  1. I'm still trying to figure it out. It looks like students choose one of six art areas (music, dance, etc), and also take English, math, science, social studies, and world languages. It's a public school for 11th and 12th grade.
  2. My ds is looking into an arts school for 11-12th grade. He will be going into 9th this fall at home and will be starting Lial's Algebra. He completed 1/3 of Chalkdust Alg and 4 chapters of LOF. (Death in the family and overwhelming outside class schedule... and we're switching to Lial's at his request.) I was just looking through the school's academic information and found... ****** Classroom Resources for Precalculus A Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry (University of Chicago School Mathematics Project). TI-83 graphing calculators. Statview-statistical software. Graph Explorer-graphing software. Videos: Project Mathematics: Sine and Cosine, Parts 1, 2, and 3. Classroom Resources for Geometry Discovering Geometry: An Inductive Approach by Michael Serra, Key Curriculum Press, copyright 1997. Four Function Calculators. Software: Geometer’s Sketchpad, Letterforms and Illusions, Tesselmania Videos, laserdisks, slides: The Shape of Things, Geometry in Nature (NCTM slides), Platonic Solids, Donald in Mathemagic Land, Project Mathematics: The Story of PI, Theorem of Pythagoras, Similarity. Classroom Resources for Precalculus B Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics (University of Chicago School Mathematics Project). TI-83 graphing calculators. Classroom Resources for Advanced Algebra Advanced Algebra Through Data Exploration: A Graphing Calculator Approach (Key Curriculum Press) TI-83 graphing calculators. Classroom Resources for AP Calculus AB Calculus Single Variable-second edition (McDougal Littel) TI-83 graphing calculators. MAA Calculus Films ******* I think he can work through Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 before going to this school. Are the Precal/Calc classes....OK? I believe I've heard horror stories about Chicago Math... What do you think? Scary? Should I be hyperventalating? Thanks, Sherry
  3. Well, it's good to know it's not a problem others have experienced. I think we'll back up a bit, do some LoF, and chill about the schedule. Maybe the DVD format is harder for him. (?) He did comment today about liking LoF because he can just read it and not watch. Hmmm.... Thanks everyone~:D
  4. In fact, he's always been super quick with math. That's why I'm wondering if there is a disconnect between the DVDs to the book. Do your kids read the book, or just watch the DVDs? I'm surprised this isn't working out to be independent work. We are going through a stressful time right now, so maybe it's nothing to do with the curriculum...
  5. I'm really wondering if struggling with the word problems is a common problem with CD. If it is, does Dr Mosely cover word problems more extensively later in the series- 'catching up' with the book? I've contacted Dr Mosely before and he was very helpful, I'm just looking for perspective from users, too.
  6. We're having trouble with CD word problems. Is that a common issue? I haven't been watching the DVDs, but it seems that strategies for the word problems are not covered? Ds is in chapter 3, and he wasn't able to do the word problems in the mid chapter quiz. He's always been very good at math, but he's feeling super frustrated with CD.:001_huh: I think there may be a disconnect between the DVDs and the book. Frustrating... I'm having him work through Life of Fred for a while, then we'll start back up with CD. Anyone have other thoughts/advice? Thanks, Sherry
  7. I agree with Chris- especially with validating his feelings of rage. Another resource I'd like to suggest is a *positive* self defense class. Specifically Kidpower if you are anywhere near one of their locations. I'm sure there are other classes available, but I'm not familiar with them, and I'm so happy with KP. KP does things so positively and helps people regain power they've lost, or never felt they had. Though they teach physical self defense, their classes are empowering in so many other ways. I'd be wary of a group that focuses only on the physical aspect. He may be frustrated with not knowing how he'd handle things if he were in a threatening situation again. A few KP sessions can help with that. For myself, I went through a time of panic asking 'what would I do if x, y, or z.' It can be empowering to role play trying out a few options. You can also talk with the KP center explaining your son's experience, and they will be able to more specifically help him in class. They may be able to recommend groups in your area if you are not close(?) http://www.kidpower.org/ And hugs to you mom.
  8. Thanks Soph- do you know if HO relieves PMS symptoms too?
  9. Soph, do you know when Her Option is recommended? Has it helped with PMS- cramping, bloating, general misery? Can I ask what Dr you went to for this (I'm in the Cities too)? My dh works for the company that makes this product, so I've been interested in it- but I don't know if my symptoms are bad enough. Thanks :)
  10. Are there 30? 36? I've been searching, but haven't found the info. Thanks:)
  11. I just found your answer searching for something else. Thanks :)
  12. I don't think they are so ugly, but they are too cushy for me and my back and legs end up hurting by the end of the day. Give me my ugly Chaco's anyday! :D And they do get sweaty. Yuck. I wear them for short outings and as inside shoes.
  13. It worked just fine this morning. Go figure~ Thanks for the ISBN idea. I'll try it next time I run into a problem.
  14. Now no languages will come up when searched. I have one book in my cart, but I can't find anything else. Is this just a computer blip for tonight, or is it possible they've completely run out of Galore Park books. Or am I doing something wrong?
  15. I have this already. I'm not sure why I didn't think of it. Thanks, Abbey.
  16. Our internet connection is slow for video. Great idea though ,thanks.
  17. I'm looking for recommendations for Spanish at an easier level than Spanish for Children (my original plan). My 2nd grader is easily frustrated and I'm realizing SfC would be...unwise at this time. :tongue_smilie: Any ideas for easy Spanish? My goal is for her to feel successful, even though her older siblings will be cruising along in their Spanish. Thanks!
  18. one quick note and I'm off to the pool. I just wanted to note that some folks don't have enzymes to process Chia seeds. My dd was taking some omega 3 pills made from them and she had severe issues. It can be in vitamins listed by the scientific name, so it's easily missed. We were baffled until she went camping for a week and didn't have any problems. We knew it'd had to be something at home and finally figured it out.
  19. I think I've stepped off the crazy bus :) I'm actually going to order Latin and Spanish and then do whatever feels right. Thanks for encouraging me to be at peace!
  20. My kids have 3-4 friends over all the time. Their mom works, and I'm the unpaid field trip director and taxi to the pool. Last summer I fed them. This summer I got cranky and I send them home and/or have super cheap snacks. I don't think it's rude to say it's snack time- come on back to play in 15 minutes. You might want to wait until school starts so it's not too much of a shock!
