  1. That's a good idea. Thanks. Ironically, we had a conversation about this very thing yesterday. She brought it up. :) I told her I would help her and she had some pretty good ideas for completing her current project (collecting small "pets" in jars) and researching them and how to care for them. She's going to put together a book. :)
  2. I sort of remember a discussion about this recently (here?) so if it's a repeat I apologize! dd (9) has all these great projects going (on her own) and I see parts and pieces of these things around the house and watch them begin to take shape and think, wow! that's cool! and then her interest and her work on the projects peters out. I don't really care that she doesn't "finish" any one thing, since these are all her own ideas and creations, but I DO think it's important for her to see some of them through to fruition (whatever SHE thinks that might be). Am I making sense? I also know that the first step in helping her follow through would be to encourage her (and I do) but she seems to get obsessed with one thing after another and each for only a short period of time. I'd love ideas that you have used to keep your gifted kid interested in what they started so that they can follow through with one of their great ideas and take pride in their completed project.
  3. Can you hook him up with any adults who are amateur scientists? In our area there are lots of amateur astronomers and link up with the professionals at our nearby observatory. They meet on a regular basis and I plan on getting dd (8) involved this fall. These adults LOVE to mentor kids. Here birding is a big thing too - and dd was once VERY interested in that. I wish I had hooked her up with a club back then. I think the hands-on mentoring approach is terrific. It helps build community and satisfies the needs of our kids and the needs of the volunteers. I plan to search out some more for my science-minded dd as time goes on.
  4. My post is all set to publish on the 19th. I'm looking forward to reading everyone's thoughts and ideas. :)
  5. I agree about starting with one at a time. I bought the entire 7-9 (I think that was the one) and I ended up selling several units and getting the next level up because we just didn't use it all before my girls outgrew it. There is a yahoo group for MBTP and you can buy used there for good prices. :)
  6. Thanks! I think I do too. That's the one it will be then. I posted a little teaser on my website tonight. :)
  7. Looks great! Okay, I will see if I can get this together. I thought I had to post it today which was not going to happen! :tongue_smilie: My title will be "Listen Up, and Let Your Child Lead!" or something to that effect. :) Okay, which one sounds best? It's about how to let the child lead and stop getting in your own way. Get Out of the Way and Let Your Child Lead Get Out of Your Own Way: How to Listen to the Needs of Your Gifted Child Listen Up! Your Child Knows Best ???? any other ideas?
  8. So I'm totally not ready for this and I'm going to have to step down. Sorry! I look forward to reading all of your posts though! :001_smile:
  9. Okay, thanks! I'll get working on it too. Do we have any kind of deadlines?
  10. My dd (8) and I had a breakthrough last night and I'd like to write about it. My post would be about how (as a teacher and a homeschool mom) I am learning to listen to the needs of my gifted dd (which I don't always understand) and get out of my own way! Along the lines of David Albert's idea of "dismantling your inner school." Not very succinct right now, but hopefully you get the point. I haven't read all the responses yet, so how does this work? I'd write the post for my own blog and then link to others? :) I will read the rest of the posts later and try to figure it out but have to run now. . . ETA: Oh, I see this might be all set. Let me know if I'm not too late. I would post on my blog to begin with. Link at bottom of page. :)
  11. LESS! Way, way, way less. Both girls, but especially my youngest. <sigh> I don't even like remembering it. :tongue_smilie:
  12. Me too! I found out about it here and immediately applied! I want to get picked too. Me! Me! Pick me!
  13. I only applied a couple of hours ago. I hope I get picked! How long did it take for everyone to find out?
  14. Thank you for sharing that experience. I had considered joining a group this year but I was concerned about whether or not they'd "allow" my daughters to move on past their peers. I'm sorry that happened. I have found this to be true as well.
  15. We are in a similar groove here too. I consider it a "math block". :001_smile:
  16. ha! I understand too. My girls outgrow curriculum faster than they outgrow clothing, and I thought THAT was too often.
  17. LOVED this book! Poppy is a very fun book to read aloud.
  18. Thank you! I bookmarked this for later. :001_smile:
  19. I have been looking at it for a while. I REALLY don't need to buy anymore curriculum! Or do I? . . .
  20. We are new to it and only plan on using it once a week so I know it will take us a while to get through.
  21. FL is super friendly. Most counties are too (with small exceptions). Let me know if I can help you! See the link in my siggy.:001_smile:
  22. We work with a DAN! doctor - he has helped both my girls. My eldest dd no longer has her tics. Can you find one in your area? Ours is actually out of state - we do phone consults with him.
