We live in a part of NH where there is almost no cultural diversity.

I would like take a family into my home if it would save them from that horrible war. But that's not allowed in the resettlement rules.

I picked up some stacking file crates to organize my chest freezer. They have big holes in the sides and bottom to let the air through.

I have an all-in-one copy/print/fax/scan. It did not cost much more than a plain printer, and I use all of those functions all the time.

Vermont (a stone's throw from here) just changed the name of the holiday last week. I'd be quite happy for NH to do the same.

Why not keep them in the ground until you want to use them? They get sweeter with time. Just put a deep layer of leaf or sawdust or shavings on top and dig them out throughout the winter.

We have a general club where we do a wide range of different projects, some different ones each year. The only clubs that are project-specific in NH are animal projects.
Right now we're doing robotics. Next will be cooking.

I can teach beginning piano, but it's always the first thing to fall by the wayside when life gets busy, so about four years ago I hired out piano. Our teacher does 1/2 hour lessons for $10 weekly.
Dd picked up harp last winter and we travel an hour round trip every other week for $40/1 hour lesson.
The kids practice their instruments for at least 20 minutes per day per instrument, and have made great progress. I let them have one day off per week from practice, their choice.

OK, I am not super crafty myself but I spent part of my afternoon looking through these rug hooking projects! SO stinking cute! (I'm doing locker hooking rather than latch hook, btw. They are a bit different.) I'm going to make coasters because we need some. There are YouTube videos on how to do this, too.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/DesignsInWool?ref=l2-shopheader-name§ion_id=7826694 This shop has both patterns and whole kits.
This is the YouTube video I watched and learned something new! I like how "locker hooking" uses fabric to create rounded "nubs" rather than loose yarn...
This is not an easy project for young children. I took a leaders' workshop in rug hooking (not latch hook) alongside my teen a few years ago and it was challenging for both of us.

We chose the Samsung Galaxy S5 for many of the reasons noted here:
* battery is easily replaceable
* unlocked Verizon version works on our Tracfone accounts with an easy SIM card - great service, great coverage
* also has GSM if we ever want to change providers/move to a different coverage area
* decent camera (not its top priority, but useful in a pinch)
* not the newest model so the price has come down
We've been very happy with them.

There are plenty of bad cops who still manage to not kill anyone. They just harass them, beat them up, rough them up, unnecessarily employ taser and pepper spray against unarmed and non-aggressive people with the slightest provocation...
We had an officer like that a couple towns over who kept bullying the same local guy over and over again until the guy snapped and killed him. But the news only wanted to report that the officer was a hero who died in the line of duty, not the history that led to the deaths.
ETA: Local people blocked the highway being renamed in honor of the officer.

A FB friend posts a new video or news story about a new episode of police brutality and militarization just about every day.

I appreciate it. It allows me to know who I should avoid patronizing in the future.

Correct. The murder rate in NYC has continued down since the new mayor, and since ending stop and frisk.
That the national rate is up is a separate statistic, and a recent one.
The national rate is up due largely to Chicago.

BTDT, got the t-shirt. Get a portable dishwasher. And put DH in charge of either the dishes OR the laundry.

Since most people classify gummies/fruit snacks as candy, I am curious as to where you find them in your local grocery store.
Our local Walmart has fruit snacks in the cereal aisle next to the granola bars. The candy aisle is a few rows over and the gummy bears and worms are there but no fruit snacks.
Our Hy-Vee (grocery store) also has them in the cereal aisle tucked over by the boxed juices and Kool aid packets. The candy aisle is close by but the fruit snacks are not stocked with the candy.
Not with the fruit.

Thanks everyone!
DD is looking for a way to make extra money. There's not much work for 11yo girls around here - she's still too young to babysit. We live in a rural area and don't have any near neighbors, so I will be driving her/helping. This sounds like a hassle, but really I drive all my kids to work and back before they are old enough to drive themselves. So, the pet owner will be getting both dd and me, really. She has taken the initiative to make up a poster, and we'll see what happens. You have all confirmed my ideas about pricing, so thank you!

I haven't read the other responses.
High school is not something you just jump in and out of. There are rules for earning credits in public high schools, and often length-of-enrollment rules for graduation on top of that. In NH some school districts are more willing to award credits for homeschool work, and others will require students to repeat whole years.
We encourage our own 8th graders to look at all of their high school options and make a four-year decision. We make four year mock schedules based on each school's course offerings and the interests of the student. We compare all of them to each other, and to the long-term goals of the student. So far all of my kids have decided to stay home for high school so that they can pursue their own interests, or specialize, more fully than time would allow were they in an institutional school setting. For one kid that meant they earned 30 college credits before they graduated from our homeschool. For another means they will pursue a trade/apprenticeship program.
If I had a kid who was already into the high school years and wanted to change placement I would have a serious discussion about the reasons for that desire. We would do our best to accommodate whatever needs were being unmet in the current placement before actually pursuing an alternative placement, and then we would not be as open to changing it again. IMO&E, these are not the years to be flippant with placement changes as they can really affect the long term opportunities afforded to a person.

My dd is registered with care.com. Most jobs I see listed are in the $10 and up per visit range.
Ah, they won't let her register because she's too young.
