I am using primer and beta with my kids for the first time. I have the teacher text for both but really haven't used them at all. The DVD is pretty thorough.
My dd (8) came out of PS a few months ago with terrible handwriting. I started her out with HWT 2 so she could work on it before starting cursive. She's about half way through the workbook and her handwriting has completely changed. She puts forth the effort is now really proud of the fact that she can write so neatly. :)
Also, I think the 2 lined paper that HWT uses helped a lot.

MCP practice readers
And various beginning readers likes BOB books, Dr. Suess, I can read series, Step into reading series, etc.
So far we're using ETC and BOB books and SL k readers. I just got OPGTR from the library.
I definitely can't claim to be experienced sine we're only 4 weeks into Core B and P4/5. This is our first year homeschooling and it's been a breeze with SL. We're on the 4 day schedule. So far we're happy with everything except LA and geography. I'm starting to build my own programs for those subjects. We love the readers/read alouds.
For my ds, 5yo, I am using Sonlight core P4/5 with Handwriting w/o Tears (we love it!) and Math-u-See Primer and I plan on adding Explode the Code soon.
