  1. They are both Seton books More of time v budget constraints I would like to work on both comprehension and test taking skills
  2. Can someone please compare these two for me? Any reviews? I don't want to do both with my 4th grader but not sure which to get
  3. I recently decided to just slow down latin for my 2 (ages 8 and 10), we will spend more than a year in Latina Christiana. I agree with all the other recommendation to just do 20 minutes and go slow if needed
  4. I have often wondered the same thing, miss reading her blog
  5. I would say he is definitely guessing. He will read the first 1/2 of the word and then guess what the second 1/2 may be. Sometimes he guesses based upon context (will read most of word but completely wrong suffix) So, maybe try to the notched card and you would recommend working through rewards rather than ABeCeDarian? In June he tested 3rd grade 8th month on the Woodcock Johnson for brief reading and reading fluency. that is the same score he had a year ago, so worried he isn't progressing
  6. I would say that he struggled with hearing sounds as opposed to holding it in his head. I will take a look at the Barton test
  7. Merry, can you explain a little bit about what you mean about hearing sounds within words?
  8. Thank you for the suggestions. I looked at ABeCeDarian when he was learning to read initially and haven't look at it since. He does guess on other words as well, just not as much. I may be ABeCeDarian a try (Level B Short or Level C) and then do Rewards.
  9. My father was a severe dyslexic and my Aunt and Uncle are mildly dyslexic. Although not officially tested I believe my 10 year old son has some dyslexia. He struggled to learn to read. He is now reading at a end of 3rd grade reading level. He has been stuck at this level for a year. His problem comes with sounding out multi-syllable complex words. He will read part of the word and guess. He struggles sounding it out. I have him read out loud to me, any suggestions on ways to help him? His biggest struggle is spelling. He had a year improvement (according to Woodcock Johnson) on this test this year. However, he is still very behind- more than 2 years. We are 1/2 way done with AAS 3. It is very slow going with slow retention. He will make the same mistake day after day on same words (ex..back for bake) We tried Sequential Spelling without retention. Any suggestions? Keep with AAS since we have progress although very slow and he is behind? Try something else?
  10. I made the mistake of letting my dyslexic 10 year read too much on his own last year. His reading skill pretty much remained stagnant. He could read at grade level and get the main ideas, but wasn't tackling any difficult words. He now reads to me from a chapter book of my choice Mon-Thurs. On Fri he can read what he wants on his own and generally will pick something below his reading level. I have started seeing improvement in his reading already in rhe few weeks he has been reading to me again
  11. Rather than do SM 6, which seems to have very mixed reviews I am considering using a year of a spiral math for some review before heading into pre-Alg. I was looking at both Horizons and CLE. Could we just move into level 6? Any suggestions on these two or other suggestions for a good year of review of key things needed to be successful in pre-alg or algebra? My son is strong in math, but a little ahead (he just turned 10) so I think a year of review would be good rather than rushing him into pre-alg/algebra.
  12. We are doing the Memoria Press tree study this summer and can recommend it!
  13. We do a lot of Memoria Press, but not a lot of workbooks. We do a lot of the history and lit orally or with other writing
  14. Are they the same thing? Both test reading comp? Anyone recommend one over the other? Does the software self grade and advance them based on performance?

  16. Cheryl, Do you feel SWI is better because theere is content in them not included in the theme studies? Why do you think you were successful until you used SWI? Thanks!
  17. I have a friend who is ging to loan me The TWSS DVDs and I thought I would buy the workbook After watching them can my 10yr old start with a theme writing or do we need to do SWI-A? Should my 10 yr old watch TWSS with me?
  18. No, but the topics were simple enough that it was easy to find the answers and get books on the topic. For example, the first two lessons were on spiders. In lesson 2 they want you to research the water the spider, draw it and answer three questions (type of water found it, what it eats and type of web or nest). So for week 1 and 2 we just read a variety of books on spiders from the library and I made sure we had one that talked about water spiders. So, it does take some advance planning on your part, but it is a fun nature study.
  19. We did and enjoyed the Nature Walk with Aunt Bessie . It is not open and go though, it does require outside research/book reading to complete the pages/activities
