  1. if you search t-tapp the post should come up. It's a few weeks old.:)
  2. Does anyone know if these are basically the same? Socratic Logic 3.1e: Socratic Method Platonic Questions due out in Sept. says it's the first edition which makes me think it's not just a few revisions. Anyone know? Thanks! Sherry
  3. We are all watching it now and all loving it. My dh and I watched it (W&D) years ago so I got it again when I saw it at the library. I had an internal freak out when I remembered the scene from Mansfield Park and had to figure out if it was from W&D before continuing. That is a scene I don't want the kids to see! Yuck! :(
  4. ...and I never want to see that movie again, so thanks for placing the scene :)
  5. Aha! Thank you! I'm glad it isn't W&D- my dds were watching it when I came home today.
  6. Is this the movie where there are drawings of the father assulting a woman (a slave woman, I think?). If not, can anyone remember the movie that was in? I think the son had drawn pictures because he was so upset about it. Thanks!
  7. He had a good interview last week, so we're hoping...
  8. He'll be in 10th next year. I think I'll plan on D'Angelo and then move into Kane. I'm still debating a writing assessment progym course, but I don't want to overwhelm ds in my 'enthusiasm' ;) The courses seem to be intense 6 week sessions, and ds' schedule is pretty full. Thanks again, Sherry
  9. Mary, did you use D'Angelo along with CW? I was also looking at CW again (I bought and sold Homer...), but I think D'Angelo will work better for ds- he's taking writing classes at a homeschool academy also.
  10. Thanks, Kareni. I've searched the boards and it seems like there are more questions on using this resource(s) than answers. I guess life, and education, are messy~ :)
  11. What do you think SWB means by this? Is it the content or is it the quality of the writing used in the examples? Have any of you used D'Angelo as is? It seems like a pain to find other examples to use. I also have Corrbet- and I can't figure out how I would use the examples there with D'Angelo. I can't even line them up to find the examples.:001_huh: I'm trying to figure out if I want ds to use this or take a class with writingassessment.com. I have to return D'Angelo (ILL-only copy in the state...) today, so I'm looking at a purchase either way. Has anyone here used D'Angelo with success? How? I'm open to any and all input! Thanks!
  12. My kids do-mostly because they taste good:001_smile:. No water needed. I'd think it would be OK if your dr suggested a fiber supplement.
  13. Thinking about this more- Grover is obviously a satyr, so his character in the movie makes sense. But the suggestive material wasn't in the book, and they didn't need it in the movie.
  14. Yeah, the casino was not the same, but it was Grover's character at the casino that was...just NOT Grover. So unnecessary. And the scene in the underworld with Grover? (not saying the other character's name since it was so different from the book.) Percy and Annabeth...I know they get together in future books, but again, attraction based on her looks was the first thing introduced. Again, yuck.
  15. They took an innocent, fun story and filled it with suggestive material. I could not believe it. I'm actually quite peeved and disappointed.
  16. I keep coming back to The Core Program by Peggy Brill. Your library probably has a copy of the book. I usually end up hurting myself with more intense workouts (T-Tapp, Shred...). Core is yoga/pilates based, fairly easy to learn, and effective without pain- and it's written by a Physical Therapist. A strength training program with weights is also included.
  17. I edited to change the question. Does K9 limit utube enough or is it better to block the whole site? Thanks!
  18. Thanks everyone~ I'm off to B&N and Half Price Books to see what I can find.:)
  19. I'm looking for a book for my 14 yo. He's reading Three Men in a Boat right now, so I thought he might like Wodehouse. Are any of the stories OK for teens? I've seen Life with Jeeves recommended here, but it's not available at the local B&N. Can he jump in with any of the Jeeves books? I'm open to other suggestions too. Thanks, Sherry
  20. Our COBRA subsidy ends this month- Does this mean it will not be available in January? :crying: I'm concerned that dh won't qualify for the unemployment extension- does anyone know if it is limited to high unemployment states? I believe there was a limitation to the last extension... Dh is getting conflicting info from unemployment office (sigh...) Thanks for the info Terri!
  21. Does anyone know if there are restrictions to the bill that passed yesterday? Is it limited to "high unemployment states?" Does it have to pass the Senate now? Does that seem likely? Dh's unemployment ends in Jan. and I'm hoping he qualifies for this. Is the COBRA subsidy extended for all? I've been searching online, but not finding info in enough detail and/or plain English. Thanks!
  22. I'd look at the narration examples in SOTW as goals for fourth grade. You'll be working through WWE and it will guide you each step of the way. For her reading notebook in first grade, "Samantha had a closetful of clothes." seems fine. You could write down one of her answers to your specific questions too. In the Great Books seminar, SWB suggests helping the child form the complete sentence and helping her to put together ideas into a sentence- very positively and gently. She gives examples of how to do it. HTH, Sherry
  23. I recently listened to SWBs Great Books and Writing Without Fear CDs. I think they'd be helpful to you. My dc are in 9th, 7th, and 3rd. I've stressed so much over these issues over the years trying to follow TWTM. I've felt like I was missing something, not doing enough, etc. Susan's CDs really help to break it down. I've found I can go back to TWTM after listening without stress. SWBs Writing Without Fear is an older lecture with prior recommendations, but Susan gives examples of her work with her dc. Very comforting. Great Books is a current lecture- it's excellent for getting the long term view and starting to prepare for middle and high school level. Actually, I just checked, and in the GB lecture Susan goes through narration also, so it may be the best place to start. She spends quite a bit of time on the grammar stage. (I'm listening as I'm typing- the GB lecture is excellent! It covers grammar stage writing.) If you are interested in following WTM, following WWE will help you know where you should be through the elementary years. Your dd is doing great for first grade! She is at the very beginning and has a lot of time to develop skills she'll need in the logic stage. Remember, in 5th grade she needs to be able to summarize at a basic level and will begin learning to find the main point in a paragraph (beginning outlining). It doesn't have to take a lot of time in first grade, and it can be fun. I regret the stress I experienced and communicated to my oldest. Poor guinea pig :tongue_smilie:!
