How is it October already!? I finished Catch-22 a couple days ago. I loved it. I'm very glad I read this classic. I did have a hard time keeping track of all the characters at times. I'm now back to I-Robot For banned book week I read A Light in the Attic to my little one and middle ds is reading Harry Potter. Oldest is reading Lord of the Rings.
  2. Reuseit Earth Totes are hands down my favorite. They last for several years.
  3. Thanks for mentioning this. Middle ds is doing civics this semester. I've added this to my read aloud list. We're still finishing our 1001 nights romp through Persia
  4. I struggle with whether I should read Mein Kampf or not. On the one hand, I think he should not get any recognition for writing a book. I would feel weird reading his book. However, I think it's important to understand the mind of such evil people so we can prevent such people from gaining power and/or causing harm now and in the future. At times I feel like we have learned nothing from the past. I completely understand the ban, and even so it feels funny to think of supporting a ban. It is such a catch-22. (Like my use of the phrase made popular by the book of the same title I am currently reading?) There are things I truly feel should be illegal, and I also realize this changes with society and the culture of the time. It was acceptable for Lewis Carrol to possess certain photographs that today would land him in prison. Conversely, I wear clothing, own books, and participate in behavior that would have landed me in jail in the past. My relatives from Germany stopped dead in their tracks in a B&N store here when they saw a display of Maus. The swastika is illegal in Germany so it blew their mind to see it openly displayed even though it's an anti-nazis book series.
  5. I finished Frozen Assets by Wodehouse. My favorite (except Jeeves) so far. I'm back to listening to Catch-22 which became available just in time for banned book week.
  6. I have. He will stay here until I find him a home. I have asked if they will just list him on their site. I don't want him in a cage in a shelter. The thought makes me cry. He can't go to a foster home with other animals. Besides he does not do well with change. It's best to keep him here. I'm listening to another Wodehouse trying to lift my mood. Frozen Assets. It is very funny and I am trying to immerse into it.
  7. I've been trying to read but I'm too sad. I have to find a home for my cat. It kills me. He has become aggressive toward my other two pets. I don't know why. He's as sweet as can be with us, but he attacks my other cat and my dog. I've had him checked for health problems and the vet said he's fine and that sometimes cats become aggressive towards other animals for no apparent reason. I had him on a medication, but that just kept him in a drugged stupor. That's not a life for a cat. After I stopped giving him the medicine he went back to attacking the other two without warning. It's so strange because he cuddles and purrs with us, but is so mean to the other cat and dog. Those two are walking around in constant fear of being attacked, and I don't want my other cat to develop behavior problems as a result. So I have to keep him on the medicine for however long it takes to find him a home. It will not be easy to find a home for him. Everyone I know either has allergies or has other pets. He obviously needs to be in a home with no other pets. Why can't he just understand that he has to go back to how he was before he decided to hate all other animals?
  8. Maybe I can get the annual plan as a gift. I pay less than that for Learning Ally though. That's what my ds uses. The only thing with that is it doesn't work on his Fire.
  9. Ah, shucks. That's disappointing. I hope she can retake it and get a better score.
  10. I like the Blandings books. I have not read any of the Psmith books. My library doesn't have them.
  11. I finished Love Among the Chickens. I am going to have to start purchasing books if I want to get bingo done. I might need to find other books to fill the spots. I've been on hold for so many books for months.
  12. Thanks for posting the sale. I'm also glad you liked The Ring of Soloman.
  13. And this right here is why I just don't eat out. I finally decided eating out is not worth it. People think I'm a diva for refusing to eat. I don't care. I'm sorry you got sick. I hope recovery happens quicker than usual. I am listening to Love Among the Chickens by Wodehouse. Making me laugh, of course. Haven't yet met a Wodehouse that has disappointed.
  14. Hello fellow book junkies! Irma did no damage to our house. She knocked down some of our trees which broke a section of our fence, and she tore up the dirt road. We lost power at 8 pm Sunday night, and we got it back on last night. Like Shawne, no power = no running water. Highly uncomfortable week. However, I'm grateful that was my only suffering from Irma. It was expected to be much worse in my area so I am very grateful. I have an old cell phone with short battery life so that's why I wasn't using it to get online. Gas was difficult to get in my area because everyone needed it for generators. It's getting back to a more normal supply/demand now that more and more people are getting power. I didn't listen to any audiobooks (refer to my very limited phone battery), but I did read Mr. Midshipman Easy. It was a lovely light diversion to help keep me in a good mood. And this is why I will never lose my love of physical books, there is no reliance on charging batteries with electricity. The night of the storm I read aloud to my kids to help distract them. They were quite scared with all the loud noise and heavy wind/rain and couldn't sleep. I pulled out my copy of One Thousand and One Arabian Nights and helped distract them by entering the world of Ali Baba instead of focusing on what was happening outside. Even my dh got sucked into the stories. The power of books is priceless. Glad you enjoyed it. Penguin, congrats on finishing bingo. Now everyone, the next time you use the bathroom, take a moment to appreciate the flushing toilet with a mere push of a small lever. This is a very underappreciated convenience.
  15. Don't mess with Erin! She will take you down. No, no, he begins a series of allergy shots and his reaction to cats greatly decreases. (Says the mom of a ds who now no longer reacts as badly to dust mites as before he started immunotherapy.) I just finished a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. I love Sherlock Holmes.
  16. Negin, you having any effect from Irma? She's a mighty big storm.
  17. I watched this movie and quite liked it. A few hard to watch scenes though. I am listening to Neil deGrasse Tyson narrate his book Death by Black Hole and I love it. Of course, he could narrate anything for me. He's super smart, funny, witty, and has a rich, dreamy voice which all just makes him sexy as all get out. And no, your opinion may not alter from mine when it comes to Dr. Tyson!
  18. I know mine, my dh's, and my kids. I know because of my pgs. I'm -rh and dh is +rh and hence babies were tested at birth and I was told their type.
  19. Excellent observation. Didn't think of that. In any case, I'm glad such books are in high demand.
  20. How/why did they get in trouble? I was expecting you to say something much worse when you mentioned inappropriate English phrases. If "going nuts" is inappropriate then I have the mouth of a sailor!
  21. Rose, I didn't send you Jar City. I haven't read that book. The thanks belongs to someone else here. :) I really hope you get some answers sooner than later. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to not know what ails your child. It was bad enough when I was sick for three years before getting my celiac/hashimoto's diagnosis. I thought I would go crazy not knowing what was wrong with me. That stress is even worse when it's your child. Lady FL, Hope you are able to take your mind off your worry. I'm sure your ds will have a great time. I'm listening to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and enjoying the imaginary world. Rowling created such a fun world. I will watch the movie when I'm done. My middle ds is going to start a Harry Potter class at co-op so he's reading his way through the books. He's seen all but the last movie and listened to the audio books when he was younger. He doesn't remember much from the audio books because it has been several years. It's fun to watch him become pulled into the world of Hogwarts now that he's older and really gets into the story. I'm so excited for the class. Can someone please tell me why all the books I want to read or listen to have a wait list? It's not like I'm reading the current NYT best sellers. Who knew Catch-22, Through the Looking Glass, and Death by Black Hole are such popular books? Those aren't the only books I have on hold but they are the ones I'm surprised to have a wait list.
  22. Hugs to everyone having a rough time. Have you read Carl Haissen's Skinny Dip ? There's a gritty, disturbed detective in the book. I liked it. When are you supposed to get results from the lyme test? I've got several books on hold including Born a Crime. I've been on hold at two libraries for several months now. I'm #70 on 10 copies and #30 on 2 copies. Edited to fix #s.
  23. I do it a few times a week for the energy I have while fasting. I just feel better when I don't eat a lot.
  24. Hot as Hades. Shhh, don't tell anyone. It's for the Man Hunk on Cover square.
