  1. MIF Course C or AOPS Prealgebra? Or Derek Owens just to throw in a wrench? Or all of these too redundant?
  2. Math: MIF Course C and AOPS Prealgebra over the summer before MIF Course C (can't tell which one is harder or easier) Science: Science Fusion and Derek Owens Physical Science and maybe Supercharged Science with their science experiment tutor ASL: hanging out with the deaf community, Koda camps, deaf mentors for their little brother who uses ASL, we were doing Chinese and Spanish but that has stopped since youngest brother needs ASL. History: UGH, I have no idea, We have not gone further in Story of the World since Time Capsule, but they really do cover a lot of history in their Attuneup classes. Need ideas for this one Writing: Attuneup, trying to see if Amy will work with my girls using Excellence in Literature next year. Like correcting their papers or something like that. Literature: Excellence in Literature Grammar: Analytical Grammar Typing/Handwriting: Continuing on with both. PE: Adventures in Fitness and gymnastics Music: Piano for one, guitar for the other, Garage Band Academy For fun over the summer prior to 8th-Homeschool MineCraft (which ones should they do?) I have found two different ones thus far.
  3. Thank you so much for your responses. My girls even though they are 13yrs look and act like 9 or 10yrs even though academically right on par. Tiny things and we live in the East Bay. They would be going to Chabot in Hayward. So CC is not looking very promising for them anytime time soon unless I drive them towards Fremont or San Ramon/Pleasanton/Livermore. Regardless it will be awhile before I feel comfortable letting them go to class there. Maybe I can audit classes with them but then I don;t know what I would do with the little ones. I wish I can put time on hold and let them grow a bit more before HS came along.
  4. When did you start letting kids stay home alone? What ages? What signs of maturity did you look for ? I have at home right now 5 kids. My ex is raising my older three and honestly would have never left two of those home alone for a long time based on their behaviors but that is why my ex is raising them. They wanted to live with him because he gave them WAY too much freedom. Hence once is a teen mom. Anyways, so right now i am so busy driving younger boys to their therapies and my older ones need school work time. I have noticed that their attention span is horrible. A lot of losing their focus and things taking nearly all day to finish. Highly annoying. I need to leave older ones home in order for them to get things done. When did you start doing that and how long would you be gone? My husband has put in a drop cam to kind of keep an eye on things and make sure they are safe. I call them regularly. But I still get nervous leaving 13,13 and 11yrs home alone for several hours.
  5. I have two girls entering hs school soon and I THINK I will be doing A-g courses with them but they are very introverted girls socially. In fact been diagnosed with severe social anxiety. Hence that is why we have been homeschooling. Anyways, this year has been the worse for them socially. I see their pain when they meet new people or have to talk to other adults/teens. They are fine with younger kids. I was hoping homeschooling would have helped them and it seemed to at first. But not this past year. Anyways we are part of a homeschooling group with about 60 kids but my kids are the oldest of the kids and they really dont want to check out another group that have older kids. So we will stick out with this group and hope that older kids join eventually. Anyways, I want them to do more outings with this group and perhaps join a homeschool based 4H but that requires more free time and I am finding as they get older that they need more and more time on school work. How do you all balance the expectation of hs work and social life? Plus activities of younger siblings as well.
  6. I have two girls entering 8th grade. What were some skills/curriculums/programs you wished or were glad that you covered before they got into high school. My girls have been homeschooling since 4th grade.
  7. Ask Amy with Attuneup and see if she will start a course using it. we are considering it for next year.
  8. I am listening. I have entering 8th grades who have been doing Attuneup writing courses for two years. I have been talking to Amy about leading a writing course for my girls using Excellence in Literature Intro but wanted to hear about other options too.
  9. Well I wanted to update our time with math in focus. So we went from 4a Singapore and dabbled in glencoe textbooks to help with state testing stuff to math in focus course 2. My 7th grader girls learned a lot. I really really Luke math in focus. Few words and reading and very visual. Pretty much taught from textbook and didn't use teachers guide hardly. So I sat on couch With the girls and read examples, solved guided practice together and found let's practice problems to practice if they didn't get concepts immediately. At first I handed book to them to work on their own and then they corrected themselves because I was busy dealing with boys needs, big mistake. They still needed handholding. Plus khan academy helps too. We didn't have workbook. I recommend workbook To have more practice problems.

  11. We used math in focus course 2 this year. Our of all the math Math in Focus is my favorite (more visuals, less words)however I noticed the topics are getting harder for me to jump in and help. Are there any math in focus online courses for middle grades? What is math in focus course 2 comparable to? Would my girls be prealgebra next year? Still considering derek owens prealgebra over summer to tie up loose ends before starting algebra.
  12. Derek surfs do you have a sample of your child's writing? If so email Amy and see what she thinks. She is extremely accommodating and can tell you if the class will match your child or not.
  13. I agree webinar are important. We missed the last one and we are bummed over here. We got caught up with cramming for stupid common core test and doing geometry problems. We got very little math done this year because of the needs of the little ones. Sigh!
  14. http://www.buttepublications.com/index.php/our-online-catalog Learning disabled, autism, hearing impaired, developmental delays. Things I have never seen before that I could use.
  15. Yes, I was using the dogs and cats thing to kind of help with the sorting issue. I noticed they had problems sorting. To them it is just a jumble of numbers/letters on a line.
  16. He would never be able to do special olympics. He is too fragile for that. She is just looking for other parents with special needs adults to go and watch movies, dinners, lunches. I am not sure if he knows how to play board games but if he is mentally 10yrs I think he could handle some board games. I do know he likes to watch Pokemon. Anyone knows of an adult who watches Pokemon everyday other than my 20yrs old son. I am trying to convince him to drive up there to go see him. He is hesitant. I even called my ex to see if he would go and take my son and they both can go hang out with them.
  17. My twins are liking it and says it is a lot of work but they have been in her classes for two years now. They like the discussions too. It would be great if the kids could get each others emails or skype info and stay in contact with each other somehow. It was fun last year the kids got to a picture of themselves and their interests. That was fun!
  18. Ok so they are in 7th and 5th grade using Math In Focus 5th grade and Course 2. My other 7th grader totally gets it and has moved forward. I think their issue is still trying to figure what the like terms are. Does that make sense? I like the different colors. I will use that idea. Ok I will back track a little bit and slow down to illustrate this point. I like the 2+2= example too.
  19. Yes I suggested her contacting a local homeschool group just not sure how they would feel a grown man hanging out with their children. How would most people feel about a young man hanging out in their local homeschool group? Would you get wierded? I am not sure she is per se homeschooling him but they go to the movie theaters a lot. I am not sure if she has given up or has reached his max in her mind or the schools mind. I don't know. She is 50 something yrs old widowed and alone and not many family members alive in her family. I would think she would be pretty lonely and overwhlemed.
  20. So two of my daughter were having problems putting the like terms together and placing one type on one side of the equal side and the other on the other side. We have used hands on equations but to no avail. So I came up with an idea and i really hope this doesn't mess with them as they were not able to see any other way. So I basically said any term that has a variable is a like a cat and the ones with just numbers is like a dog and you have to separate them. Cats on the left side of the equal side or fence. Dogs on the other side. And you have to unwrap the package ---basically do the opposite of what was done to make it equal to zero on one side and what you do on one side you have to do on the other side. To make zero, I did what that guy did in that movie Stand and Deliver. You dig a hole and it is -2, then you fill it up +2 and it is flat zone which is zero. I drew a picture to show this. Now the next part is hard for them ...they see something like 5x and they think they should subtract the 5 to get the x by itself. and I keep telling them that 5x really means multiply and what is the opposite of multiplying---divide.... Thoughts on this anyone?
  21. Just met someone who has a 27yrs old son who has autism or global developmental delays with a mental age of 10yrs old. She said things were great until he turned 21yrs old in terms of socializing and meeting other parents with special needs kids and the governmental agencies etc lost interest in him unless she decides to institutionalize them. Now they are isolated. They get dirty looks for his behaviors and him going into Toys R Us buying Pokemon toys even though he is gentle. Or going to the park, people look and stare at him and give him dirty looks. Kids are a bit unnerved by him because he is big but acts young. He had a stroke at 15yrs old and most agencies didn't want him around. Some kind of liability thing. His father died in a car accident few years back and he regressed some too. She really doesn;t know what to do anymore and they are more and more isolated everyday. Does anyone live in that area and knows any parents with adult special needs kids who are not institutionalized? If so PM me and perhaps you can network. My kids are too young and we live too far for me to visit regularly. She is trying to find something but most special needs adults are living in care institutions.
  22. Is currently finishing up FLL4 and honestly not sure what on earth she retained. She has attention and memory issues. Debating JAG since AG worked awesome for her sisters who do not have attention and memory issues but then thinking about CLE LA. Not sure what level yet..will need to diagnostic test her once I get my printer to work again. Thoughts anyone?
  23. Going to second or maybe third Analytical Grammar. My 13 yrs olds put the video in on Monday to watch the videos and then does the activity and corrects it themselves. Then they do the next activity Tuesday and correct, next activity Wednesday and correct, next activity Thurs and correct and Friday is test day and correct. Everything is in the book and very much do the next thing and open and go. Saves time and energy. Independently done by girls. I do absolutely NOTHING other than put it on their schedule. I am so excited to see that they will have a cool grammar reference book for the rest of their lives once they are done with their program. Not sure how JAG would work with younger kids. Going to try it out with my 11yrs old next year. I will post back. She works much slower and memory issues are hard for her.
  24. Well I am not sure if they are doing well in the class because it is just me handing them the textbook and telling them to do a lesson a day and they correct it with the teacher's correction. I am in no position to teach them right now because it is starting to be beyond me and also because I have the little ones to deal with. I feel bad about that but it is what it is and that is why I was thinking an online class would be perfect for them and having someone else correct their work and give them feedback. If you think that the Prealgebra Derek Owens is not necessary what about the Prealgebra AOPS program for the summer before 8th grade?
  25. Someone tell me the two main differences between Saxon math and CLE math.... The curriculum director of our charter school thinks Saxon would be the best for two of my kids now. I have Saxon here sitting in front of me Saxon 65 that is and nothing is making me scream ---yes this is it... Since so many people praise CLE math ...what is it that makes you scream it is working.
