  1. This site has definitions of complementarianism if you have time to read through: http://www.cbmw.org/Resources/Articles/Summaries-of-the-Egalitarian-and-Complementarian-Positions I just thought Al Mohler's views of women's roles in gov't was different and interesting compared to the patriarchal views expressed by Phillips and Bauchum.
  2. I've read here Voddie Bauchum and Doug Phillip's (of Vision Forum) patriarchal view of women in gov't. What I haven't read yet is the complementarian view - represented well in this article by Al Mohler. An Unexpected New Motherhood Debate- http://www.albertmohler.com/blog_read.php?id=1521 I agree with this article. I'm thankful for his perspective. My "heart" reaction is to prefer a woman in a different stage of life to pursue this role. For example, a mom with older children or no children. That has been my knee jerk reaction to this, and I'm still sorting through my feelings on the issue.
  3. Has anyone said that? I think most people are concerned with Bristol's crisis pregnancy being played out in the national media bc of her mother's decision to run for VP. The liberal blogs are spewing what you mentioned in your quote. I haven't seen it here. By the way, I have a profoundly disabled son from a genetic disorder. :grouphug:
  4. It wasn't my intention in starting this thread to make anyone upset or sick. I won't read or post on this thread anymore. Thanks for the discussion! It helped me process this news and the implications for the election.
  5. I respect your opinion. I've found this discussion very enlightening however. When I read the headline (and I'm a conservative)- my first reaction was that the election was over. As I've read everyone's supportive replies, I've been amazed that very few shared my reaction. We'll see what happens from here! Have you been reading here long? This is a pretty tame conversation by some standards :)
  6. The fact that she would accept the candidacy while her family is in a crisis, and subject her young daughter to national media scrutiny.
  7. I haven't noticed anyone discussing Bristol Palin's relationships or other gossipy details here. Everyone is being very respectful of her. We are discussing the character of the candidate for VP of the US and the ramifications this released information has on the election.
  8. I don't think many will say she is she's a bad mother bc her daughter got pregnant - so she shouldn't be VP. That isn't it at all. Most everyone has a friend or family member who has gone through this. The timing is the problem. If this happened a year ago or a year from now it would be different. But, her daughter is in a crisis, and she's adding to it by subjecting her to this national media scrutiny. I find it hard to believe any mother would do this. That's why I speculated maybe she just found out after she received the VP nomination. Many teens hide their pregnancies well into the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. I've read since then that Bristol had on a "ring" at the Dayton speech and they had her covered up with the blanket. So, that's unlikely I suppose.
  9. I totally agree with Abbey also. I would add this - I read that the Palin children were surprised by the vp announcement. They thought they were going to a surprise 20th wedding anniversary celebration for their parents -when they were on their way to Dayton. They only found out when they got there. I would go so far as to speculate that perhaps the Gov. and Mr. Palin didn't know this beforehand. As Abbey speculated McCain didn't really know beforehand, although he claims to. I cannot fathom they would throw their 17yo to the national media wolves in this way. Cannot fathom. They must not have known before. That's the only possible explanation in my view. Of course, that means they are ALL lying. I'm depressed.
  10. I definately think it's the right thing have the baby - adoption or raising the child. But, what a gigantic distraction! After all these rumors this weekend. That will be all she's asked about for two months.
  11. AHYS1 includes many fiction recommendations for each historical subject, but I use another program for reading/literature. Christian Light Reading and Veritas {novel} Comprehensions Guides.
  12. My notebook is a basic 1 inch notebook. There are only 2 dividers. 1rst section: SOTW 3 - activity pages and tests. 2nd section: AHYS1 - I am keeping track of all of our spines, readers and read a louds in a word document I will print out at the end of the year. I have tests for A Child's Story of America (not in the TQ guide but simple to add in). I purchased several coloring books. I also have printed about 50 pages of story paper to draw a picture & narrate every reader they finish. Then, I have a Johnny Tremain lit guide in the back of that section. I've also assembled and printed out all of the History Pockets for that era - Explorers, Pilgrims, Colonial and Revolutionary War. They will be our extra crafty projects. Hope these posts are clear - have a child in my lap!! My homeschooled children are ages 9 & 7.
  13. I'm using AHYS1 this year w/ SOTW3. I didn't make a schedule to coordinate them. I went through the TQ guide and marked what my library system had. I then marked and purchased many titles from Amazon and ABE (for some OOP titles). I then purchased spines from Rainbow, Guerber and This Country of Ours. So, I'm just going throught the book using my marked titles from the guide - making sure I order the library titles ahead of time. I will read aloud several picture books and usually one novel along with the spines for each section. We are almost done with the explorers and moving to Roanoke next week. I'm loving it - it's so fun and relaxed this way! For our notebook I have many coloring books and they make a narration/drawing for each reader they finish. The front section of our notebook is for SOTW 3 w/ activity pages. I cover one chapter per week. The two schedules don't line up perfectly chronologically. I'm having so much fun I don't care!
  14. If Veritas sells a wonderful comprehension guide to these sweet books, they can't be all fluff!! ;)
  15. I just read the upcoming profile for People Magazine - she went backstage after her speech to change her baby's diaper before the interview could start. :) http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20222685,00.html Also, did you see this blog post by Doug Phillips of Vision Forum? scroll down to Friday's post: http://www.visionforum.com/hottopics/blogs/dwp/ I'm very traditional. I am also a conservative, pro life, and I love my country. Gov. Palin having such young children is a jaw dropper, but she just seems to me to be a Deborah. This is a unique time, and she seems to me to be a unique woman suited to lead in these times. Just my take, and I respect any other opinions...
  16. I'm making this Barefoot Contessa recipe tomorrow: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/plum-raspberry-crumble-recipe/index.html
  17. Yes! Cindy McCain brought Bridget home from Bangladesh. I think she originally intended to provide for medical care here for a cleft palate. She fell in love with the baby Bridget on the plane home. I've read she said Bridget chose her. Then, she broke the news to her husband and they adopted her. Bridget's now in high school. http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3748634
  18. I watched her come out with her family - and I sobbed... To see the pro life cause displayed so beautifully on the world stage. By someone like her - it is truly amazing. And her oldest son was missing bc he is on his way to Iraq. Money, campaign volunteer - I'll give whatever it takes now.
  19. I'm so glad you posted this! My 7yos is doing terrible too! I guess they can only improve from here :). I think when I've read SOTW aloud in the past, my older daughter has taken the lead for the narration and questions. I haven't really made sure my 7yo could do it because he was our tag a long. This will be his year to "get it".
  20. My children are in 2nd and 4th grades. I've used the math for 2 years. I will continue with the Sunrise edition math until grade 6 or 7 and then move to the Chalkdust program. I began using LA and Reading this year. I will continue those through approx. 7th and 9th grades also and move on to something like Omnibus. I wouldn't consider jumping into this program in the upper grades though. It is very rigorous and builds on itself. I don't think Sunrise math is available in the upper grades yet anyway. Sunrise is far superior to the older lightunits, which are black and white versions of Lifepacs. HTH.
  21. I've been reading vol.1-3 for our year cover US history to 1800. I love it! It's so engaging to read - I love the pics and sidebars. I'm not catching on the liberal bias though. It is more in the 20th c. books? Or am I missing something? I'm really curious bc I've noticed over the years many homeschoolers rail against these books.
