  1. That was me. I haven't finished it yet. Set it aside when I went on vacation and haven't gotten back to it. Didn't realize it was originally German. Shoot. Oh well. It's the same pretty pictures.
  2. I was happy to see the Iron Druid series listed. Love that series. Waiting for the latest book to be released. Also, is it an indication that I have a 'too many books' problem when I go to put one of the books on my tbr list and Amazon tells me I purchased it several months ago?
  3. I'm listening to Catch 22 and absolutely loving it. This is a classic that I understand why it is one. The problem is I only have an hour left before overdrive whisks it away so I will have to go back on the waitlist.
  4. Yes, our first vacation sans kids since we had kids. Also, yes, theoretically it should be easy for someone to eat gf in Greece. However, that is not the case for most celiacs. I've yet to meet a celiac who does not get sick from cross contamination. When the party you are with gets breadcrumbs into all the food for lack of understanding, despite you trying to explain, you quickly let it go and don't eat. When the waiter says, "Yes, yes, I bring you no gluten" and then brings your utensils wrapped up WITH bread in a cloth then you lose your confidence that you can trust the food. When you see the how the watermelon slices were just cut on the counter covered with breadcrumbs and with the bread knife then you don't eat the melon even though everyone around you thinks you're being dramatic. Same goes for the huge slices of feta cheese....cut with the bread knife. Yeah, just better to not eat. I'm not going to risk losing my vacation just to eat at a restaurant. Not much reading as happened since I've come home. Trying to get the house back in order, had to take ds to the doctor, and jet lag kicked my butt this trip. Both ways. I was a mess for a week in Greece and now I'm a mess at home. Tis not like it was when I traveled in my 20's and jet lag was an unknown to me. I am trying to read John Bunyan but boy my mind is sluggish. I need to check my bingo and see what I need to read to finish by the end of the year. Oh Matryoshka, I finally made it through the 2 weeks worth of mail. Thank you for the book.
  5. Tress, I am very sorry. I hope you find peace.
  6. I'm home again. Life starts full swing tomorrow. Today, I will do things slowly and relaxed. I had a good time but I'm really glad to be home. Greece is not the best place for a celiac; at least not the part I was. I wasn't staying in a place with a kitchen, and I quickly gave up on restaurants so I hadn't had a hot meal for two weeks. I lived off fresh fruit, yogurt, salami, and cheese eaten in my hotel room. Oh, and freddo cappuccino each day. I came home and made a huge pot of gf pasta yesterday and this morning had french toast. There's no happier place for a celiac than her own kitchen. I saw many churches, a convent, and a monastery, lots of ancient ruins, and many beaches. I swam almost every day in the gorgeous Mediterranean. Despite my best efforts I still got a tan. Doesn't matter how much sunscreen you wear when you are in the sun for hours daily. Kids were very happy to see us. Despite all the junk food they consumed at the grandparent's house, they decided they'd rather have mommy back. ;)
  7. I finished The Rosie Effect and started Becoming Brillant. As for the Don Tillman books, I liked them and thought they were funny. However, am I the only one that found Rosie annoying?
  8. You're like the kitten fairy god mother.
  9. I am reading a delicious gem I purchased. It's for my friend I am meeting on vacation. Women Who Read Are Dangerous I couldn't resist reading it myself. I'm only up to pg 29 and wanted to share this, "New canons were rapidly established, based on what was considered acceptable literature, so that women, whose exuberant powers of the imagination are sufficiently well known, should not endanger themselves and their husbands as a result of a pernicious mania for reading." I think I fall into the category of having "a pernicious mania for reading." On the previous page, it says that even in 1800, a new book cost as much as feeding a family for up to two weeks. :svengo: Makes me think twice about cringing at the cost of books I buy.* Of course, there are parts of the world in which a book I buy could feed a family for a week. However, the author is saying that books were that expensive for even upper-class families. *Except for college textbooks. I just had to buy my ds's books for fall. Ouch, ouch, ouch. It's the darn access codes everyone has to have for classes now. :glare: Do you know how much I hate paying $125 for a textbook to be used for 16 weeks and then never again? He's taking 4 classes. :scared: Because of the access codes, you can't even sell the books later as buying an access code alone costs just about as much as buying it in a package with the new book. Unless someone has any secret place they can buy books with access codes cheaper?
  10. What? It's been 3 years already? Did I blink super slowly?
  11. :smilielol5: Although, I was disappointed with Mr. Clemens when I saw what he had said about Jane Austen. Not nice. Yes, I love old movies. I do get shocked/angry/annoyed at times at the blatant racism and sexism in old movies though. It can be difficult to give people a cultural pass over things like that. I like to think that these issues are just common sense and human decency, but forget how culture overrides those two things. I also am leery of biographies. I have heard rumor of Cary Grant. I refuse to delve into his personal life. I want him to be the perfect man for all time. I have read 5 books from 2016. None from 2017.
  12. She showed herself to not be the best example of politeness. Her continued responses turned me off completely. I found it to be quite the example of hypocrisy. VC, be careful with your modern ways. You may find yourself reading this year's New York Times Bestseller. You read up to the 90's and it's a slippery slope from there. I am listening to The Rosie Effect and it is quite fun. This will be my Set in North America book. I finally (!) finished Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens. I am counting this as my Translated book. Still trying to decide what book to take with on vacation. I don't think I will read too much. At least that's the plan. I will be doing a lot of sight seeing. However, I have a long fight there and a long flight back. Plus, I have to read tidbits daily. Gah! Decisions! I am not taking my kindle for various reasons. So it's a harder decision when you are taking hard copy books. We leave Tuesday. Not that I'm counting..... I still have so much to do. Order my ds's textbooks, fill out his SAT paperwork, go to the lab for a repeat test cause they messed it up the first time, get money from bank, make copies of all my papers, buy last minute items for the trip that somehow always seem to creep up, buy enough cat/dog food to last 2 weeks, buy food for kids to take to my parents, get them packed, 2 birthday parties this weekend so I need to get together an animal donation for one party and a side dish/dessert/drinks for the other, make a list for my sister of things to do with the kids and their meds, call doctor's office, buy gifts for the friends we are meeting, drive kids to my parents, pick up rental car, and finally pack. I haven't listed everything like get gas for mower and mow yard right before leaving, but ya'll get the idea. Oh yeah, throw in daily reading and math for my little one. Cause if he goes 2 days without either he loses the ability to do both. I swear his little brain is like a sieve.
  13. Well, I am going through a disappointment. An author whose books I like has seriously disappointed me. I can no longer read her books or blog. I hate it when that happens.
  14. I finished Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution. I tried hard to understand all of it. I think I did. ;)
  15. Are you a Harry Potter fan? For a ginger boy kitty: Fred, George, Ron, Percy, Bill, Charlie, or Weasley.
  16. I did not like American Gods at all. However, I loved Ocean at the End of the Lane and The Graveyard book. Oh, dear. It's okay. I will overlook this flaw. It won't affect our friendship. :D Eliana, welcome back! I hope you have a full recovery.
  17. My local stores where I can get the things I order from Amazon are stores I do not care to support. I'd much rather give my money to Amazon than my options here. Mom and Pop stores usually excluded.
  18. Yes. When I order from any other company I feel like it takes forever to arrive. I start to feel irritated and then wonder at my impatience.
  19. Congrats on 100 books. Wow! Yes, it does seem that there is more graphic violence in books with animal characters. That happened to me with the Gregor the Overlander series on audio. First couple books were ok for my then 6 yr old but then holy moly I had to scramble to shut it off at an unexpected very graphic mass murder scene. My older boys finished the series but my youngest did not. He was not happy with me, but I'm the one who ends up with a little boy sleeping wrapped around my neck all night when he has nightmares. I'm only half way down my cup of coffee, and I thought you wrote Tolstoy's allergy of the beehive. I thought, "Huh, so he was allergic to bees?" I have started Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution by deGrasse Tyson. Riveting confusion so far. ;)
  20. I started listening to Hitch-22 and I had to stop. I could not understand a word being said. I will have to read this book. It will be my "Yellow is Predominate Color of Cover" book. Four Queens is my "royalty" square.
