  1. Thank you Laura and clwcain!! I now know who to ask my history trivia. :) Much appreciated. Wish I was as learned as you two. Perhaps after I learn with dc!!!
  2. ds12 worked through Mind Benders A1-4 in the fall. Then I gave him Fallacy Detective. He reads a chapter and then we discuss review questions. We enjoy it. Dry sense of humor. Ds12 even turned on the Parliament channel to listen to the ministers (like US congress?!) argue. He wanted to see if he could find any fallacies. LOL!
  3. Okay..to simplify.:) We are studying SOTW3 Late Ren/Early Mod. I am Canadian and I wanted to add a little here and there, but I can't seem to find certain things I want.:bored: Dc colored an Englishman and a Frenchman in 18th century costume and I wanted them to draw the coordinating flags. (We are leading up to England vs. France in Canada.) I just don't know if it is Union Jack for England or St. George's Cross. And is it tricolor for France or three fleur-de-lis on blue ?! Can you help?
  4. I guess I know even less about flags than I first thought! How about national flags and flags on explorers ships? Only now that I have found a friend who knows their flags...I want England, France, Spain, Sweden and Holland.:) Please :)
  5. Which flags would be flying during late renaissance and early modern? I am especially interested in England and France.
  6. Has anyone else checked out http://www.thenarniaacademy.org.?
  7. I have a small collection of coins and bills. I found plastic sheets with slots made for currency at my local Christian book store. Three bills or twenty coins per page. The sheets fit in a regular 3 ring binder. You could probably find some at a hobby store.
  8. Hi! I came to the hive May 14 so I am just learning how to get around. I have four dc and each one learns totally differently!! I knew that each of my dc would be different, but I was not prepared.. I wanted to hs since ds12's birth. He began at 4 yr reading and traditional hs workbooks (ACE independent learning). He has excelled and is self-taught in almost every area. He even surpassed me in animal science. I started classical studies with him when he was in gr2. DD10 learned to read last year. Phonics was a tearful struggle. She does not know digraphs, etc. She is at gr2 level (my opinion). I have never had any of my children evaluated or tested. She loves to sing and has started to sing in our church this year. She enjoys baking and paper crafts. Ds8 does not seem to have desire to learn. He would rather draw. His artist skills have surprised me and others. He was drawing his Hotwheels in 3D from bird's eye view at age 4. He reads at gr1 level and is quickly catching up to dd10. Ds6 is learning his letter sounds with no problem. He is constantly asking me "What does that say?" We do history reading, coloring and map work together. Ds12 does additional work alone. We do nature study and science experiments together. We also have Bible reading and memory together. I do not have a hs support group. The hsers I do know that live close to me only have young children and teach with consumable workbooks. Any advice or prayers would be appreciated. Thanks.
  9. I love love love Lego and my dc like it too!!:) Thanks for information from cool site. My question is...how DO you store your Lego and instruction books?
  10. I am not sure how to get dx...private, gov't, school board, medical... Maybe I could get all four assessed? Deep down I am worried that "they" will say I cannot hs her any longer.:(
  11. Cross-stitch is fun and easy. Aida cloth and large needle. Even little guy can make a line of x's. Pre-printed kits are much easier to start with than counted deisgn. You could start on a Christmas tree ornament collection! I am also partial to crochet. Doll blankets for dd and long chains for ds.
  12. My ds12 is an excellent reader and has virtually self-taught every subject. My precious dd10 has great difficulty. She learned to read last year at age 9. From K to gr 3 we worked on phonics and reading. This year she has worked on Pathway readers level 2, Spelling Workout A, Rod and Staff 2, and Canadian Handwriting C (transition). We study history and science together as a family. She is easily distracted during read-aloud and frequently falls asleep!! She is such a sensitive soul living in this house full of boys..gets upset and cries if doesn't understand lesson. My ds8 is right behind dd10...by three lessons in R&S and SWA. This is hard for her self-esteem, but I can't hold him back..that's not fair to him! He is an awesome sketch artist and would rather not do lessons. Motivationally challenged, I guess. My ds6 is happily learning his phonics and constantly asking "What does that say?" I was wondering if anyone had advice for me? I find it difficult to get a workable schedule as dd10 and ds8 require two hours one-on-one time (one hour math and one hour language). With chores and history and fun time outside I run out of hours in the day!!
  13. The family went to see Prince Caspian and had a great time!! I want to reread the book, too. My favorite character from reading has been Reepicheep and I was not disappointed! :) I can't wait until The Dawn Treader!! And then The Silver Chair!! My absolute favorite character is Puddleglum..I shouldn't wonder. Even more than Reepicheep..shh don't tell him. We borrowed the CDs by Focus on the Family from the library and enjoyed them as a bedtime reading. We have also seen some of the BBC videos. But computer animation is somethin' else!
  14. This was ds12 first year in logic stage. We study history together as a family, so he had continued grammar style like his siblings. This month I bought KHE and we started outlines and timelines. Could you give more info on how your dc do their notebooks? The timeline especially frustrates me as ds12 and I cannot seem to get it right. We are on SOTW3 and will continue this book through summer and next year.
  15. This year ds12 ventured into the logic stage. In my circle of homeschool friends I am the only Classical Gal. Many questioned why I would want Latin or how I would do it. We use Latin for Children A. Every week ds12 begins a new chapter. He watches the DVD first. Children chant with him and then he has a teacher go over the grammar with him. It is so nice to have someone besides Mom teach him things. I do not have any background in Latin so ds12 sees that Mom can learn with him. Also it is nice to have a male teacher. He uses a white board and gives a little lecture. Ds12 asked me if that was what teachers do in "real" school. I am glad he has the opportunity to see different teaching methods from the comfort of the couch! Oh I must not forget ds12's favorite part of the DVD!! Interviews with the children and a puppet show with Latin words. To sum up..I don't think Latin would have worked for us without the DVDs!
  16. This was ds12's first year in logic stage. (Mine, too!) He was introduced to Latin and logic. We study SOTW3 as a family. I am still not quite sure how to adjust between him and younger grammar children. (dd10,ds8,ds6) Ds12 uses Kingfisher Encyclopedia of History to outline. I have not succeeded in a timeline! I would like some advice and photos too. I just do not know to start. I enjoy scrapbooking and stamping with dc. Does anyone use that in timelines? Please help:confused:
  17. Hello! I am new to Hive. I am homeschooling ds12,dd10,ds8 and ds6 in rural NS, Canada. Any ideas for Canadian history content? We are using SOTW3. So far I added extra about Champlain, Huron and Iroquois, coureur de bois, Maisonneuve, and Beothuk. It is difficult to find coloring pages, historical fiction, etc. What are my fellow Canadians using?
