  1. Thought a few of you and any advanced middle and high school students might like this new Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WhatDoEngineersDo There's a variety of links daily that get you thinking and learning something new. Posted this earlier, but edit to mention what it was actually about on the title line didn't show up. WAS: Shut the front door, two posts in one day!
  2. I tear the edges of my toenails off while I read. I finish up for the day and - huh - there's a little pile there. I am a pedicurist's worst nightmare.

  4. Thanks for the link. I'll go check it out right away. Love, love, love sharing resources and internet finds.
  5. There is a link on the side to subscribe to updates via email, if you don't use a feed reader. I should have mentioned that. I'm all about making things easier.

  7. I hope that someone else can put the links, etc to good use as well. Happy homeschooling!
  8. who are using or considering either the Holt Biology: Visualizing Life or Prentice Hall: Physical Science Concepts in Action (with or without the Earth and Space Science component) textbooks. I love science and find it fascinating, but it's not my background ("Boys and girls, can you spell English and Counseling Degrees?") so I'm scouring the Internet daily for relevent materials to clarify these topics for our son, The Padawan Learner. It occurred to me that, since I'm keeping a log of our daily lessons online at The Jedi Academy so PL can start work independently as needed and for future transcript needs, there might be people on these forums who would be interested in following along as well - and saving themselves the effort (and occassional hair-pulling) of duplication. Generally, I try to find materials and videos online, but I also include a few Netflix movies. Those resources fall more frequently in the History category, but there are a few science-related ones that we've put in our queue. They could, perhaps, be found through your local library, or simply ignored, depending on the library system's depth and breadth. So... if you're interested, you're welcome to follow along - either this year or in the future. To science! (Note: links repaired)

  10. Padawan Learner, 15, started his Freshman year this year and is taking two classes that were of interest to him at the local Public School. Homeschooling, in all its forms, should promote the best education for a student - not just its location. If you believe you will be better educated in a few subjects at the local PS, then you owe it to yourself to seriously consider them. Fear of the unknown is no reason to reject what may be a superior educational opportunity. Best wishes to you!
  11. as portrayed by my husband (Dad Windu) several Halloween's ago - in a costume I made. Padawan Learner's costume was as Anakin Skywalker.
  12. Dad Windu was hoping there was more there. We'll look into what's around at Fort Dodge and see if it's worth the stop. I think the Pony Express route sounds cool. I'll keep that little noose fact in the back of my mind... eeks!
  13. This is a shout-out to anyone that has been a traveler to, or resident near, places that were once part of the Wild West. For the past nine months or so, my husband - Dad Windu - has thrown himself into learning about the people and places from this unique period in American history, particularly Wyatt Earp and his ilk. Padawan Learner and I briefly covered this time period at the end of last year and are revisiting it again early this year, so it is a fortunate merging of interests. BUT we're not very familiar with the SW part of the US at all so we're looking for some help. If you're interested in throwing your 2 cents in about must see places and sites, please go see the post I wrote about it a few days ago and let us know what you think. I was sitting here reading the forums and thought, "Well, duh, the WTM'ers will know what to do!" Many thanks in advance.
  14. Stuff is really flying off the list. :) I'm glad that people are/were interested in some of the extra things I've been finding in my recent culling of the herd.
  15. Sorry if I confused you (and I'm glad you found the blog interesting).
  16. Please PM me from the WTM site if you're interested in any of things on my blog. It appears that there's a delay in getting email from my server today.
  17. I don't know where else to put this so I'm posting it here. I've got some free things listed on my blog, on the page called Watto's Junk Shop. It's a hodgepodge of things - homeschooling books, books my son (Padawan Learner) read, knitting patterns, car organizer, and I forget what else. I do take things down as people request them. Times are tight right now for a lot of people, so I'm hoping to pass along some of the kindness and generousity that I've experienced through the years from fellow homeschoolers. My only requests are 1) request things that you think you'll actually use - not for resale or "Maybe we'll use it someday" storage - and 2) pass them along to someone else when you are done with them. Best wishes to you all for a fabulous homeschooling year.
  18. He was 13 when he read them and blew through them all in days. The earlier responder hit the nail on the head: James Bond for kids.
  19. And my son takes after him. I am frequently doing the pushing down motion with my son, that works really well for him, but I have to remind my husband at least once a day that "We're all right here, honey." My best advice is to find a hand motion you can both agree on and practice, practice, practice that voice modulation. Sorry, I know it's not much but I really do believe it can be learned.
  20. "The dark side of the Crock Pot is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural." - Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith Like mixing Velvetta and salsa in a mini-crock, giving your kids a bag of tortilla chips, and calling it dinner.
