  1. What was the punishment in these theocracies for apostasy? At that point you have someone who I suspect is subject to sharia (as a Muslim) but is no longer, according to the modern western understanding of religion and human rights, a Muslim.

OP, my understanding of sharia, broadly speaking, is a system of prescriptions for behavior founded on Islamic religious belief that seeks to replace or supercede secular law.

I don't think many people care what codes people use to govern themselves in their religious belief or personal life (although we may find some of those codes abhorrent by modern standards, whether Muslim or Christian or whatever), but when a group of people advocates to use those codes to replace secular law in a western society - that is kind of anathema here, imo.

Why we don't want secular laws based on Christianity either. Sharia is not meant to apply to nonMuslims.

  2. I read an easy to understand and hopefully accurate explanation in The Muslim Next Door, written by an American Muslim woman. It covers a lot of the misunderstandings that have been posted in this thread. Good book; I recommend.

  3. I used to wear contacts but developed an allergy that presented like an infection. I wish I could afford lasik. My sister ended up with a similar allergy a couple years after me. She got lasik and has been very happy with it.

  4. Just a thought... if this is a relationship which is becoming more toxic, I would limit time she spends with them. Any established schedules could be cemented later by the courts if she decides to pursue grandparent rights and visitation if you make a change to increase limitations in the event your relationship deteriorates further.

  5. I have a tote bag with the presidents one.  I don't see any reason that we should not be proud of homeschooling and encouraging of educational options that are not public school.  No-one said that all homeschoolers are perfect, but we can still take pride in our choices and accomplishments.

  6. I used mine tonight for only the second time, and made amazing falling-apart tender and flavorful bone-on BBQ ribs in 40 minutes (including sautee, pressurizing, cooking, and quick-venting).

ETA: No Dyson, Meile, Vitamix, or Speed Queen.  But I do have a Bosch Universal (now THAT goes back a few years here!).

  7. You should not even consider refunding her money.  You attempted delivery twice, made arrangements for her to pick up, and now it should be considered abandoned property.  Give her one day notice to come pick it up at your property, and if she doesn't show then quickly donate it.

  8. SNIP

One of these days, TM is going to have to look around and realize that she does not, in fact, know everything.

Or not.  I read an article just yesterday written by a neuroscientist about how some people do not have the mental capacity to develop self-awareness about their own biases and ignorance.  I won't link it because there was political content involved.

While I realize that the debate provides another perspective for silent lurkers, we just keep going around and around these same arguments ad nauseam.  The provocative thinking happened earlier in the thread and now we've come to the inevitable infinite irrationality, as always.  I honestly don't know why you all continue to feed the troll.

  9. I am sorry, but as the daughter of an alcoholic, this is a TERRIBLE idea. I understand the state needs revenue but you should just do what Delaware does and tax the living daylights out of I-95 (what is that toll up to now? $15?) and tax a bit of I-93. That would do the same thing without saying to people that it is okay to drink and drive in your state. What is at your rest stops says something about you as a state. Florida hands out Orange Juice. New Jersey (where I am), we tax you heavily (though per mile not as bad as Delaware), however we also offer service areas so you can "Git outa' here!" quickly without getting off an exit and finding food, gas (that is at a lower tax rate then the surrounding states), and a restroom.

It's not a rest stop.  It's a state liquor store with a gas station and restaurants.  We have rest stops that don't have any amenities other than bathrooms.  People can buy alcohol anywhere and still know that it is illegal to drink and drive.

I am also the daughter of an alcoholic, and I'm very sure that liquor stores in places convenient to traveling tourists are not the cause of the alcoholism.

  10. Microwaves - who wants soggy food?

Teflon pans - NEVER works as good as they claim. Flakes off in food.

Bread machines - I have yet to hear of one that works great every time.

Bags that have built in chargers for electrical devices - So you can't carry food and the bag magically stays clean??

This isn't a gadget but why are there rest stops in NH that sell alcohol?? Why do they think that is a good idea??

Oh that water device for a baby that wraps around a baby's neck and is filled with air. So then the baby floats there suspended by the head.  (Yes this exists... google it!)

The sign that says "braille menus available upon request" that are located in the drive through windows of fast food places.

ETA - Open kitchens - I have a closed kitchen (European is what I call it) and it keeps the heat in there! Love it!

I have a IP. Use that thing at least once a week. I also have a Vitamix. I don't use it as much as I used to, but it is vital for being Paleo. I also have a KA mixer. That thing I think would make a great anchor for a boat. Yeah I hate that thing, but it works so I am dealing. Oh and I have a toaster oven. It is great for heating up things when you don't use your microwave and don't want to use the big oven. ;)

There is no income or sales tax in NH, so the state needs to raise revenue somehow.  The liquor stores in NH are owned by the state as a source of revenue; you can't buy liquor (excluding beer & wine) in any other store in the state.

For instance, in 1986 New Hampshire liquor industry revenue was $160 millionMaine currently loses $30 million in liquor sales to NH each year, probably mostly from the Portsmouth store on Interstate 95.  Those big ones on Interstate 93 take in $40 million per year.

There are small local stores, but a lot of tourists pass those large ones on the highway and stop to pick up liquor for their vacation (skiing, camping, leaf peeping from B&B, etc.) or to bring home on the way back from vacation.  They aren't encouraging people to crack open the bottle as soon as they get back in the car.

  11. You probably need a ditch filled with gravel (French drain) on the upslope side of the driveway, and some grass and/or plants above that to keep dirt from washing into the gravel and clogging it.

I'd also talk to the neighbors, because I think they may be liable for property damage caused by water running off their property.  http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/neighbor-disputes-over-water-damage-29724.html

  12. I had actually been wanting a pressure cooker for a long time, but didn't know of a reputable brand.  The fact that people have been raving about the brand, and there are all these wonderful recipes out there, just sealed the deal when the price was right.  And now I see that I can use it as a slow cooker/rice cooker/yogurt maker, so I don't need to get any of those gadgets in the future.

  13. Juicers.  Because veggie juice tastes nasty and juicers are very expensive and so hard to clean that in my world they would not be used.  Except citrus juicers, which are a subset that is easy to use and clean with a great product at the end.

Asparagus vertical steamers.  Because once it's a bit limp asparagus needs support.  Plus you can't use them for anything else, and who has that much asparagus?

Metal corn on the cob eaters.  Because they cleverly transmit the heat from the cob DIRECTLY to your hand, burning it.  So you have to wrap them in napkins anyway.

Thin pot holders that you can get burned through.  Uh, no.

One size fits all pantyhose.  Because it doesn't.

We have that much asparagus, but don't like it steamed.  My mom used to boil it - yuck.

    Agree with the rest.
