  1. Does anyone know of where I can see an example of Saxon K math? I can't find one on their site.
  2. It seems that when I read posts that people who love Saxon hate Singapore and vice versa. They don't really compare saxon vs MUS. I love the idea of those who love Saxon use it because it is very thorough, goes through calculus, and the kids using is usually test above their grade level. But those who hate it complain that it's too much repetition and it's boring. So I guess my question is why do you like/dislike Saxon? (isn't is spiral?) I though I'd made my mind up but now I'm questioning. I have a preschooler next year I wanted to start in Saxon k so I want to figure this out. Why do you like/dislike Singapore? (is singapore mastery?) Thanks you so much for you input.
  3. My daughter has really loved reading eggs but our free trial has just ended. I'm not sure I want to continue to pay for something we'll never own. So I was wondering if you know of any computer programs like reading eggs you can buy. One that is a nice as reading eggs. I have 2 daughters and we'll be using it for a long time. If I add up all the monthly charges it would take if my daughter used reading eggs for a couple years each that add up to $$$$$. More than I have. So I'm looking for a reading/phonics program that: plays like a game like reading eggs Has good graphics and mouse control and most of all really fun. Suggestions? My daughter loves reading eggs and begs to play it. I want to find something that will get that response from her.
  4. That'll be a lot of fun. I'd love to do this when my kiddos get older. Maybe in a few years.
  5. Great link! Very helpful. It's been great to read how everyone works their lesson like. Thanks everyone.
  6. So my kids are two years apart. When my youngest is in K my older will be 2nd. I'm wondering when my youngest gets into K if you can teach them together using the suggested 4 year rotation the outline in the book? I know that you'd keep them at their appropriate level in math and grammar, but what about history and science? I imagine teaching different history would be both time consuming and confusing (oh my part that is). So say that you can, is there somewhere someone has put together a chart or schedule that they've done or followed in implementing this? It would be really neat if I could combine for some of their subjects so that I could spend more time on it and not feel rushed so I can teach both kids. Anyone done this and want to share their schedule also?
  7. If you want to start teaching Latin what grade do you start? What are your favorite Latin curriculum or books to teach? and why
  8. We are planning on starting next fall with Kindergarten. After doing way too much research I've decided to give Saxon a try. Though I haven't tried it yet I'll tell you why I'm giving it a try. Oh and we might skip k and go to 1st because I think she already mastered her k math stuff. From the reviews I've read and the posts I've listed I've concluded that it's very thorough and is spiral program. Meaning it will continue to review learned topics so that you will not forget it.I also like how they use manipulative's with their teaching to help with the visual learners. I like how it covers k-12. It's a book that's been around for a long time and seems to have been proven. some have complained that it has too many questions to complete per lesson, but i think you just choose to do what you want with your kids. I really want to give my kids a firm math foundation. I think Saxon will do that. and in the unfortunate event we have to put them in ps, I know they will be at least to grade level if not further.
  9. :iagree:We've got a good start on our library already. It's great my kids spend more time looking through books than they do with some of their toys. :001_smile:
  10. I've been working with my 4.5 year old and am using I see sam books. Next year we're planning using I see sam, Explode the Code, and OPGTR. As I've been teaching my daughter to read I've noticed that my daughter is starting to guess her words. I have really encouraged phonics so I'm not sure what to do. I really want to help her be a very good reader. At 4.5 she's doing really well. I understand she is young, but I'd like to continue our lessons. What would you suggest to help with phonics? And to raise a good reader? Note: We are already ready a lot every day.
  11. I should have added Beast Academy but there wasn't any more space to add and I wanted to have a other-specify place so I could see others I haven't thought of before.
  12. How much do you need so spend to get free shipping?
  13. As you probably just saw I posted a question about Latin I've been thinking about a foreign language. What age would you recommend starting something like Spanish? What programs have you tried for your kids that worked really well? And what age did you start them?
  14. Can someone please explain why teach Latin? And what grade is recommended we start that in WTM?
  15. So I've been reading the Well trained mind but have really only read for the kindergarten age. It's really simple at this age. I had to borrow the book and had to take it back. I plan on buying the book but for now I wanted to know: What exactly is classical style? I know that it changes and is different from k once you start 1st. Simply put how does one implement the classical style once 1st starts? (using WTM) What is your scheduled school days like for elementary years? I'm still trying to figure out what style we'd like to use. Thanks for all your help.
  16. Thanks These are great. A mild layed back entry into formal schooling will be great.
  17. Thanks this is a great list of blogs to skim through. Wonderful!
  18. After reviewing what is taught in saxon k I think we'll be using Saxon 1. The only reason I would think of trying saxon k is to skim through it for anything we might have missed. I have a 2 year old that could use it in a year so if we didn't really use it we could use it for her.
  19. I guess it's like any curriculum's out there. Either you love it or hate it. It seems like something I'm willing to try because of the positive comments I've received. If you have any more insight I'd be grateful to read thim.
  20. I agree with just following your childs lead. We'll be starting k next year even though my daughter will be 4 turning 5 in November. I have what i want to try picked out and plan to go at the speed my daughter wants. If she's not wanting to do school I won't push her, but if she wants to move faster I'll go with that.
  21. It's scary isn't it? I'm planning our first year of k4/k5. I believe I've been picking some really great curriculum and have stayed away from the really expensive one's, but it still all up. Is is crazy to spend $400 on k4/k5? My husband thinks it is. lol.
  22. Thanks everyone. I'll have to looking into the what each book covers in the Saxon k and 1 books. The K book might be too much review for her. Thanks for your advice.
  23. That's funny. I guess I'm a sucker for forums.
