  1. I just found out that Essentials In Writing has a HS Creative Writing course. :thumbup1:
  2. Ah, well, we can bang heads together, then! :grouphug: You make excellent points, thank you! :grouphug: I'm taking your advice to heart and this plan has already started today. (AND, she completed 2 of the lessons on fractions getting 100%! ) Anyway, DD has such a strong personality that I need to be so firm with her and it is sooooo hard for me at times. I really needed here this. :blushing: Thanks, mamas!! :grouphug:
  3. Have you viewed this course in its entirety? I'd love to hear from someone who's used it! :) I wouldn't recognize these things you mention. Not at all. After floating through 10 schools and zero history in college, I'd be clueless about any bias. Well, unless its in your face obvious. ;) Cathy Duffy just gave an interesting review of this course. ( Btw, I'm neutral to her opinion.) Anyway, I also was looking at this today, and it seems crazy good; engaging, states that the presentation of worldviews/ideas/people/actions is focused on developing critical thinking & comprehensive.
  4. Thanks, Starr. I agree she needs to nail her basic math. I'm just not sure an entire level is needed. She gets insanely bored with the stuff she already knows. Sigh. At any rate, Lial's is a no-go for her. She cannot deal with the dense text. As for the testing, I'll keep talking to her, but she is so overly frustrated that right now isn't going to happen. Sigh again. Thanks... :grouphug: Elizabeth, I know I shouldn't be rushing her. Thing is, she is the one who wants to move forward. That is why she insisted on taking the TT Algebra 2 placement. :glare: She gets so intense at this point! Okay, so TT maybe isn't the right approach for shoring up her gaps and strengthening her overall skills. So I ask, WHAT :willy_nilly: should I use that will give her this type of instruction and practice? Just this week I bought a text called, Basic Algebra (so darn cheap!) upon a glowing review here on WTM (correlano/Jackie :D ) and she likes the clear and thorough explanations as well as the layout (which is important! ;) ) BUT, she feels like she is taking several grades backwards to stop TT and instead, wrk through this book. I am tempted to try Saxon, because of the review, but what a RISKY chance that would be! Wouldn't it?? Then I think, what about a program like ALEKS? :banghead:
  5. This is part of a xpost here and on SL forums..I've snipped quite a bit.....UPDATE AT THE END..... This is in regard to our 16yo 10th gr dd, who is a 2e sweetheart. She can't stand labels, but to give a clear picture, here they are. Gifted,ADD, Anxiety & Panic Disorder, suspected LD-she is refusing testing at this point. ..... One, is that I did way too much curriculum hopping. Oddly, when DD spent her 7th grade year in public school, math was incredibly easy for her there-and she was in the gifted classes! When she returned to homeschooling, I mistakenly assumed she was ready for Algebra, because that is what her teacher suggested! I wish I would have had her take a placement test THEN, instead of trying Algebra and experiencing an epic failure with it. What I should have done, is place her into Pre-Algebra and had her take her time, building that strong foundation. But, I didn't. Secondly, with her confidence taking a nose dive, I then tried this, then that program, trying to get her back on her feet. In hindsight, my pride was getting in the way, as I was told how gifted she was, not just by friends and family, but teachers and child psychologists also. What I didn't know until recently, is that people who are gifted often have learning disabilities. Now, we do suspect that some learning challenge is present.....<<<<< ****UPDATE**** DD's been working through TT Algebra 1 (current ed) and has tested out to ch. 7. She's gotten some low scores, but this was due to her FLYING through her work, not showing her work, being distracted, etc..The MAJORITY of her scores have been mid 80's thru 100%. She was not able to pass the chapter test for #7 and from what I can see, her problem is fractions, word problems and factoring. At HER request, she JUST retook the placement test for TT Algebra 2 and missed placing BY ONE POINT. FYI-She is planning on attending college, majoring in Business. Just this week she decided she doesn't want to follow through with testing for abilities, though she'll reconsider in the fall. (We already had the evals scheduled.) She is worried to death about the ACT/SAT. Now, I'm not sure if we should continue with TT Algebra 1, or stop and shore up her knowledge of fractions, etc..Maybe thru ALEKS?? Then continue with________?? She does NOT want to continue with TT Algebra 2. She wants a curriculum with crystal clear explanations. She is easily overwhelmed by page/screen layouts. Well, bless your heart if you read this far! ;) Any advice/suggestions/BTDT?? Throw me a bone! :toetap05:

  7. Lori, thanks so much!! :grouphug: :grouphug: Now, does anyone have experience with the above resources?
  8. My apologies, my search efforts are not producing productive results! :glare: Any reviews or suggestions for either a Career Survey-type course or a Study Skills-type course for an elective? TIA! ETA: this is for a HS student with ADD.
  9. Good to know, thanks! Cynthia, these courses are on sale right now. I've never bought TGC before, do you know if they expire once you've bought them? Thanks!
  10. I'd forgotten about OYAN. Thanks for the reminder! She does have a blog, so maybe she would like the Nano...Thanks! Ill check into this, thanks! Oh, my, I should have known about this since she's doing LL this year; I'm sure I've skimmed right over it several times. :tongue_smilie: Thank you! ~~~~~~ Excellent ideas!
  11. My current 10th gr dd is interested in taking a Creative Writing course, possibly starting over the summer. (Just a .5 credit course.) I'm hoping to find a course that is affordable, comprehensive and can be completed independently. ;) Thanks so much!
  12. Has anyone taken this Algebra 1 course from The Great Courses or the Algebra 2 course? The instructor is Professor James Seller. The reviews are excellent, but one reviewer stated the Algebra 1 isn't a complete course. (??) I'm also wondering if these courses would be good for a bright, but struggling math student? Thanks.....
  13. This looks amazing and incredibly affordable! I'm curious about how long per day your ds spends on this? ((Thank you!!))
  14. Hello, I'm curious to know what you decided to do? Also, which Algebra 1 course was your ds working through? TIA!
  15. I really appreciate this link. Thank you! We meet with a psychologist next week and were told it would last about 2-3 hrs. Yikes! I'm glad to have this info as I'm now feeling somewhat informed to ask intelligent questions. (Thanks, OP :grouphug: )
